In a shock move, hundreds of firefighters including firemen from New York and Ireland have been barred from the Savannah, Georgia parade because of repeated drinking violations.

Savannah host the largest parade in the south and claims to be the second largest in the nation after New York.

The group which marches under the banner “Our Nation’s Firefighters” and has units from all over received a letter from the Saint Patrick’s Parade Committee banning them from the parade because of repeated violations of the no alcohol policy. The committee held a press conference on Monday night to explain their decision.

“I was shocked,” firefighters chairman James Grismer told the local media, WTOC 11. “If I had gotten the letter months ago I might have easily handled it but it is certainly the eleventh hour.

“And there are literally hundreds of very angry people out there and I'm thinking about the hotels here in Savannah,” said Grismer. “There's going to be a lot of cancellations.”

New York firefighters may be issued a separate last minute invitation according to one report, given their popularity after 9/11

“It's like being disgraced or dissed but there's little I can do,” said Grismer. “They tell me there's no appeal. But I would like the parade committee to at least understand the depth of our hurt.”

Grismer denies the firemen were drinking during the parade but the parade committee begs to differ.

"The firefighters were noted to be drinking before the parade, which must certainly shock people that somebody may be drinking before the parade," said Grismer. "The second thing was that the men were drinking in the line of march. That is untrue. This is closely monitored because of an incident in 2007."

New York firefighters were removed from the parade under similar circumstances that year.

However parade organizers beg to differ, “We went in depth with this and had major discussion on this more so than any other unit that's in the parade concerning the issues we've had in the past,” said parade chairman Brendan Sheehan.

“It's not that we want to limit anybody having fun,” said Sheehan. But if you want to have fun and drink alcohol do it outside of the parade route. Do it where there's no possibility that you're going to harm somebody ‘cause you're driving a vehicle and you're marching in the line and that you're going to hurt somebody in the parade.”

Handled wrongly, the correct way was to issue a firm warning, give the Firemen or Police a 12 months good conduct only warning then acted. If they ban 9-11 Firemen then it's Goodbye to the Parade, it will 'die a death'. I agree no drinking during the parade but it could be a warm day and Georgia can be a dry intellectual desert at times.
Something very strange here; Professional Fire Fighters are not like this. Are these people Voluntaries?
surely letters posted to station comanders asking a little common sense restraint would have been the way, most service people are read the riot ask before being let loose in different communities, most comply there is always a percentage who dont, those you arrest and charge, thats what shore patrols and police are for.
I was going to jump into this topic, as I live not too far from Savannah GA and have often attended and indeed walked in the parade. But then I saw that posters such as Tybee Irish, Maggypoo and DaveCoburn had dealt most efficiently with some of the ignoramuses who posted earlier. I have little to add, except to say that the Savannah Parade is not perfect, but improvements will not be brought about by importing drunks from NYC or wherever.
Pcksean: I was stationed at Camp Lejune, NC, for almost 2 years in the early '60s, when segregation was still in effect, but I never saw anyone being anti-Irish or anti-Catholic. In fact I got along very well with Southern WASPS who were my fellow marines, much beeter that I did with Irish Catholics from the Northeast, many of whom perceived me as being substantially inferior to them because I came from Ireland.
I always wanted to go. This is not a good piece
The Irish in the South are still dealing with the effects of anti-Catholicism.The Catholics of Savannah have been dealing with it longer that others. A bunch of foul mouthed drunks does nothing to enhance the perception of the Irish.
Savannah is a noted Party Town in the USA....if these firefigters cannot be tolerated by a well known Party Town, then they must be very bad..I bet the friefighters have received numerous warnings over the years.... Generally, firefighters in the USA are held in very high regard, indeed.
I am a third generation Irishman and Parade Committee member. I am also on the Adjutants Staff. Our duties are numerous. We are responsible for making sure the units are lined up in the right order so they step off in the right place. We make sure no one enters the parade without a permit. We also police the units for alcohol consumption along the parade route. We have had problems with other units before, but unfortunately not as many as the FDNY. Me coming from a long line of law enforcement, I would not dare disgrace my uniform in this manner, also to come as a guest into another Fire Department's jurisdiction and act this way is disrespecting them as well. I have great respect for ALL of our men and women in uniform. It's just a shame they don't feel the same.
come out from under the kitchen table fire puppy; I'll bet you couldn't take the smoke of an irish wake. ye and eejit; do you go around the house using those words? your another professional irish wannabe, that never set foot on the old sod. don't puke on your uniform next week!
89west--You must be quite a colossal Eejit. Are your brains heading south without ye? These hard times are hard for the unemployed, not a uniformed Firefighter. Maybe you should stop down your local firehouse and tell the lads what you think of them. I'm sure they'd love to hear it. Did any fireman tell you they were living hand to mouth? Where do YOU live? I'm betting an eejit like yourself is probably alone with your laptop and your right hand the closest you will ever be to a woman. Your mother probably can't stand you.
If you listen to public sector workers here and in Ireland, they will tell you they are living hand to mouth. How is it then, that firemen from New York or Dublin can take time off from work and fly to Savannah, rent a hotel room, imbibe before, during and after the parade and then do all the things that go on after the parade. They sound to me like a bunch of prima donnas who need to grow up and move out of their mother's basement apartment.
In these hard times, where does a fireman from NY or Dublin get the money and time off to fly to Savannah, rent a hotel room, imbibe before, during and after the parade and then do whatever else goes on after the parade. I'll bet they all must live home with mommy!
It's amazing how many stupid comments are posted here. @alisaann - the have been warned for years. You can halt the drinking for a couple of hours, rather then seeing drunken firemen,in uniform, staggering on the parade route begging for refills. @Fitzyboy the south has plenty of Catholics and an absolutely stunning Catholic Church in the historic district, a highlight of tours by visitors. Maybe you should educate yourself before spewing your ignorance. @seanomelb if "organisation" is anything like organization then behavior like this should not be tolerated by any "organisation" regardless of their location. It's sad you probably don't even know where the MD line as it's clear you have no idea of the fireman's behavior that caused this "organisation" to ban them.
that just wrong....i don't see what the BIG deal is with them drinking...as long as they are NOT causing a problem...then allow them to be part of it. alisa
