Two Northern Irishmen have been fined for posting sectarian message on Facebook threatening to kill “taigs” (Catholics), along with other religious abuse.

Matthew McKenna (20) and Dean Boyd (21) were fined $715 (£400) and $396 (£250) respectively. Surprisingly Boyd’s wife and child are both Catholic.

The two men posted these comments during the height of the loyal order marching season in County Antrim, last year.

Sinn Fein Northern Ireland Assembly member Daithi McKay reported these comments to the police. He was named by McKenna in one of the texts and feared for his family’s safety.

Judge Richard Wilson, at the Coleraine Magistrates’ Court said they were stupid and rabble-rousing remarks.

He said “I hope you realize how inappropriate and stupid your comments are.

“It is comments like this that excite and exacerbate any tensions within this community and we can well do without it."

The Belfast Telegraph
reports that this is one of the first cases of prosecution for social networking in Northern Ireland.

Both men pleaded guilty to sending a message.

Boyd had posted the message on his 21st Birthday, 25th August. He is an unemployed father-of-one from Skye Park, Ballymena.

He posted a comment saying “kill all taigs" and "f**k the Pope", the court was told.

Boyd expressed remorse in court. His lawyer said he had quickly removed the offending post.
They added that it was his birthday and he had been drinking.

The lawyer said there were a number of other “more serious” messages being passed around by other people.

"Mr Boyd did post the comments that have been read out but within 20 minutes he realized he should not have done such a thing and took the comments down.

"He was extremely frank and remorseful to police, in contrast with the responses of the other individuals."

The defense said “He runs in mixed circles and his friends heard of this and he suffered quite a deal of appropriate opprobrium for what he has done."

McKenna, a factory worker from Lisnahilt Road, Broughshane, County Antrim, also appeared in court.

The prosecution said he made a comment which named McKay.

He also posted “Let's show the scum in Rasharkin [a Co Antrim village where many Catholics live] how it is done.

"God save the Queen. For God and Ulster, Kill all taigs. Lest we forget."

His defense said McKenna did not realize his comments were public.

Judge Wilson said “These stupid, rabble-rousing sentiments are better left unsaid and your mouth zipped.

"When you place them on the media like this it only excites and stirs up feelings in the community, which we could all do without."

McKay said “No-one would get away with making such comments in the street and it is important that a message is sent out that sectarian comments and threats such as this are not acceptable and in this instance can inflame tensions.

@sirpeter the most important point i wish to make is who gave you the right to stand in judgement of others? Its very righteous of you to act as Judge and Jury. All religions have been guilty of wrong doing over time and throughout history especially the Roman Catholic faith. Lets face it the RC Church are now attempting to silence their own Priests who wish to discuss the sex abuses committed by the employees of the RC Church? Gagging them in effect. How noble and righteous is that?
@sirpeter QUOTE "saying something derogatory towards protestants in a historic sense doesn't mean a person is anti-protestant. As far as I am concerned their is a big difference." UNQUOTE. This statement is the most stupid that can be made by anyone whom says hes not anti-protestant. 1. Your statement simply shows that you use a one size brush to paint everyone whom is a protestant. Its called stereo-typing. Within the protestant churches many people exist. There are many churches within the protestant family of Churches. So its silly to stereo-type. 2. You cannot place the blame for what happened generations ago on the people whom are living today. Do we apportion blame on the Germans living today for the holocaust of 11 million people during World War 2? Should the Jews race point the finger at every German alive today and make derogatory comments at them obviously in a historic sense? 3. How is it possible to make derogatory comments towards anyone in a historic sense in any event? It is impossible. 4. If is acceptable @sirpeter i am blaming you for Guy Fawkes attempting to blow up the houses of parliament. He was called Guy O'Fawkes and a Catholic of Irish descent. The Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh is also your fault as he was a Irish Amercian. Do you not see how stupid your analysis is? Its childish in the extreme. Grow up and switch on your brain. Stop the bigotary behaviour its sick.
@sirpeter. QUOTE. "I have upset myself though if I felt my comment was poor when replying to an intelligent comment. I'm very unlikely to be upset by you. It might happen if you take your head out of your ass" UNQUOTE. Thats not very pleasant and very vulgar at the end. First you behave all sincere and then become abusive. It doesnt prove anything by getting nasty and rude. You bring up the word bast*rd. I am not being rude here or vulgar but most children born today are born to parents which are not married. So it is true to say that yes the next generation are mostly bast*rds. The point I made earlier is simple IC is so tilted in the reporting of stories that it always brings religion into every story. Eg. Titanic story. Leads to anti-Catholic sentiment based on what. A claim that sometime was written on titanic which when examined in a mirror reads "No Pope". This type of story is rubbish. It would not be allowed to put into printed form as it would be challenged without foundation or evidence. Wheres the proof of its truth? What someone is alleged to have said. Is that the evidence? Was a photograph taken of this slogan? No. Its probably all made up to fill the IC website pages.
As Harry Enfield's scousers would say "Calm down, calm down!"
there goes the neighbourhood
allan07.Let me explain simply. If you say to me that the Spanish inquisition was wrong and those Catholics were a bunch of bast*rds.I don't see that statement as Anti-Catholic.I see it as historical fact.I can't morally argue with that because I think it's a correct statement. We have enough historical facts at this stage to prove it so.If I say historically the Stormont government treated Catholics badly and those Protestants were a bunch of bast*rds. Why do you consider that anti-protestant,when we have enough historical facts at this stage to prove it so?.BTW. Nobody has ever upset me on this site.I have upset myself though if I felt my comment was poor when replying to an intelligent comment.I'm very unlikely to be upset by you.It might happen if you take your head out of your ass.
@citizen69.I don't think IC articles are Anti-Catholic as such. But IC are consistently attacking the Catholic church hierarchy. The people are the church, but the Catholic church hierarchy is separate though part of the church too. There is no doubt the Catholic church has handled the abuse cases very badly. But only by covering it up.The reality is all Churches have a problem with pedophilia.2% of the general population are pedophiles and another much higher percentage are homosexual. It's only logical that a lot of these emotionally confused young men have been drawn to the Church.Allan07 makes a good point in saying that IC excludes the Protestant community and their traditions. As they say. There is only one thing worse than been talked about and that's not been talked about.
@sirpeter QUOTE "saying something derogatory towards protestants in an historic sense doesn't mean a person is anti-protestant. As far as I am concerned theres a big difference". UNQUOTE. Why do NOT see a difference? Because your full of hatred and your a bigot! Perhaps. Twisted logic and confused minds. If you make derogatory remarks towards others then dont be upset if you receive the same in return. Who are you to think your different and immune from derogatory remarks or insults?
Why is the IrishCentral news so bigotted? Example. Loads of stories all the time with headlines that include the word "Catholic". Lets look at these and have a list. Here goes.1.Did Anti-Catholic sentiment of Titantic sank the unsinkable ship" 2.Senior ranked Catholic Caridnal George Pell say jews intellectually and morally inferior" 3. Nine of ten Irish Catholics believe priests should be allowed to be married". Oh then theres this story that uses the words "Two Northern Irish men fined for posting anti-Catholic comments on Facebook". The theme here is propaganda written by nationalist for nationalist. How many employees does IrishCentral employ that are Protestant from Northern Ireland or even the Republic of Ireland. I bet you its zip, none or zero. Discrimination againsy the protestant community. I keep asking IrishCentral the same question but no answer. Lots of comments I make never get out on here as its edited by republicans. The site is just a method to promote their republician agenda. They never lets the facts get in the way of a good story.( Even its made up or altered to suit). 100% Propaganda.
@sirpeter: You may be correct in general but i have read some pretty nasty bigoted posts on here in the past that were very much in a present sense (admittedly, probably from idiots who know little about Ireland) . Besides, although this kind of thing is disgusting from whatever quarter, IrishCentral only seem to publish the anti-catholic stories. Just a a couple of months ago a catholic man was in court in Co. Derry for commenting on Facebook that a protestant politician should be shot through the head. I don't recall seeing the story printed here though. Irish Central are very selective about the the stories the will post from Northern Ireland. I rarely see any that show unionists / protestants in a positive light. They never commemorate or mark any atrocities or celebrations relating to the protestant culture. Nail O'Dowd will claim we are all Irish and that Republicans need to persuade unionists that a united Ireland is in everyone's best interest but yet this website still very much seems to see Unionism & Irishness as mutually exclusive.
Waiting for the Day the FCC starts Demanding the Extradition of Irishmen for Speaking their Pint of Guinness. Rave On ! Luther, Rave On !
I have never seen any comments or anybody on IC threatening or saying to kill protestants along with religious abuse.Saying something derogatory towards protestants in a historic sense doesn't actually mean a person is anti-protestant.As far as I'm concerned there is a big difference
Hmm, there's quite a lot of anti-protestant rants in the comments of IrishCentral.com. I wonder when they will be getting fined?
Plus ca change...
