Two members of the Kennedy clan were arrested outside the White House on Wednesday for their involvement in a high profile protest over global warming.

Robert F Kennedy and son Conor, alongside actress Daryl Hannah, were handcuffed by police after they attached themselves with zip-ties to the gates of the Presidential home.

Conor, 17, made the headlines last summer after he dated Taylor Swift for a brief period.

A number of high profile figures were among the group who were protesting against the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline as they urged President Obama to reject the proposed project.

If approved the new project will stretch close to the 2,000 miles from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast of Texas and will carry tar sands oil, a highly toxic fuel.

As the 48 protesters were led away by police, spectators began chanting Robert and Conor’s names.

Robert Kennedy is president of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a New York-based environmental organization. Throughout his career he has gained a reputation as a defender of environmental issues.

A press release from the Sierra Club,  one of the most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the US, which also participated in the rally, stated, “After being taken away from the White House in handcuffs, both Kennedys were driven to a Park Police station and released after paying a fine.”

“For the first time in the Sierra Club’s 120-year history, we have joined the ranks of visionaries of the past and present to engage in civil disobedience, knowing that the issue at hand is so critical, it compels the strongest defensible action,”  Michael Brune, executive director of the environmental group, told RadarOnline.

“We cannot afford to allow the production, transport, export and burning of the dirtiest oil on Earth via the Keystone XL pipeline. President Obama must deny the pipeline and take decisive steps to address climate disruption, the most significant issue of our time.”

The same people who deny climate change also believe that scientist are wrong when they say life existed on earth millions of years ago. I think I'll take the dnosaur for a walk.
wrong,wrong,wrong,90%where did you get that figure, its lying green propoganda, there are just as many scientists that totally refute the myth of global warming.but there are large and powerfull vested intrests in whose intrest it is to tell these lies, anyone who disagrees is demonised, but all the makers of useless windmills, all the landowners who get vast taxpayer subsidies fron rent, all the sellers of junk bond carbon trading credits would have you believe the lies that the polar ice caps are melting, that fuji and kilimajaro are losing their ice caps,(lies)the hockey stick graph(al gore)totally disproved, all the pictures of extreme weather, its not unusual, its all happened before except there wernt tv cameras or radio to report it,its all so they can tax you and control you, there is no oil shortage, they havent discovered half of it yet.they just let enough loose to keep you paying top dollar.
99% of sceintists could be wrong.
Global Warning could be a rumour and even if true the money spent trying to fight it could be the same as trying to drain Lake Michigan with a bucket.. I would do nothing for 10 years, and the Russians and Chinese agree with me on this one.
Wonder if he was on Uncle Teddy's protest lines when he got wind farms killed on the Cape. NIMBY and arrogant Kennedys lecturing us. What's new. Daryl Hanna's career been bubbling along lately too. Kill Bill? Must need some free publicity perhaps?
Morons!
Not while I'm around, seanomelb. I would have liked to have been there, too. It didn't work out, precisely due to the fact that our freedom to peacefully protest, which is an American right under the Constitution, has been subverted by the corporate structure. The Kennedy's and Daryl Hanna are patriots, who are willing to risk it. For them they have the means to defend themselves lawfully, or to pay a fine. A patriot is still a patriot, rich or poor. The pipeline would be a disaster for the environment. We need to clean up the environment, not allow an even dirtier way of getting oil from tarsands.
Our diminishing right to protest seems to fall on deaf ears.
wtf Another two Kennedys arrested and released after paying a few bucks, what a surprise. Did you notice the ashes on the forehead? Another Kennedy tradition without any real commitment to the beliefs and laws of our faith.
Right--"A defender of environmental issues" except when it comes to anything that might spoil the Kennedy's view when sailing or anything else that might inconvenience them.
all that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to withhold their laughter...
