Congressman Peter King had warned just a few days ago, that an al Qaeda bomb attempt was imminent.
He said he suspected a plot was underway and that it "underscores the growing threat from radicalization within the Muslim-American community and 'lone wolf' terrorism, which I have repeatedly argued pose one of the gravest threats to U.S. national security."
King has been criticized in many quarters for holding hearings on alleged radical elements in the Muslim American community.
King, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, has confirmed that the bomb device which was intercepted in Yemen yesterday was meant for a US bound airplane.
The Long Island Irish American told Anderson Cooper on CNN that the recovery of the bomb is just part of the ongoing investigation and that many details are still unknown.
"It's not over as far as the operation itself, which is why you're seeing very few details being given out," he said. King also revealed that the suicide bomber had been intercepted and arrested before he could board a plane. “We don’t have to worry about him anymore,” he said.
The bomb contained no metal. “It is clear that al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is revamping its bomb techniques to try to avoid the causes of the failure of the 2009 device," a White House official said, referring to the Detroit incident on Christmas Day 2009.
King stated that information on the case had been “tightly held,” but it was revealed by Associated Press. He said officials “were shocked that this had gotten out” before the announcement planned for Tuesday.

Maybe now that its transpired the so called bomber is actually a british agent ( but that could change again tomorrow lol) shall King have him whipped off on one of them rendition flights to one of those countries who don`t allow human rights groups or the rights in. They could refuel at the usual stop in Shannon. What ever happened the squad of SAS soldiers disguised as locals who were caught red handed planting a rather large bomb in an Afgan market place. Could they be in Morocco, turky or one of those other shitholes being interrogated. I don`t think so. Hope the American people will be demanding answers on this latest one. Oh thats right they`re not allowed to anymore in the interest of National Security.

A Manhattan a chara, Scríobhaim as dhá theanga de ghnáth toisc gur tábhachtach ceann acu agus is Sacsbhéarla an ceann eile. Ná bac leis an nGaeilge ach leis na fíricí. Ní athraíonn Gaeilge, mo thírghrá, do thírghrá, nó aon rud eile an fhíric gur amadán Peter King agus go bhfuil sé ag obair chun fanacht i gCongress, ní chun tusa nó mise a chosaint. Nó an smaoiníonn tusa i bhfírinne go bhfuil seisean níos fearr ag cosaint ár dtíre agus Nua-Eabhraic ná an FBI, CIA, NYPD, ár bhforsaí armtha, 7rl. /// Hi Manhattan, I write in two languages because one of them is important and the other is English. Don't bother with the Irish Language but with the facts. Irish Gaelic, your patriotism, or my patriotism can't change the fact that Peter King is a fool and he's working to stay in Congress, not to protect you or me. Or do you really believe that Peter King is better at protecting our country and New York than the FBI, CIA, NYPD,our armed forces, etc.?

(To know nothing of what happened before you were born is to remain forever a child. - Cicero) ## ( Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. - George Santayana) ## (Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it. - Winston Churchill) To the poster I can no longer find you are correct, most quote churchill, and I do not dispute your characterization. as well.
pilib04 | May 09, 2012, 05:28 PM EDT
BrianO, with all due respect. The pig Churchill did not coin the phrase "Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." To be sure, that was George Santayana. Churchill had neither the brains nor the morals to come up with a quote like that. Churchill, who presumably is rotting in hell, was responsible for the Black and Tans.

911 all were muslim
Bythebay | May 09, 2012, 10:35 AM EDT
King has no problem supporting IRA terrorists who have carried out far more bombings than any Muslims in the US. I also have heard no outrage from King about the continuing IRA terrorism activity in Northern Ireland.
Bythebay | May 09, 2012, 10:33 AM EDT
Well said EphraimKibbey, one of yours carrying the bomb indeed and Republican Peter King of Nassau County,NY quickly using it to fire up anti-Muslim sentiment again. Shame on him and on those who elect him!
BrianO | May 08, 2012, 11:49 PM EDT
It's the enemy within EphraimKibbey that freedom loving individuals need to worry about. Keep your head on a swivel.
EphraimKibbey | May 08, 2012, 11:43 PM EDT
Well, it looks like we didn't even get the suicide bomber, he was one of ours and part of the black op. Good thing Peter didn't blow our guy's cover any earlier or he would have been dead and the bomb would have been gone. With "friends" like King, who needs enemies?
BrianO | May 08, 2012, 11:41 PM EDT
OLDPerfesser, their point was in defense of nation really one of the direct responsibilities of our current constitution. The barbary pirates were the adversary who regarded their religion as the over riding issue to justify their tyranny. Freedom of religion and observations of hostile forces using religion as their reason to be hostile are two different things.
jamieLM | May 08, 2012, 05:59 PM EDT
@Byethbay, considering you're always telling Americans to butt out of Irish business, you should keep your nose out of ours. Since you're unable to ever be objective about anything concerning the U.S. or Americans, your posts are really boring. Ireland would be perfection, except that you and STEVENSTAR live there. Good news for us in America.
TheOldPerfessor | May 08, 2012, 04:23 PM EDT
BrianO - yes, you certainly know your history. Both of those men went on to be President, and I'd like to see an example of how either of those men used this painful experience to dilute the Constitution's mandate for freedom of religion. Failing in that, I'm just going to have to stick with George W. Bush. "We learn from history that we've learned nothing from history." George Bernard Shaw.
BrianO | May 08, 2012, 02:25 PM EDT
Theoldperfessor,In 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson met with Arab diplomats from Tunis, who were conducting terror raids and piracy against American ships. On March 28, 1786 Jefferson and Adams detailed what they saw as the main issue: “We took the liberty to make some inquiries concerning the Grounds of their pretensions to make war upon a Nation who had done them no Injury, and observed that we considered all mankind as our Friends who had done us no wrong, nor had given us any provocation. The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.” -- -----and let me add---"Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it"- Winston Churchill.

""America treasures the relationship we have with our many Muslim friends, and we respect the vibrant faith of Islam which inspires countless individuals to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and morality. This year, may Eid also be a time in which we recognize the values of progress, pluralism, and acceptance that bind us together as a Nation and a global community. By working together to advance mutual understanding, we point the way to a brighter future for all." George W. Bush

You got that right BrianO. God Bless America.
BrianO | May 08, 2012, 12:58 PM EDT
Amen manhattan. Bythebay an Anti-Irish plant to try to sway opinion, a fake Paddy, knows nothing about the U.S. or Ireland but has a real grasp of what it means to be an Islamist propagandist.

Thank God for Peter King, the CIA and all those working to keep us safe. Amazing that people like Kelly and the always anti American called Bythebay who by the way doesn't even live in America, take the pot shots at Peter King. Are we supposed to be enamored Kelly that you can write in Gaelic? It's people like yourselves that the terrorists love. By the way this is called Irish America not a forum for your hate of this wonderful country.

Níl aon fhadhb agam le hÉireannaigh ag caint faoi imeachtaí i Meiriceá nó Meiriceánaigh ag caint faoi imeachtaí in Éirinn. Is chaoi mhaith é chun foghlaim óna gcéile. (Irish and Americans should comment on each others affairs to they can learn from each other.) In this case, bythebay is right. Peter King represents my district, and he's a complete and utter amadán. He'd have hearings about grandmothers with purple hair if he thought it would get him votes. As for being an oracle, he thought the invasion of Iraq was a great idea. Besides his trumped-up "Muslim-American threat", he's also trotted out the "Spanish-speaking threat". His version of Free Speech is that you can say anything you want as long as it's in English. The ignorant bastún hasn't heard about globalization or the advantage of speaking more than one language. He wrote to me one time that Georgie Bush Jr. was "the greatest President the United States had ever had." Talk about two morons in a mutual-admiration society. Well, go leor ar an ngom sin. Táim braon de agus dá easpa céille.
EphraimKibbey | May 08, 2012, 11:52 AM EDT
Sooo, let me get this timeline straight! First Peter King is advised that a black op is running and a bomb is involved. Then he blabs to the press about it to look wise. Now our security forces are forced to close in on the op and only get the suicide bomber and the bomb but miss out on the bomb maker. Our security guys must be fit to be tied. And our reps in congress wonder why they are left out of the loop sometimes. Thanks Peter, the future victims of this bomb maker are on your conscience if you have one. Unbelievable!
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 11:39 AM EDT
Laughable Americans and their puerile attempts at name calling! Just consider the source!
PhlutiePhan | May 08, 2012, 11:39 AM EDT
There are also reports that Al Qaeda is working on surgically implanting bombs which would not be metal and would probably fool the scanners. Reports are that there was one attempt aleady as practice and it went off too soon. Obviously, they are fine tuning an optimum attempt.
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 11:36 AM EDT
Americans voicing wholly unsupportable and unsustainable opinions about Ireland never stopped doing so despite complaints from people in Ireland. People in Ireland will certainly voice our far more knowledgeable opinions about US activities.
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 11:27 AM EDT
Reality Check: Peter King while alluding to the Muslim Terrorism Threat supported IRA terrorists. Apparently the religion of the so called terrorists is what makes their terrorism suppoortable!
Murph46 | May 08, 2012, 11:21 AM EDT
You are the one who called people out byethebuttinski, not I
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 11:21 AM EDT
Reality Check: Republican Peter King of the 3rd District of Long Island has been holding hearings in the US Congress on "radical Muslims". Picking on another religion to debase all its members of course. Nothing new there.
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 11:16 AM EDT
Americans can dish out opinions about Ireland without restraint, but apparently can't stand people in Ireland having opinions about their politics and society. Too bad, it works both ways mates.
BrianO | May 08, 2012, 11:12 AM EDT
Btb face mecca and destroy Ireland with your new world order, but your ilk is not tolerated anymore. Fake Paddy, if your Muslim world is so terrific why do they suffer so. Women are treated like dogs. Homosexuals are murdered. Jews and Christians are Be-headed. The tolerant religion of peace my a**
Murph46 | May 08, 2012, 11:08 AM EDT
Byethebuttinski-as you have told others to keep their American opinions out of Irish matters,Why don;t you do the same and keep out of American business you busybody!
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 10:59 AM EDT
Reality Check: Republican Peter King's 3rd District of Long Island in Nassau County is 95% white. He is consistently a bigoted anti-Muslim.
Bythebay | May 08, 2012, 10:49 AM EDT
Reality Check: US security agencies alerted about this many weeks ago. Republican Peter King of Long Island, NY is no oracle.
johnshiel | May 08, 2012, 10:45 AM EDT
racism is bad. political correctness run amok is bad. we have the wisdom in our culture to steer between these two disasters, but sometimes we set that guiding wisdom aside when we vote. maybe our times are dire enough to use our power of voting with eyes and ears and brain circuitry wide open,,, ehh?
TheOldPerfessor | May 08, 2012, 09:41 AM EDT
It will be the disappointment of his life if he can't get up to the podium this year after a successful terrorist attack so he can give the only message he owns - "I told you so." Obama didn't torture enough Arabs and America is too serious about this freedom of religion thing in the Constitution.
Paradigm | May 08, 2012, 09:11 AM EDT
So now he's a prophet - not just an opportunist. In fact we're probably all prophets in this 'anniversary' case and there wouldn't have been a word if we'd been wrong.
