Victim of gang rape arrested by Irish police having attempted suicide

Police found the woman in hospital after court case terrified her into overdosing

A woman who was gang raped in Ireland, while pregnant, was arrested and imprisoned during the trial for refusing to give evidence.

In a highly unusual practice, according to the Sunday Independent report, the Eastern European woman was made to stand in front of the accused and identify each one. The next day she left a note for her partner saying she was too scared to return to the court.

The Gardai (police) found her in hospital. She had taken sleeping pills and drank over a half bottle of vodka.

Her rape trial was abandoned and she was brought before the court the following day. She was held in a cell, in the same area as the three men she had accused, until she could be sworn in for her own trial.
Last week, the three men accused of her rape were acquitted after a two-week trial.

At the time of the alleged rape the woman had been three months pregnant. She claimed they poured vodka over her face and took turns raping her. She said they also urinated on her and locked her in a wardrobe.

On her first day in court she tried to explain that she had been trapped in the wardrobe before being taken downstairs and raped. Speaking to the Central Criminal Court there was some confusion over which of the men was involved.

Justice Paul Carney told her she would have to go to the dock and point them out. The visibly terrified woman was made stand in front of the accused according to Conor Gallagher’s report in the Sunday Independent.

At the end of the first day the barrister said he was sure the woman would collapse by the end of the case.

The very next day she left her partner a note which read “Don't be mad, I can't go today…I'm terrified. I love you. I will be with my friends.”

When the police arrived to her house at 8.30am and she was missing Justice Carney issued an arrest warrant. He also ordered that no discretion by used in executing it.

Carney said, “If she has to spend a long time in prison herself waiting for a re-trial that's her fault…The lady has chosen not to present herself today. I have issued a warrant for her arrest. There are three other cases awaiting trial. I don't have the mechanism to put you into cold storage so I will discharge you."

Carney has in effect raped her again. Ireland apparently has a long way to go in their treatment and opinion of women. This is absolutely shameful. I would have been terrified, too, and would still be. Those animals, fueled by a brutish judge, could easily come after her again, and this time kill her. And to Woodman who thinks she should 'toughen up a bit' - Shame on you too.

This lady has no moral obligation to other potential women victims to prevent it from happening again? She should toughen up a bit. Did the rapists walk because she would not testify against them? Hope they got it out of their system. You don't think they won't do this again?

It's not just an Irish Justice problem, you often see it in immigrant communities (Chinese in San Francisco, Mexicans in Chicago, Pakistanis in London, North Africans in Paris), where distrust of the local authorities combine with lack of societal control yield nasty crimes that are hard to prosecute. Whether victim or accused, it's scary to be "a stranger in a strange land."

I wonder will the St Vincent de Paul Society in Ireland pay any fines that may be levied as a result of this case. Readers may not be aware that the SVP in Ireland pay fines for foreign wrong-doers. Where do they get the money? From the dopey Irish of course! The good people of Ireland--ya gotta love 'em, they're so naive--give generous donations to help combat poverty and hunger, but the Vincent de Paul uses their money to pay the fines of foreign thieves, beggars and con men!

@IrelandNorth.If the law supposes that,then the law is "A" ass.Meaning ~ a idiot! Nothing to do with a donkey or Ass at all.It's OK though it's a common mistake by almost everyone.I made the same mistake when I first read Oliver Twist when I was seven ;))

@Murph46.I am Georgie Boys friend.I care enough to comment on his way of thinking.I don't think he should be tarring all Eastern Europeans for this crime by saying I'm not surprised.Implying all Eastern Europeans are prone to rape and crime.It's a proven fact that poverty and crime go hand in hand most of the time.Here is an example of how a decent family of moderate means can fall into the poverty trap and into crime.~A country calls on it's people to fight a war.A son goes off to do his duty for his country.He kills the enemy,sees horrific things and ends up shell shocked to the extent his mind will never be right again.He comes home and he's hailed a hero.He married but is mentally disturbed and can't control himself and ends up been extremely aggressive and abusive to his wife and kids.He has done his duty for his country but he can't to his wife and family.His kids are now mentally disturbed by his actions and don't have the capacity to cope properly within the boundaries set by society.They are in constant mental pain and the tendency in humans in pain is to seek instant relief and instant gratification and with aggression.This then leads to crime and poverty.So the cycle continues through the generations to a greater or lesser degree.Even if Eastern Europeans were prone to aggression.With the last 70 years they had.Is it any wonder?.To classify any nation or ethnic group as stupid or no good is wrong.Governments and some people can be wrong and act stupidly.But never a whole nation as Georgie Boy implies.

Reminds me of a quote attributed to Charles Dickens in a dispute with a presiding judge of an English court room in the 1800's: "Well, Sir! If that is the law, then the law is an ass." Ass, as in donkey (for our American posters). Middle-class laws do not protect working-class people, and are consequently legislatively dissonant. Sexual abuse of foreign national women IS a problem in Dublin and Ireland.

Sources in the Garda Síochána stressed this weekend that the case was still "listed" in the Dublin courts and the judge involved could order a retrial. That, however, hinges on whether the woman is prepared to testify again.How can justice be done if she doesn't testify?The trial heard that the alleged attacks took place from 15-19 November 2010.Over 5 days?? Whats that about?The first of the accused, a 28-year-old man, lived in the same house as the woman and her partner. He was alleged to have falsely imprisoned the woman, raped her and assaulted her and her partner, causing them harm.They were Eastern Europeans.

Word from Ireland is that the accused in this case are also Eastern Europeans. Not surprising. One in three people incarcerated in Irish jails is a foreigner. Ah, the Joy of Mass Immigration!
