The Catholic priest at the center of a gay porn controversy has taken temporary leave from his duties as the parish priest of Pomeroy in County Tyrone.

According to the Irish Times, Father Martin McVeigh asked the Primate of All-Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady for a temporary leave after a meeting between local parents and the representatives of the archdiocese on Friday night proved 'inconclusive.'

The archdiocese, in an attempt to address the controversy, has reportedly been conducting an inquiry into how 16 pornographic images were 'inadvertently' shown by the priest to a group of about thirty parents and one child during a powerpoint presentation on children's first Confessions on March 26.

In response to the outcry Father McVeigh claimed he had no idea where the pictures had originated and that the memory stick that contained them had been used by several people.

'The priest has stated that he had no knowledge of the offending imagery. The archdiocese immediately sought the advice of the PSNI who indicated that, on the basis of the evidence available, no crime had been committed,' Cardinal Brady  told the press. The Cardinal added that there was no suggestion that the images were of minors and no suggestion they were illegal.

In a curious twist, the computer laptop in question was stolen from Father McVeigh’s house shortly after the offending event. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have appealed to the public for information to help establish the timeline and the circumstances behind the theft.

Meanwhile the Catholic Communications Office said a further meeting will take place on the matter between the parents and representatives of the archdiocese.  Some parents have spoken to the press about their anger that Father McVeigh will keep his job.

'Parents and parishioners are disgruntled and angry,' one local source reportedly told The Sun. 'He gave no explanation or apology to the group and bolted.'

After he was informed of the images, Father McVeigh stopped the presentation and offered no explanation or apology, instead he simply left the room some angered parents said.

Do not destroy your lungs by holding your breath, JESUS promised to be EMMANUEL GOD WITH US until the end, so Nostradaumus can step aside. Momma Church has survived a lot worse from inside scandals to outside pressures since Paul fussed at immorality in the Corinthian Church. FACTS; Other people had access to the computer equipment; the cardinal and officials acted immediately, inconclusive means there is no proof he did it. Fr McVeigh walking out is not proof he was guilty, shock, embarrassment, can cause such reactions- he did come back. Some of you who make judgments on these Irish and Catholic stories should help the Pope out- his staff has a lot of studying and consulting to do to decide guilt and innocence in his CDF and other departments - AND would love you people without facts to make INFALLIBLE decisions for him at the FACT level. He cannot afford Euro 200 K a year consultants as Taoiseach Kenny and cronies can- paid for with the sacrifices of single mothers and pensioners and rising petrol costs. WISE Up Gentle Folks to the REAL EVIL, get a sense of proportion about how many and whom and how miuch is wrong with the CHURCH whose St Vincent De Paul and other charities are subsidising the 200 K "consultants."
The most appropriate way to be caught in Ulster/Northern Ireland is 'red handed', since that's the emblem of the province. Though no defender of clerical child sexuual abuse or homosexuality, I'm personally picking-up on a plant. Priest-baiting is a fashionable blood sport.
Its funny that you never seem to get the posters who traditionally support the hierarchy to make their views known on stories such as this. I for one would be anxious to have their analysis on the position of Cardinal Brady on this. Defending the indefensible by totally exonerating Father McVeigh despite the facts.Stolen Laptops; destroyed memory sticks; an intention to limit the scope of the "internal" church inquiry into this incident. Does any of this sound familiar????? It would seem to me that Cardinal Brady as a self-appointed "wounded healer" (his words) really should stop shooting himself in the foot and man up to what is going on. If he does not, in effect he is only continuing to preside over the slow dis-integration of the fabric of catholic life both in his own Arch-diocese of Armagh and well beyond the boundary of that place also!!
the real 2nd question is what happened to his "stolen" laptop. So convenient and they didnt take anything else. Sure points a finger at the heirarchy who did much more horrible deeds re the child molestation issues.................Including something i didnt realize till a few days ago - they were not only moving bad priests to new locations but also countries. ed some from the USA to Ireland and also the reverse. BTW someone who is actively catholic told me that Nostradamus predicted the end of the catholic church in this time. IMHO the sooner the better. They can rename the vatican to Frankensteins Castle.
You don't mean to say he's going to try and find a way out of it? If I understood the article correctly, he was "granted leave", which comes across as he requested it himself. They must think we haven't learnt anything since the Ryan and Murphy Reports.
Caught 'red handed', what the hell's the matter with these guys, when their caught, they leave for someplace else?
BrianinKent, no the doors will be closed and the sign will say "Closed due to Lack of Interest".
At this rate, there wont be a Priest left in Ireland within 5 years!! Churches will be closed with notices on the door stating "Closed, due to staff shortages!!
He will be sowing his movies at a local hotel!
The problem here is that there were children involved. This was a preparation by parents to prepare their children for First Holy Communion. I would say that from the reaction of the priest that he was "caught with his pants down".
Don't you just love the word, "Inconclusive!" What an insipid word! I was wondering who arrived at this Church-led, investigative conclusion. Could it have been the renown Cardinal Brady? Whether or not the images "were illegal," they were IMMORAL! This "Inconclusive Conclusion" only diminishes Cardinal Brady's credibility and reputation even more. How long will he remain the chief Prelate or Primate of Ireland? He's not doing the Church in Ireland any favors by hanging around!
