Same-sex marriages performed in New York will be recognized as Irish Civil Partnerships from December 25, following a new order delivered this week by Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter. 

'This is excellent news for those Irish people in New York who have married since the law was enacted there this July,' Kieran Rose, chairperson of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) told the Irish Examiner.  

From December 25, any Irish and American or Ireland-based couples who marry in New York will now enjoy most of the same legal benefits which heterosexual couples do, including recognition in the tax laws brought in by the Irish Government in July.  

Same-sex couples will also qualify the way opposite sex couples do for immigration purposes, which means that a US citizen in a same-sex marriage to an Irish citizen in New York will now be able to legally live and work in Ireland.

However, same-sex Irish and US couples do not enjoy the same immigration rights in New York that civil marriage partners do in Ireland; this is because same-sex marriage in New York is a state law, not a federal law, and immigration in the US is a federal right.

In fact, same sex marriages between Americans and Irish born partners actually increase the possibility of the Irish born partner's deportation, since a wedding is often taken to indicate an intention to remain within the US.

The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) ,which was signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, prevents any US and foreign born couple from equal protection in United States law. Since it was enacted, DOMA has forced thousands of US and foreign born same-sex bi-national couples to make the heartbreaking choice between love and country.

This year, immigration groups in the US are asking Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to immediately reunite these couples with their families in the United States by granting a temporary 'humanitarian parole' to the foreign spouses, allowing them to enter the United States with that temporary status until a permanent solution can be achieved.

Meanwhile, the Irish Ministerial Order, which already addresses these issues in Ireland, will come into effect on Christmas Day.

Marriage is a legal contract between two consenting partners. You won't get anywhere by lying or being ignorant of this fact, IrelandNorth. You're tired attempt to disavow the reality (and centuries long history) of gay lives and loves make you sound like an silly oaf. If the only sex that qualifies as sex is vaginal penetration by a phallus your partners must have been bored out of their minds. Did your marriage between a man and a woman fail?

Marriage may be a heterosexuals-only sacrament in your church, IrelandNorth & merefalow, but as a social institution, marriage has undergone continual shaping and reshaping throughout the ages. When Christ was walking the earth, many would have objected to your description "a man and a woman" since their marriages were polygamous and quite "normal" according to their religion. Some Mormon spin-off sects still practice polygamy in the US today. Freely contracted marriages based on love? Not until modern times, when young people began to rebel against marriages arranged by their parents, often for selfish motives, marriages that made it clear that children were the property of their parents to be bartered into marriage in exchange for real estate. Marriages of pre-teen girls to men thirty years older than they are? That's still the norm in parts of this world today. Self-immolation of widows on their husbands' funeral pyres, ditto! How strange that you object only to same-sex marriages and not to the many forms of marriage that blatantly ignore the equal human worth of both partners! If you wish to raise a moral objection, inequality is grounds for raising it and the gender of the partners is not.

Same sex marriages are oxymoronic. Marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman. Seems most homosexuals missed basic human biology classes in school. You can't fit a square peg into a round hole, (if you'll pardon the vulgar metaphor). Homosexuality is genital narcissism/masturbatory

it makes a mockery of thousands of years of normal man woman children marriage,which ever way you look at it its not normal.there is one hell of a difference between preventing discrimination against people for being different and allowing children to be adopted into a situation of complete abnormality.i think its sick and unnatural.
