Robert Kelly, a licensed psychologist and therapist, has pleaded guilty to attacking his 20-year-old daughter, Megan, while she slept. Although he admits to the murder he refuses to give a reason for the attack.

On 9th May 2011, Kelly (53) went into his daughter’s bedroom in their home, in Oxford, Michigan, and beat her around the head with a baseball bat.

On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and now faces up to 30 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole after 20 years.

A police dispatcher, Tony Van Houten, testified “I asked him if he knew who did it. And he stated, ‘Yes, I did’,” reports Detroit Free Press.

Julie Roberts, Kelly’s ex-wife who was living with them at the time, found her daughter bleeding and unconscious.

Having beaten Megan around the head he walked to the Oxford Village police station at 8am and confessed.

Megan fell into a coma and was removed from life support on 27th July 2011.

Kelly’s defense lawyer Sanford Schulman said he did not know why his client had committed the murder. He added “It’s obviously a mental health issue.”

“From what we can tell, he loved his daughter deeply. They were very close. It was like something in him snapped. So that's why this plea deal seemed appropriate…I've handled over 60 murder cases, and this is the strangest one,” Schulman said.

The Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry found Kelly competent for trial. However, an expert testified that he was “unable to distinguish right from wrong” on the night of the murder.

Kelly will go to trial on 11th July.

bogsidebunny Funny thing is can't think of a single killing in the past 30 years where someone who has been convicted has gotten a suspended sentence in Ireland. Going back further yea might have been someone who did it while drunk driving but heck in most states that's normally just a fine and a telling off for being stupid still ain't it? Where as in Ireland you could get the same time you would if you shot them. After all being drunk and driving is Mental Health issue you choose to have. Personally think the Irish system is the better one. I do agree too many people are sent to jail for stupid things but being stupid isn't a valid defence in Ireland.
butlerreport Guilty or innocent you'd have executed him. Simple solutions for simple minds
This extraordinary case calls for several reflections. First it is a mistake to take confessions at face value. The girl's body was discovered by the man's ex-wife. She is a far more obvious suspect. Sexual jealousy, conviction that her husband had the hots for his daughter and that this affected his ability to have sex with her, is the most plausible motive. The fact the man refuses to give a motive suggests either the motive is sexual and he is too ashamed of it, or he is covering up for his ex-wife. The girl is pretty and sexy: some motive of sexual obsession is no doubt behind it, the only question is which of the adults decided to eliminate this 'diabolical' temptress.
If he lived in Texas, Florida or Virginia we'd fry the f*cker. Mental health issue my ass.
This tends to prove the old adage that psychologists/psychiatrists are nuts themselves
If he hada done that in Ireland with a hurley he would have received a 10 year jail sentence----suspended! Putting someone in jail cost money. Jail must be preserved for people who do not pay for their annual TV License ($200) or their annual motor tax (between $100 & $600 depending on the engine size). See jail can be a huge money producer.
bunkerisland, I agree. That might be why he gave no explanation for the murder.
Very strange, truth usually 'comes out'. The ex-wife living in the same house is quite puzzling!
Sickening & deplorable, that's what I have to say! I did learn, years ago, that suicide by profession goes: #1-Dentists; #2-Psychiatrists. The 2nd may also include psychologists; I'm not sure.
Let us not confuse psychiatry with psychology or each of the professions. Perhaps we should also carefully examine the body of this young woman for other forms of abuse.
Turning this into an indictment of psychiatry is really pretty stupid. He's getting life. That's all that matters.
Such a horrible shame. Not so surprising considering that the Psychiatry profession has one of the highest suicide rates. Sounds like he just snapped!! Hmmmm, that's the reason I didn't go any further after my BA in Psych. Figured my Art degree was more....shall we say....beneficial to my well-being!!!
My first and only encounter with a psychiatrist was a crazy hateful bigoted man. The profession is way over-rated and seems to have replaced God and spirituality. I feel deeply for this psychologist who seems to have let his own demons take over. The Apostle John is quoted as having said "the bow that is always taut surely breaks." Sound advice for every human everywhere.
