As Michael D. Higgins prepares to take his position as the ninth President of Ireland it seems that his inauguration could be blessed with a Hollywood endorsement from their best known president, Martin Sheen from the ‘West Wing.’

Sheen has been a huge fan of the Galway politician and has worked with him on human rights issues.

Earlier this year, as the Irish presidential campaign began, a 5,000-strong Facebook group was started in an attempt to prompt Sheen to throw his own hat into the ring. Despite being best known in recent years for his role in “The West Wing,” as U.S. President Jed Bartlett, Sheen assured the Irish people that he would not be suited to the role.

He did, however, give a warm endorsement of his “friend” Higgins.

The Evening Echo reported, back in September, that “Sheen has publicly backed Labour’s presidential candidate for the Aras.

“He said “There is, however, one candidate that I most heartily support – my dear friend Michael Higgins.

“A vote for Michael is a real vote for Ireland."

Sheen spent time studying at the National University of Ireland Galway. During that time he lived in Galway and became firm friends with Ireland’s future president.

The Hollywood actor based himself in Barna, Galway and studied English Literature, Philosophy, and Oceanography.

On Friday evening it became apparent after the first count that Michael D Higgins had won the position of the ninth President of Ireland. The Galway man received 701,000, from a possible 1.77 million, votes.

Since last weekend Higgins just from behind by 15 points as controversy marred his main rival Sean Gallagher’s campaign.

Higgins has said that his term in office would be about inclusion, ideas and transformation.

He said, "I feel a little overwhelmed. I'm very, very happy. It is something I prepared for, something I thought about for a long while. I hope it will be a presidency that will enable everybody to be part of and proud of."

He will be inaugurated on Armistice Day, November 11 - the day after current President Mary McAleese leaves office  -- and Martin Sheen, the Hollywood president may be at his side.

Well done mr Higgins, and well done mr Mcguinness. Very interesting result.
"Martin Sheen, the Hollywood president may be at his side." Maybe. Is this journalism?
It appears that those who have an understanding of Ireland and in this particular case the presidency of Ireland are not commenting. A scan of the views below make me glad most if not all of them didn't have a vote in this election. Michael D. will be a President like no other. Not one of the other six candidates would disagree and lets all wish the man "go n-eirigh an bothar a Meehal!"
Yeah! Capitalism is great. The Irish people have the honor of paying for the losses of the bondholders. The quality of a society is how you treat the weakest members of that society.I have no problem paying taxes to help my less fortunate brothers and sisters. But I do have a problem paying taxes to pay for rich peoples gambling debts.Pure Capitalism is just the other side of the coin to pure Communism. They both don't work. How do I know? Simple!! Most of the world has a Capitalistic system and most people of the world are dirt poor.Slightly left of center is a good way to be.The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Now that is so wonderful. A super Liberal of the US going to the inaugration of another super liberal. So tell me, why does it matter one bit a'tal? Maybe Martin Sheen will be willing to give a lot of money to the Irish now to help bail them out of the socialist society. Does anyone understand there is only one way to pay for socialism? On the backs of those who are working - so that the taxes can make them the working poor! My poor Irish dad would turn over in his grave if his casket were bigger on the inside at all this you pay for me socialism stuff.
Michael D. Higgins does't just read poetry. He has been a voice for the marginalised in Irish Society for decades and is not afraid to speak his mind on many thorny subjects. People may not always agree with him but he is very much admired and loved in Ireland and abroad. There have even been songs written about him. He understands the Irish Constitution like nobody else does and the President of Ireland does not just sing on the dotted line and can seek the advise of the Council of State and the Supreme Court. WATCH HIGGINS GO.!!!!!!
How good for Ireland, your new President can read poetery to all of the out of work masses.
Martin Sheen, Mr. super liberal himself.
WOW! I wonder, is Michael D. Higgins worthy of such an honor?
Peggy P and OleSarge, thanks for highlighting your ignorance as well as your obvious allegiance to Republicanism. The role of Irish president is that of a figurehead, with no real power or say in politics. They are there to lead by example, project an image that can be respected at home and abroad and to sign on the dotted line in situations where it is asked of them. Nothing more. The fact that you would equate Sheens friendship and backing of Higgins as some sort of doomsday knell for Ireland is evidence enough that you shouldnt even be discussing these matters. Go back to eulogizing that shaved ape George Bush Jr.
Sorry about typeo. Ment to write Ole sarge beat me to it.
OleSarge meet me to it. He should stick to acting. I don't know too much about Irish politics but do know if Higgins endorced by Sheen Ireland will soon have there own Obama. Ireland has enough financial problems and she can now look foward to more, lots more.
In fairness, what might be considered "far left socialist political" in the USA might be perfectly accectable middle ground in Ireland. Given the state of the country, we need all the good socalism we can get.
Ireland is in trouble now! Beware of any politician Martin Sheen endorses. Sheen a great actor is also a far left socialist political activist. Don't confuse the roles he has played with the political views he holds.
