Even though presidential candidate Rick Santorum is Catholic and has made it known that he is a man of faith, surprisingly it is Morman Mitt Romney who appears to have won over the Catholics in Michigan, where the Republican primary will be held on Tuesday.

Catholics there, many of them Irish American, also prefer Romney to the other Catholic in the field, Newt Gingrich, a recent convert.

The disconnect between faith and politics shows that some religious voters are more concerned with other issues, according to NPR.

"I'm a Catholic, and I'm told that one of the responsibilities of the Church is to care for those who are the least among us," Santorum said, "and I believe that, and that's a real responsibility for all of us."

According to Public Policy Polling, Santorum's faith and family man image gives him an advantage with Michigan's Protestants, Evangelicals, and those who consider themselves "very conservative."

However, Romney leads the field with moderates, "somewhat conservative" voters and Catholics, according to the poll.

"There's a lot of complexity there," says John Green, a political science professor at the University of Akron. "Religion and politics often line up, but they don't always correlate perfectly."

"There is ... what we might call the orthodoxy of religious beliefs, and someone like Sen. Santorum is a very orthodox Catholic in terms of religion. He holds very closely to the traditional teachings of the Church," he says.

"Some Catholic conservatives, or liberals for that matter, may be turned off by a fellow parishioner or a Catholic candidate who is self-consciously a traditionalist," he says.

Green says that until the '60s, Catholics tended to vote as a group for Democrats. But as Catholics — many of whom were recent immigrants — began to assimilate and become more accepted, their views on politics began to splinter.

Katie Goebel, whose father runs a Lenten Friday night fish fry in Walled Lake, Mich, says that she hasn't made up her mind who to vote for, but her faith plays a role.

"I will admit it does play a big role on issues like on contraception, abortion, things like that. But other things, like marriage and all that, I'm sort of up in the air," she says. "You know, people more [in] my generation, we're seeing things like gay marriage and stuff like that as OK."

Like ALL politicians the 1st rule is you need to be a crook, 2nd is you need to lie really good and make it sound believable and 3rd you need to be a fence walker so you can convince enough voters that you are the better of Two evils.
Romney is from Michigan and Massachusetts. Next he will be from Hawaii and then Kenya. What is the difference what state he is from, he will be just another obummer.
Rick Santorum, Imam of the Catholic Taliban ! Separation of Church and State. See Roger Williams and Thomas Jefferson. Anything less is tyranny.
The people of Michigan had best be careful who they vote for. Romney is just a WHITE obama. They would do better by voting for Santorum.
Irish Spring 444 - any chance of you getting a job on this rag? You've written the best article I've probably ever read in it! Rick Santorum is the only choice for a faithful Catholic.
Anyone that votews for these two zionist controlled puppets of the elite, really needs their heads examined, they are not for the people whatsoever, most catholics/people would vote RON PAUL,THATS IF THE MEDIA WAS NOT DOING SUCH A GOOD JOB OF BLACKLISTING HIM,HE IS THE ONLY REAL PERSON IN THE RACE WITH MORALS
Santorum is a big prude. Romney, can't say it publicly but he will allow men to have several wives. So he's the guy to vote for. But if either get the nomination, you should vote for him as the white guy. Obama hates white people.
It's pretty clear why religion should have NO place in the US government- would you want any of these people having any control of your life? Religious organizations in the US should recieve no government support, and NO tax exemption, if you believe in the US constitution.
The GOP winner is irrelevant as Obama will serve four more years. The religious right have hijacked the once great republican party
Katie is right on. Most American Catholics have abandoned the archaic/cuckoo rules on contraception, gay marriage etc. The pews are empty and just because catholics are signed up, doesn't mean they will follow the Church and Santorum over the cliff. Catholics are no longer peasants of the middle ages, they read, write and think. Oh, and by the way, the scandals in the Church heven't helped either.
Cal Sham..... the Church is generally against the death penalty, but not always. Look it up in THE CATHOLIC CATECHISM..... The Church approves of the death penalty only when the criminal is a someone who is trying to destroy a country via revolution and mass murder: in effect, revolutioanry type commies. I would agree.
Both Catholics in the race are "cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose what "traditional" beliefs they will accept - They certainly don't agree with Catholic teaching on the poor, the death penalty, the environment to mention a few -
Well, I don't know of any other Catholics that support Romney. As far as Newt is concerned, I didn't like him 20 years ago and I don't like him now. As for Santorum.....the only reason he keeps talking about social issues is because that is what the DNC owned media want him to talk about.
Obviously a journalist out of touch with US Catholics. That Sen. Santorum is conception-to-natural-death prolifer Catholic adds to his support from Catholics. It is a broad interfaith base of all business size, defence, health and working voters whose families would've voted for Pres. John F. Kennedy and are now fed up with big government trying to madate everything from the White House.
I am beginning to think that Santorum would be the best GOP nomination for America.
If Romney wins you will get a nasty but essentially meaningless debate in the fall between two centrists.
The basic Regan/Clinton/Bush/Obama Washington consensus that has governed in essentially the same way for the past 30 years will simply continue regardless of who wins the Presidency.
On the other hand if Santorum is the GOP candidate you are likely to get a more clarifying debate in the Fall which will help resolve just where the majority of Americans stand in regard to the social issues that have plagued American politics.
Perhaps it is time to stop prevaricating about the 'culture war' and get to the heart of the issues that appear to divide the US.
I think this would be of benefit to Catholics of all political persuasions.
