In a preview of Pope Benedict' s letter to the Irish people, expected on Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 17, the Pope will "acknowledge the tremendous contribution of the Irish to the church worldwide from the time of the golden age of monasticism to the modern missionary movement.

"The Pope will express his complete abhorrence at clerical child sexual abuse. There may well be a call for a proper understanding of proper sexual health among clergy but also in society, and a re-statement of the church’s position on healthy sexual morality.”

The preview was offered by Garry O’Sullivan, editor of Irish Catholic, writing in The Irish Times and quoting senior church sources. In the piece he continues:

“He will commend the child protection initiatives taken to date and ask that they be brought to fruition within the church. Finally, he will call on the whole Irish church to sit in fellowship and ask that the Gospel be preached by clergy and religious, working together with the laity in order to bring about the renewal of Gospel values and faith in the Irish church. "

O'Sullivan also stated that the Dublin archdiocese intends to become a " national champion" for children and demand that every other civil institution be held to its standards.

The Dublin archdiocese has been at the center of the horrific child abuse allegations contained in the recent Murphy report that resulted in the firing of four bishops to date.

O'Sullivan quoted Archbishop Diarmuid Martin as stating that the diocese will be transformed  "because when you have seismic moments you need a qualitative leap to a different view of church.

"By establishing the archdiocese as a national leader in child protection Archbishop Martin would position himself as a champion for Irish children and challenge the State and its institutions to follow suit at a time when the State is cutting resources to social services."

O'Sullivan asks: "If 4 per cent of abusers are clergy or religious (SAVI Report 2002), then who is championing the rights of the children affected by the other 96 per cent?"

He also states that "Archbishop Martin will push ahead with reforms in the Dublin archdiocese based on his experience of the church in Europe, removing the failed structures so clearly identified in the Murphy report and distancing the archdiocese as fully as possible from those priests who were “collectively responsible” for what his administration agrees was a “cover-up.”

O'Sullivan says there are bright days ahead for the Dublin archdiocese. "Change is being talked about; the albatross of mismanagement is finally being removed, and the diocese will be positioned to expend all its energies in reaching out and ministering to people in the challenges of their daily lives, the life and death stuff that they, priests, were ordained for.

HI, my name is Pat Doran Norco Ca. A Daingean 'detainee' (via Dublin) 1958-60. I have recently tried to give 'a victims' account (with solution(s) to I.C's. Niall O'Dowd but so far have just gotten 'the deaf ear'..(and expecting the same from the present writer of this story) Bottom line, our Pope is a hypocrite pretending "it's news to me'; BULL SHIT... To the point that I am now going to put all the dirty facts (and solutions)on a new website; which will include facts that I offered Ir. Central, and now again by this to RTE. AND I WILL TAKE A LIVE BROADCAST POLYGRAPH TO SUPPORT... THIS POPE AND THOSE BEFORE HIM KNEW ABOUT PEDOPHILE AND SADIST PERVERTS (THE DIFFERENCE THERE BEING... ONE OPENDED THEIR PANTS AND THE OTHER CLOSED THEIR FISTS (I WAS A VICTIM OF THE CLOSED FIST TYPE). MY PROMISE TO YOU THE READER.. BECAUSE Ir.CENTRAL, RTE and others JUST DON'T SEEM TO WANT TO PUBLISH IT; I AM GOING TO ADD IT TO WEB SITE(S) I ALREADY HAVE www.icvmbf.org (Irish Children Victims Memorial Building Funder) and www.scdtspotlight.com (soon to change to) www.dtspotlight.com NEITHER ONE OF WHICH IS ASKING FOR YOUR (or anyone elses) MONEY.. The facts that I gave (in a D.V.D. as part of my application to the Redress Board) is going to be part of it..... THE COVER-UP HAS TO COME TO AN END.... AND THE PEDOPHILES AND SADIST'S WHO HAVE BEEN PRACTICING UNDER THE COVER OF A HABIT, COLLAR AND/OR CROSS, SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR THE CRIMINALS THAT THEY ARE...PERIOD!! "REAL" Priest's (and on up)... who were operating under a code/policy/endoctrination of SILENCE AND OBEDIENCE, MUST (as it already has) END!! Note: I myself am not a church goer, but my parents were and found great comfort in the church; I would like for my parents type belivers to have their church to remain open under a "new" No Perverts (be they Pedophiles or Sadists) allowed!! Agree or Disagree? email or call 951-2647103 pat.doran@sbcglobal.net We Irish are the only ones that can clear/clean our name... If not us...WHO????
The current Pope has been in a position to know about the problems for decades and did nothing. He has been Pope for years and has pretended surprise and apoligized in the USA, Australia Ireland and other countries. What has he done in a concrete manner to remove those who have sheltered the abusive priests from power? Nothing. He probably speaks today with "mental reservation" which in laymans terms means lying.
Killowen: Are you being serious or just facetious? How are bishops, archbishops, cardinals and even the Pope, "Saviors of the world for g=d's own Jesus?" Jesus had very stern words for anyone who would hurt, harm or abuse a child. Jesus, also known as Yeshua, taught, "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin (Luke 17:2). (International version of the New Testament) Coincidentally, in the Book of Revelations of St. John the Divine, he teaches that an apostate church, "who sits on 7 hills," will be destroyed when the "Great Angel" throws a stone "Like a Great Millstone" down on this Church to destroy it. (See Revelations 18:21). So, my friend, God is not asleep, and these sinful, unrighteous men are not His priests. Fat too soon, they will meet their Maker!
saviours of the world for g-d's own jesus its about time to acknowledge that.
I think all the guilty, no matter what their position, should step down for the greater good.
The question is why this Pope, at the time he was Prefect For The Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, did little or nothing to stop these terrible crimes against the children, young people and vulnerable adults of our church. He keeps saying the Church is sorry....But how many times can one say "Sorry" and still expect to be believed? It Cheapens Our Church & And Insults Almighty GOD.
This preview does not answer any of the burning questions on responsibility and accountability. What is the proper role of the bishops, who is responsible for making sure that they fulfill their role, and who is responsible when they don't? Is the Pope ever responsible for anything? If not, why is he the one who gets to nominate and revoke bishops?
I foresee that the Vatican will distance Herself and Her previous dictats, regarding the intimidation tactics used to silence the Survivors of Priest Pedophilia and their parents, and make it appear as if the local Hierarchy in Ireland simply pulled their insidious treatment of the abused, "Out of Thin Air!" Disregarding the simply fact that Survivors of Priest/Nun Pedophilia and their families have been treated with distain and their cases Ecclesiastically Obfuscated, in like manner, all over the world, the Vatican thinks that the Laity has been "too dumbed-down," to get to the endemic and systemic root of the problem, which sits in the current "Chair of Peter." As Prefect of the CDF and Head of the College of Cardinals there is no one else in the Church, who possessed the intricate knowledge of decades of Cover-ups and Vatican Dictats, concerning the treatment of the abused, as did the current Pope. He can't push the blame off on anyone else or any local potentate, bishop or Vatican pawn. To be credible, he must acknowledge his part in orchestrating these abhorrently sinful and on-going coverups. Checkmate!
I think it is abhorent that the Pope is not willing to take responsibility for his part in all this. All he is doing is praising the Irish Catholic church, and saying that all of society should stick to doing what's right. There is no apology in his letter, and yet he is the one who would have been privy to all this information in his position as head of the Inquisition - or the Congregations for the Fatih, whatever the official name is. When is he going to understand that words are cheap, and he needs to actually DO something about all of this!! Empty words, no action is all he ever offers.
Hmm Now are these 4% Abusers all in one parish or are they spread around or what sorry benny it don't cut it.And Mr o Sullivan you keep taking the Meds as long as it seems bright and sunny....lololol "Change is being TALKED about"
