Megan McAllister, the “sweet Irish girl” engaged to accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff, is on a mission to clear her fiancee’s name in the press.

McAllister, described by Susan Fagan Madalenna, mother of one of her bridesmaid’s, as “a very smart kid, going to medical school, just bright and wonderful,” has sent emails to major media sources defending Markoff.

She wrote to "Good Morning America" that Markoff is a “beautiful person” who “could not hurt a fly.”

And she sent an email to People saying: “Philip has not been convicted. A policeman who wished to make money off this story sold it to countless companies. Philip is a beautiful man inside and out and did not commit this crime. Unfortunately, somebody else did and needs to be penalized. Philip was set up and you are wrong to be asking me for stories.”

Madellena, whose daughter is McAllister’s childhood best friend, told IrishCentral that friends and family were “fully behind Megan in her time of need” and that they found the whole story “horrific.”

"We could not believe it when we heard it," she said. “A reporter told me…and I was so shocked.” She said the reporters identified her from the couple’s Web site wedding page.

Madallena described McAllister as “a neighbor’s kid, from a great family. I’m just so glad she’s safe.”

Madallena said that TV trucks were parked outside her house in New Jersey, and that she has been invited to appear on several major TV shows.

“I can’t believe all this has happened," she said.

Neither she nor her daughter ever met Markoff, she stated.

Markoff was arrested on Monday as he drove with McAllister to Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. He has been described as both "a clean-cut Boston University medical student preparing to wed a blond beauty” (Boston Herald) and a disturbed young man "who’s not right in the head" (former lab partner Tiffany Montgomery to the Boston Globe).

It has to be very hard to believe and accept that your loving fiancee was a killer. It's true you never know anyone. Everyone has it in them to kill. I honestly believe that. What takes a person to that point varies. Some never go to that extreme. He was truely a sick man. He had a image to keep up and if anyone found out what he was doing it would be all over. What an easy way to avoid it all, just kill yourself. He was a weak man.
