Pope Benedict set for Irish visit in 2012

The Irish Bishops' Conference has formally invited the Pope.

Pope Benedict is expected to visit Ireland in 2012 for the International Eucharistic Conference, Irish church sources say.  It will be held in Dublin.

Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, yesterday revealed that the Bishops' Conference has now formally issued the invitation, the Irish Independent reports.

Insiders say a papal visit would go some way to finally put to rest the issue of child sex abuse by clergy and help the struggling Irish church regain some momentum. A meeting with child abuse survivors would almost certainly be on the agenda.

Archbishop Martin stated the invitation had been acknowledged by the Vatican. The Pontiff will be 85 at the time of the proposed visit but he has been in robust health up to this point.

A separate invitation by the survivors of child for the Pope to meet them in Ireland was given by Archbishop Martin during this week's summit in Rome, when 24 Irish bishops visited there, but this has not yet been replied to.

The leader of a survivors group, Andrew Madden, said Archbishop Martin was not as strong when  he met with him after his return from Rome, saying he "came across as a very different man to the man" he met last Saturday in advance of his trip to Rome.

"I put it to him that he appeared to have had his wings clipped in Rome and that this might go some way to explaining why his fellow bishops seemed so happy on their return to Ireland," said  Madden.

Erm, the person who posted the "Brutal Dictatorship" post - whoever you are. Not only are your comments ridiculous and uninformed, you apparently are unable to uncover your own face to say them, posting as you have under someone else's name. I think that says it all.
This man represents the longest lived most wonderful congregation of good people the world has ever seen, the Catholic church is responsible for the many charitable organisations who take care of and educate hundreds of millions, they have no problem treating half the population of the world as human and children of God, and you good Irish Catholics will turn out by the thousands to honor him. You are absolutely marvellous people and God loves you and so do I.

Billy Joel sings "And Only The Good Die Young" Pope John Paul The First only reigned for thirty three days. A holy man may he rest in peace. At eighty something we're stuck with this evil crow Benedict for another ten years or more. God help us.
JohnB4sanity: I do not know who you are or where you come from. But the Catholic Church has always recovered from disasters and will still be standing and her Pope intact long after you are pushing up daisies.Trust me.
This man represents the longest lived most brutal dictatorship the world has ever seen, the Catholic church is responsible for the rape, killing and subjugation of hundreds of millions, they have no problem treating half the population of the world as sub-human, and you Irish assholes will turn out by the thousands to honor him. You are pathetic.
Good for JohnB4sanity. The pope is as tone deaf about Ireland as he is about HIV in Africa. He is going through a verbally severe rebuke of Irish bishops. But they all can keep their jobs/ He cannot, apparently, feel and respond appropriately to people not in the hierarchy. He puts the preservation of the organization above the proper function of the Church.
I hope this arrogant son of perdition drops dead soon.... Real soon, And as for Eucharistic Congress Whatever that is should be banned and no Religious events should be allowed to take place on public land in a Multicultural multi religious Nation, Ireland needs no popes,It is time to end this priest ridden society and put religion where it belongs ... In the privacy of ones own home.
Well said JohnB4sanity... This Vatican has lost it's moral compass, and this pope, his credibility. The true saints remain the people who help the sick and the poor and the broken, not these men who have put lawyers before the word of God and the good of the children.
It is about time to take a clinical look at the situation. The leading light of Christianity is simply unable to respond appropriately. From a social level this is dysfunctional behavior that is detrimental to society as a whole. It is about time we began to treat these broken people as the poor and sad example of a broken religion as they are. The question is just how long are they going to keep society in a state of blackmail while they attempt to defend the indefensible and to apply the very broken things that have caused untold harm to so many. When religion gets to act in this way it is no longer a religion. It becomes a sickness in society just as it has done, a sickness that is unable to cure itself due to its own unyielding dogmas which it requires to be forced on to the whole of society. There are and will be no social improvements on the horizon while this problem remains unresolved. It is possibly the saddest event to witness in a lifetime when society becomes violently and sexually consumed by its leading religions.
Erm, I think people are missing a couple of points here... The Pope has been invited to attend the Eucharistic Congress in Ireland. He has not been invited here to apologise for anything. His possible attendance has nothing to do with making apologies for anything to anybody. Secondly, the invitation is to the Pope. Please God, for the clerically-abused and newly recanting Catholic people of Ireland, Pope Benedict will still be the Pope in two years time and hopefully have something to say to us all on the topic; he might not be. People die, you see. He is 82 years old, already we see signs of his physical disability and he might not be the Pope in two years time. The Pope who will be in Rome in two years time is the Pope who has been invited to the International Eucharistic Congress. I can see the Phoenix Park once again being filled with over a million people for this event. I hope to be alive and well to be there in two years time. Do and will you?
It's a start....perhaps even just the beginning of the start, but the faith is strong in Ireland.
Ah, yes, smoothing over. That's the way.
