A week after breaking up with his fiancee Caroline Wozniacki amid huge media headlines, Rory McIlroy defied the skeptics and won the BMW PGA championship, the biggest European tour tournament, held at Wentworth in England.

It was his first European Tour victory since November 2012 and his final round of 66 left him at 14 under par, one stroke ahead of his close friend Shane Lowry.

A chip in for birdie at the tenth began the McIlroy charge. He made tough up and downs on the last three holes and finished the back nine in an astonishing 32.

Thomas Bjorn had a five stroke lead heading into round four but collapsed in spectacular fashion.

Earlier last week McIlroy had signaled the end of his engagement. Saying “the problem is mine” Rory McIlroy announced his engagement to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki was over.

“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” Mr McIlroy (25) stated. “The problem is mine,” he said.

He said there was “no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people”.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting,” his statement concluded.
