"They also threw furniture from second floor porches onto cars and the street, and beer bottles at a large number of officers who had responded (to) quell the group."

Those arrested were variously charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree riot, resisting arrest and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon,  second-degree assault of a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree riot, resisting arrest, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The parties started at 7 a.m.  on Saturday; it was called kegs and eggs.

"It was (expletive) crazy stuff going on," said Putnick.

Throwing a television from a balcony, overturning a car, hurling bottles, abuse, inciting a riot...sounds like our Albany schollars have been on a cultural exchange 'student' visa on how St.Patricks is celebrated in Belfast. We were there two years ago. The tour bus hit with bricks--some slipping on vomit to find another one. Glad we made it back to Sligo. "There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow. And evening full of the linnet's wings" Yeats' County. In full agreement with Clancey's post this 'Patrick's' time of year.
Some people just simply should not drink
Now now Maloney, no need to generalize about liberals just becuase these misfits happen to be pursuing a college degree. If amongst that crowd were uneducated high school drop outs, that would not necessarily make them right-wing conservatives, though the odds would say...
St.Patrick's day, as 'celebrated' perpetuates unfortunate stereotypes and encourages bad behavior.
I am so glad to see that people are not blaming poor old St. Patrick for this, the parents of these louts have a lot to answer for. The younger generation, not just in America, have to much money nowadays, and who mainly gives it to them ???
When I was a little girl in Ireland, we didn't do anything like this, we went to church instead. But now I live in Albany. I must say, it IS fun, and most people know how to have a good time responsibly, but that particular part of town where the students live is out of hand. Oh, and Bloomberg is not the mayor of Albany, nor the Governor of New York State. He's the mayor of New York City (totally different place, lol).
I really do not see how this is really surprising. Parents spend loads of money to send their sons/daughters (many who are very immature and irresponsible) to live in close cramped quarters where the only thing many learn how to do well is drink very heavily, play with various electronic gadgets, sleep around, and try to obtain passing grades using any method possible with studying being the least favored option. Then after four years many graduate having obtained very little practical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in life. For many, it is basically a four year vacation from life. It is actually amazing this stuff does not happen more often.
This is not surprising. A lot of college students today are there to party and carry on. Usually the first two years away from Dad & Mom this is how it goes. After that, they listen to their liberal professors !!
Irish Central, "Your daily choice for revisionary news!" "St. Patrick’s riot as drunken students run wild on streets", should read, "Thousands enjoy Albany St. Patrick's parade despite unrelated and typical example of behavior of off campus students and effective police work that could occur on any Saturday night in any college town." I guess that wouldn't capture our attention as easily, though.
DRINKING ALCOHOL effects the brain. It stops it working properly.
Screw Bloomberg.
Immature rowdies, with or without Irish ancestry, will use any event as an excuse to get drunk and brawl. It's sad and disgusting when these jerks ruin events for everyone by their revolting behavior. Unfortunately, it'll go on as long as it's tolerated.
Who's going to call Mayor Bloomberg to apologise?
They must be mad as all harry because the revered Saint cast out the evil snakes from the blessed land. They must be some of the leftovers that survived. It's a pity that St. Pat. didn't trek about the rest of the planet to cast them all out to some dead planet on the other side of the Universe where they wouldn't be able to bother anyone but themselves. And what a lovely peaceful planet we would have then. The parade in my little town was a sheer delight. Folks got themselves out early to put their chairs on the front curbs of our green and proceeded to socialize with their neighbors and play with the children, picking up their corn beef sandwhiches from our two lovely lunch venues on the green. We had some honored dignitaries, ie a US Congresswoman and a newly elected US Senator, plus our own mayor, police chief, et al. In the evening, an aray of folks, all colors, shapes, sizes and ages gathered themselves in an array of about nine restaurants, all located within a half mile circle, spilling out of doorways, there were so many of them. The only inebriation that was observed by me was the exhuberant inebriation of music, laughter and fun--all in perfect Irish cameraderie.
If something were actually done to make them ALL truly sorry for their stupidity, then perhaps activities such as this would stop!! Look at all the sporting events where these bottom feeding losers turn on innocent bystanders, cars, ANYTHING, just for the thrill of destroying.....they haven't the brains nor talent to create, evidently, so they can only destroy. Stupid, *bleeping,* accidents of birth. Perhaps if a few more were just shot.....
