Conor Dooney, now 21 and a third year student on an athletics scholarship at Yale, is alleged to have sat the Leaving Certificate Physics exam for his friend Stephen Boucher in 2008.

Ireland’s Department of Education referred the case to Irish police who recommended that Dooney and Boucher be charged with forgery.

Their case opened at Dun Laoghaire Court last week and the pair have been remanded on bail before the case resumes at a criminal court.

Police allege that middle distance runner Dooney had already been offered an athletics scholarship at Yale when he sat his Leaving Certificate examination in the summer of 2008.

His results were academic and it is alleged that he sat the physics paper for his close friend Boucher at the Christian Brothers School in the South Dublin suburb of Monkstown.

The Department of Education believe that the pair swapped identities for the Physics exam only in an effort to boost Boucher’s results.

The case will now go forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and both men have been released on bail pending the full hearing.
