People of Ireland want general election this year

Sixty percent of the Irish population want a general election before the year is out, according to a new opinion poll by Irish Sun/Red C.

The results show that six out of ten voters want a General Election this year as support for the main parties continues to plummet.

And one in three voters want Labour leader Eamonn Gilmore to become the next leader of the country, according to the poll.

Despite the fact that Gilmore appears to be the country’s favorite to take over from Cowen as Taoiseach, his lead at the top of the popularity chart has taken a minor slide from the  40percent of the population who wanted him as Taoiseach  in a previous poll to the 33pc in the latest one.

Fine Gael's Enda Kenny received 27percent while current leader  Brian ‘Biffo’ Cowen has just 18 percent of the country supporting him in his present role as Taoiseach (Prime Minister).

Cowen has been the victim of endless satirization in Ireland; only days ago a new website - nobnation.com - launched with a strong focus on the present leader.

The Taoiseach’s support seems to be weakest in Dublin, the nation’s capital, with just 13 percent wanting him as Taoiseach in that location,

Those most eagerly calling for an election are the youth, who have been most badly affected by the economic downturn: a massive 69% of 25 to 34 year olds want an election in the next five months.

Seriously, on the topic: these polls are ridiculous things for news media to be putting their researchers onto when this Govt was elected by the people of Ireland to run a 5-year term of office. We need a Govt to run the country, mistakes an' all - especially an experienced one. If I was looking for someone for a vacancy that I might have, experience would be a certain criterion. Neither of the Fine Gael or Labour parties has seen the inside of a cabinet room for 15 years. Aimin-nowhere-except-below-the-belt Gilmore would not be invited for interview in my office. His party hasn’t even got a full policy document in place, never mind proposals to improve Ireland's lot. And that would be the End'a Kenny too. No chancers need apply to run my country, thanks but no thanks. I think this Govt is doing a very good job in restrictive and difficult global economy circumstances, mostly - let us not forget it - brought about by American financial institutions’ greedy mismanagement and subsequent collapses.
69% of the young want an election?? Sure not even 10% of them will bother to cast their vote! When you think of it, just like their attitude towards religion, they don’t turn up for what matters. Where there’s drink and drugs they’ll turn up. Discos, pubs, weddings and even funerals – so long as a drink and craic is to be found. Now there’s an idea: free booze at polling stations, only after you’ve cast a vote.
