New airplane seat for Ryanair resembles a saddle

A man struggles to fit into one of the saddle-like seats Ryanair is proposing for its flights.

Earlier this year, Michael O’Leary, the eccentric Chief Executive of low budget airline Ryanair, set out proposals for vertical seats abroad his airplanes which were later quashed by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Now a radical new airplane seat that Ryainair may try could increase passenger capacity by 40% and has been unveiled in Long Beach, New York.

The SkyRider is a compact seat which resembles a saddle and was designed and manufactured by Italy-based Avioninteriors.

Passengers in the saddle like SkyRider are in a semi-standing position. The seats have been designed to allow only 23 inches of space between each row of seats where as traditional airline seats are 31-35 inches apart. It is yet to be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration or snapped up by any major airline.

Dominique Menoud, director general of Aviointeriors Group said the SkyRider would only be used for short flights.

“For flights anywhere from one to possibly even up to three hours this would be comfortable seating,” he said.

Menoud added that the saddle like structure was key to the design, “The seat is like a saddle. Cowboys ride eight hours on their horses during the day and still feel comfortable in the saddle.”

Unveiled at an Aircraft Interiors expo in New York, the new design met with a lot of skepticism from consumers who struggled to squeeze into the tightly-spaced seats.

MICHAEL, before you go ... We still have a good bit to squeeze out of them yet: Standing Room seats! Personal body-weight excesses: Work yer Passage seats. Coughing, sneezing and farting charges, a pound a piss ... on and on. New Proposal: See attached Deck Layout for those inventive New World shippers!...
Would not fly this way. What if the "cowboy" had someone in front of his saddle and someone behind, would he still be comfortable??? What about all the obese people that could not fit in the seat??
I think Michael O' Leary should ban all luggage and have the baggage compartment converted into usable space for passengers to travel in. Low class people would be very comfortable there I'm sure. He could then convert some of his his planes to carry baggage only. That would enable him to remove the seating on the luggage only flights. It seems perfectly logical. Regarding the saddle seating, I have no problem with that, but is he providing side saddle facilities for virgins ?????????? Or is he leaving that to Richard Branson. I am a keen supporter of Michael O'Leary and just as Nicholas Chauvin never saw any fault with Napoleon ( hence chauvinism ) Silling is of like mind re Ryan Air.
Give me strength !! 3 hours sitting in a saddle seat with the persons head in front of me about 20 inches from my nose? thanks, but no thanks. Best go back to the drawing board on this little venture.
Would it help if the seats were horse-shaped?
Ever ridden in a saddle? Why do cowboys walk weird and have bowed legs? I walk weird when I get down as well. When I'm not used to riding, I can hardly move when I get off my horse. Whose bright idea is this?? Must come from a no-experienced engineer-type. Looks good on paper but can't fly in the real world!
ride Sally ride.
Monsoonman - are they wasting space on toilets?
Whenever I fly i wear my kilt for comfort and I am always commando, so ryanair is off my list.
A cowboy may be in the saddle all day, but he can move around on a horse, lean forward, back and side to side, and get off when he wants to. Don't see anyone being able to do that on those seats. And what if you're wearing a skirt (or kilt)???
Oh my b..... that's painful. May be ok for ladies but then what do I know.,
dessieglynn: "I wonder how many of the people who commented on this ever flew Ryanair." I have flown RyanAir. Have You? I don't see them as any worse than anyone else, and the seats are actually more comfortable than airlines like Delta and Continental. The only problem is not having assigned seatng, that means you have to sprint to the plane to get a good seat. And I don't like the way they add on charges, but they all do it. I just checked Continental for a flight to Dublin. It was quoted as about $500, but when I went to book it it had gone up to nearly $700 with all the tax and charges.
hee hee
Kell: Are you a Harvard MBA? Excellent business idea, the priests last rites, on the deceased's credit card. For nominal additional charge: Flag draped coffins shot out of the back of the aircraft at 35,000' or economy cremation with ashes spread out over the Atlantic. Win, win, win for Ryanair.
Michael O’Leary muttering to himself. . . My god, they're still taking it. . . I'm running out of new ways to abuse and degrade people.
