A well-known Cork priest has launched a bitter attack on former Cloyne bishop John Magee after Magee had issued a public apology about his actions in covering up  sex abuse on children in his diocese.

Father Michael Mernagh, a priest in his diocese, came to prominence by walking from his parish to Dublin in atonement for victims of child abuse.

In an unprecedented attack on a fellow member of the clergy he described the Bishop's apology as “hollow” and told him he should no longer stay in his diocese.

Father Mernagh, an Augustinian, told Bishop Magee he should "remove himself completely from the good people of North Cork - go back to a monastery of your order and continue to do that penance."

He stated : "What you need to do is to go out in front of the Cathedral in Cobh and there in a purple robe of penance, prostrate yourself for some time, for some days, in fasting and in prayer, and be open to hear the criticism and whatever the people and priests and others would have to say".

Maeve Lewis The Director of One in Four a leading child abuse prevention lobby group  also said Magee  was guilty of  "distorted thinking" and "not taking responsibility"

Lewis, said that it appeared the bishop "didn't get the gravity of his failures".

Finally breaking his silence, the former Bishop John Magee had said he apologizes “unreservedly” to victims of child sex abuse in the former dioceses of Cloyne.

In a statement, he said he would be “very willing” to meet victims and their families privately is they wished.

“I also apologized to victims of abuse in this statement and I unreservedly apologize to these victims again today. I publicly apologized to victims of abuse in the Diocese, in Cobh Cathedral, on Christmas Eve 2008,” the bishop said.

Published in July, the report into clerical sex abuse found that Bishop Magee misled the minister for children when he informed them guidelines for handling abuse accusations were being complied with.

The report also found he that told the Health Service Executive that abuse allegations were being reported to the Irish police.

“Given my position of responsibility, I am particularly saddened when I read the accounts of the complainants describing the effects of the abuse, knowing that I contributed to their distress.”

The former bishop said he had met some of the victims and listened to their stories.

“The people, who were so terribly abused by priests, found the courage to come forward to talk to me, or to my delegate, Msgr [Denis] O’Callaghan who was representing me, and in many cases, we failed them.

“I am sorry that this happened and I unreservedly apologise to all those who suffered additional hurt because of the flawed implementation of the Church procedures, for which I take full responsibility.”

“I also want to say that I feel there is nothing I can say now, which will ease the pain and distress for victims.

“I fully understand why they are angry - I let them down, by not fully implementing the guidelines which were available to me.

“I deeply, deeply regret not ensuring that the guidelines, which were my responsibility to implement, were not complied with and I ask for forgiveness for the way in which I have carried out this critically important aspect of my work.”

Pope Paul VI in a statement released not so long prior to his passing warned us that the "Smoke of Satan" had entered the Church. In a myriad of ways this has proved true. Doctrine and dogma are sound enough. The problems arise when those specifically responsible for adhering to those tenants fail to do so. From both a practical as well as a Spiritual perspective there's more at play here than any of us may now realize. We MUST pray for ALL those who are in any involved.
catholicabusesurvivorsni.com--- he could walk and help clerical abuse victims, off a plank in the middle of the ocean.
I only learned about the concept of a "reserved sin" on this board. This is a sin which an ordinary priest can not forgive in Confession; it must go higher up. Now tell me, if an abuse, or even a beating victim, threw one punch at his abuser, or kicked him, would that count as a "reserved sin", if the abuser/beater was a priest? If the answer from the Catholic heirachy is "yes", then the modern Catholic Church is worse off then I thought!
Abused.N.I., I disagree. These monsters need to serve jail time for their crimes against humanity. These are rapists and need to be punished by the criminal justice system. Being a priest or bishop does not make them immune from criminal prosecution.
Apologize. He should be in prison. Isn't that where Ireland puts its rapists?
I'm from Co,Antrim in Northern Ireland, and was Abused at the age of nine by these evil so-called-men-of-god that Magee would do anything to defend, does he know the pain and hurt we have suffered by the hands of these people he defends.I will ask him the same question that I've asked to the Roman Catholic people in Ireland,And also too the Catholic people everywhere. As a former member of the Catholic Church and a child-abuse victim, I would like to ask the members and the Church as a whole one question. We victims are hurt, annoyed and angry at the way the Church is handling the worldwide abuse that went on within its ranks. Would they open their hearts, minds and souls and honestly agree with me that anyone within the Catholic Church - no matter what office they hold - if they are found guilty of child-abuse, they should be excommunicated? It is the only way that victims are ever going to believe that the Church has the victims' best interests at heart . When our government finally gets the inquiry into child-abuse here under way, people will be shocked by what it reveals.

"History shows us that few churches ever exerted such domineering social power as the Irish Catholic Church. It specialized almost exclusively in sin, shame, Satan and hell; or why God should be feared(?!), and what terrible vengeance and judgment awaited us all. We were not worthy of His Love, or so they taught for centuries -- an arrogant slap in the face to the very God they "quoted," who spoke ONLY of His Love for His Children Whom He made in His Own Image of Perfection and Purity.Small wonder that so many of those who could never teach love, never understand forgiveness, never accept the Unity of All God's Children, and embraced judgment like a blunt instrument of punishment, would wind up lost at sea themselves -- degenerating into abusers of innocent children, and even worse, into protectors and guardians of the abusers. They helped teach Ireland to hate, to never forgive, to fear, to be suspicious. Now, they are the hated, and the ones who can never be forgiven, not even by their own people and not even in spite of many, many, many good and Godly works they have done for them."***Since writing his scathing condemnation of the Roman Catholic “church “Fr. Tim”, a Jesuit priest, seems to be “missing in action”, and no longer appears on the roster of blogs at Irish Central! No one seems to know the whereabouts of “Fr. Tim” but in all likelihood, he has been spirited off to some remote monastery consigned to a life of penance and silence for the unforgiveable crime of telling the TRUTH!
Is Cloyne Bishop John Magee being scapegoated for all the crimes in Ireland? It seems so.
Yes,prosecute, punish, pay reparation, change the laws ,all of the above necessary but not sufficent. The Cloyne situation shows that these are just bandaids for an ingrained source problem that has been festering since the Schism. It has intensified as scientific knowledge advanced. -The Teacher does not believe his teachings. Homer Simpson put his finger on the core of it --paraphrased, he asked 'how can I belong to those weirdos who eat their Saviour's body and drink his blood.' It is difficult to even imagine how it will all playout. For my part, while the storms rage,I am very comfortable going along with those voices and actions that reflect the essence of that person JESUS and revere him for what he did to advance the welfare of all humanity-think about it ,that's one belief that's easy to take.!
Source: Irish Central / Article: Memo to Irish Catholic Church: Your services are no longer needed /Posted by Father Tim at 7/4/2009/ EXCERPT: “My friends, For the Catholic Church in Ireland, the game is over. The Irish people, and I am convinced it is the majority, no longer wish to have the Catholic Church in their country, or in their lives, and possibly not in their faith. I cannot blame them. The Church is solely to blame for this, from front to back, start to finish. It is reaping what it sowed. Although running away from a fire rather than toward it is not the example many of us in the Church believe should be our service to God and His Children, it may be best for all that we settle up our debts, hand over our criminals, and catch the next plane out of Dublin. I am sure that, after a transition period, many of the services the Church provides in Ireland can be contracted to others, and I would hope whatever damage settlements we must and should pay will smoothe that changeover. There is simply no way that an institution so horribly tainted and so utterly mistrusted can or should speak in the name of Jesus Christ in Ireland, nor attempt to project spiritual and moral leadership.”***Shortly after writing his scathing condemnation of the Roman Catholic “church “Fr. Tim”, a Jesuit priest, "went missing" as they say, and his blog no longer appears on the roster of blogs at Irish Central! No one seems to know the whereabouts of “Fr. As someone who has suffered all of this and remained in one piece, just about. They took everything else. They sure as hell are not taking the Catholic Faith from me too, one our mothers, grandmothers and those before sweated blood and tears to pass on to us. I am all for kickin' as many sorry asses as possible, and have tried to do so, as able in my own battle. I wish the laiety would band together, good people of faith, good clerics too, and we all know at least one I am sure, all the good people - rather than be mistrustful - and tell that lot to take a running jump. I used much more colourful language for a very long time. But won't give that to them now either. Was time to rise from the degradation they left you to lie in. If it were not for the faith passed on to me by our parents and predecessors, I would most definitely have died long ago. That's the truth. Faith pulled me through the darkest hours. And I do understand and accept many can't have anything to do with Catholic faith life again and respect them wholly for it too. Don't give them what is yours though - what they have no right to take from you. Just as they had no right to take our innocence. Whatever your thoughts, feelings, reactions/actions, I understand it all. If they can't get on their knees and wash feet - they are not servants of Christ. That's the example He gave, not kissing rings and certainly not kissing ass either. Theirs truly were made for a seriously good kicking. :) God bless us all. Caoimhin.
Bishop MaGee should be prosecuted! SO THE QUESTION REMAINS . . WHY HASN'T HE? ? ? Thomas Doyle has the answer: “Over two-thirds of the U.S. bishops have knowingly covered sexual abusers and in so doing have directly caused the ruination of the souls and often the bodies of countless more victims. The almighty Vatican, for all its carefully tooled statements of concern has not called a single bishop to accountability. A few have resigned but so what? They have committed crimes with impunity. Why? Because they are bishops and in the magical thinking of the papacy, bishops are above hard-ball justice. Some bishops have even been sexual abusers themselves. None have been defrocked. I have seen consistent, hard evidence of a radical disconnect between the mandate of Christ in the Gospel in reference to such matters, and the actual actions of the bishops and the popes. In short, the popes (JP2 and Benedict XVI) and the bishops have not acted as Christians but rather as agnostic, self-serving businessmen.”**Thomas Doyle, J.C.D. / January 1, 2010** Fr Thomas Patrick Doyle OP, a US Dominican priest with a doctorate in canon law, is a renowned and outspoken advocate for church abuse victims.
I cant speak for anyone else, but I am keenly struck by two aspects of Pio's life. 1) He was denied the right to say mass by at least one if not two Popes. 2) His subsequent beatification was the last thing I ever expected. Perhaps, from the point of view of the Holy See there was comfort to be found in the old maxim "keep your friends close to you, and your enemies closer still!!!"
Despite the self-inflicted wounds of the Church, the Faithful must stay to help keep the pressure on both the relevant Vatican departments/congregations and local hierarchies to be accountable to both state and laypeople. I do not charge our present pope with criminal neglect or recklessness as he has been in the vanguard to push change change through since his days in the Congregation For the Doctrine of the Faith. The problem boils down to a culture of non-accountability and presumed entitlement which goes directly against the humility and service advocated by the gospels. Reform starts within the hearts and souls of all who are tasked with teaching and preaching in the Church and this should extend to laypeople as well as we are all in need of God's Grace from time to time.
@LiamKeyes & Eiriamach - I originally quoted a simplified translation of his account of an Apparition; the actual document uses much more effusive language. The key lines though that struck a chord with me are as follows; "Jesus went away from that crowd of priests and with a great expression of disgust on his face, cried’: “Butchers!” Then He told me: “My Child, do not believe that my agony has been only three hours, no; actually I will be in agony till the end of the world because of the souls I love. During the time of the agony, my child, nobody can sleep. My soul goes looking for some drop of human pity, but they leave me alone under the weight of their indifference. The ingratitude and the sleep of my ministers increase the agony for me. They badly respond to my love! The greater torment for me is that these people add their contempt to their indifference and disbelief. How many times my wrath was to strike them like lightning, but I was stopped by the angels and the souls who love me....." Strong words indeed!!
