Potential Presidential candidate Gay Byrne has caused his first political storm – after claiming that Ireland is being run by ‘mad people in Brussels’.

Byrne, 77, yet to confirm that he will run as an independent candidate in the autumn election, is known to be anti the European Union. He is expected to announce after this weekend he is running.

But this latest outburst will cause problems for the Fianna Fail party falling over themselves to back him as a candidate and spare themselves the trouble and expense of mounting a Presidential election campaign.

For someone yet to show their hand regarding the race to replace Mary McAleese, Byrne was very critical of the EU.

The veteran broadcaster blasted: “The current crisis in Ireland is a culmination of my concerns down the years”.

The 77-year-old Byrne added: “I never thought we would reach the disastrous phase we are at the moment in Europe in my lifetime.

“I eventually thought it would come in my grandchildren’s time but it has come much, much quicker that I visualized and it is happening even as we speak.”

Byrne’s comments are totally at odds with Fianna Fail’s pro-Europe stand and may damage his chances of support from the opposition party.

He also attacked the Euro when he spoke – bizarrely at the Dublin premiere of the musical Grease”
“The euro was a crazy notion from the very beginning,” claimed Byrne.

“We crossed the Rubicon when we joined the single currency. I think there is no backing out now but it is a mad, mad world and we are being run by mad people in Brussels.”

Asked by reporters if his stance on Europe would affect his potential Presidential campaign, Byrne added: “It might or might not. I haven’t changed my mind.”

In the past Byrne has described the Lisbon Treaty as ‘unintelligible bilge’.

He also described the Yes campaign in the Lisbon Treaty referendum as ‘sneaky, dishonest, under-handed’ and said he didn’t believe a word from the mouths of any of the ‘Yes’ brigade.

Developer Harry Crosbie, who accompanied Byrne and his wife Kathleen to the Grease launch, vowed to financially back any bid for the Presidency by the veteran broadcaster.

“I think the people love him and they cry out for him in the night. Go Gaybo, go,” said Crosbie as Byrne revealed that he has been inundated with offers of financial support.

God bless this man! I hope he wins. You are right FatherVol, there will be a possible war in Ireland if something is not done. A war, or a massacre similar to what happened in Norway god forbid. Ireland must learn from the lessons of Norway & the recent riots in London.
I like this guy, but it's more than the euro. Ireland grabbed ahold of the coattail of the messianic EEU. Unfortunately, it is run by crooked financiers and corporate leaders. Wait, watch and see: the smae decline in native heritage, cultural integrity, and economic stability is coming to other EEU nations just as has befallen Greece and Ireland. And, the Fourth Reich will rise without tanks and machine guns.
Bocktherobber -- "It was all caused by the Euro". That's nonsense. But it should be pointed out that the same Fianna Fail gangsters who on two occasions failed to respect the will of the Irish people on the EU also flouted the people's will on Mass Immigration.
wanakbrannan: You should know that most immigrants in Ireland are white. They're Latvians, Poles, Bulgarians etc. The color of immigrants' skins is irrelevant. The problem is Mass Immigration, that's what destroys Irish communities, regardless of ethnic origin of those who are flooding in.
Brussels says the Gay Byrne's campaign is being run by mad people in Fianna Fail.
Joining the EU was a BIG mistake as Germany will eventually be running the show and the rest of the members will just be their pawns.
That's right. It was all caused by the Euro. Nothing to do with the crooks who ran the banks or the idiots who ran the government. What a towering intellect Gay Byrne is and what a great start to his campaign for an office that's supposed to be above politics.
Typo = That's: RTE contracts - (the Irish national broadcaster. His opponents are sure to object to this unfair advantage.) T.
@ nicgearailt: Spot on! If this sniddling lick-spittle who has 'shaped Irish opinion' in his broadcasts ( without the accountability and jeopardy a politician faces... ) is elected, then that's all we ever need to know about the Irish electorate. His TRE contracts and supporting Media connections should dis-bar him from running but those elements and his FF Parish Pump (The Mammymafia) support might swing it for him personally; but will make Ireland even more of a laughing stock! - and Byrne will be laughing last; loudest; and longest!
The Truth is the Truth is the Truth!!!
Could it be that Ireland elected inadequate politicians to be in charge of running the country, and they remained inadequate? It is not enough that you can smile ,shake hands and give jobs to party hacks in return for votes.Ireland needs smarter, educated in business, citizens to run the country..that will take a giant leap of faith. Gay is getting attention these days..where was he all these past years?..maybe I missed that.. First thing you must do when you complain about something in public...you must state what your solution might be..so lets hear it Gay...
Franfort might be more accurate. Geithner dictates to Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Bank dictates to Merkel, Merkel dictates to Brussels. The New Irish Ascendancy lives abroad, extracting "rent" in the form of having the government pay the debts to Frankfort of privately owned Irish banks. This is indeed mad, but its the Irish government that's mad for paying.
he is 100% right over EU whose agents common purpose run Eire now.
