Irish experts are trying to cut Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions by curbing flatulence and belching in cows.

The Department of the Environment has stated that Ireland has one of the highest levels of greenhouse gas emissions per head in Europe. There are 6.6 million cattle and 4.6 million sheep in the country.

“The long term goal is to identify animals that produce lower levels of methane,” said Richard Dewhurst, head of and animal research and bioscience department while speaking to the Irish Sunday Times.

He believes Ireland’s carbon footprint can be greatly reduced by a controlled diet for cattle that includes concentrate feed as well as silage.

A control test of two different groups of animals discovered that the silage-only diet led to far more methane gas emission than a mixture of both diets.

“Animals fed on a  silage diet produced twice as much methane as those who were fed on a silage and cereal concentrate diet,” said Dewhurst.

However, he pointed out that the concentrate diet was far mor expensive than silage. He said the option was under active review to offer financial subsidies to feed the cows the concentrate diet.

Ireland hasn't heard of beano? With all the problems Ireland faces and you are worried about cow farts.
With all this stuff polluting the air and the solid and liquid waste spoiling the rivers and water tables,it's no wonder Ireland is a sparsely populated green desert... ~ ~ ~ I know a farmer who hooks his cows up to his tractor at night. "Shur 'tis not great. but it gets me as far as the shops for a pint of milk in the mornings.
ellenfromcork on Jun 20, 2011, 07:36 PM EDT "Horse meat and swans" what has that got to do w/cow flatulence?!?" Ellen, if you are looking for logic or even common sense from that particular poster sirpeter I am afraid flatulence is all you'll get.
Now you have to factor in the reduction in sun spot activity and the possibility of another Maunder Minimum which refers to a period from about 1645 to 1715 dubbed the 'Little Ice Age". Maybe all that greenhouse gas might come in handy yet.
So the great CO2 scam continues unabated in Ireland....what will you blame the next Ice Age on? Just bad science and political fostering of a way to make money on stupid folks.
Now if only they could curb it in Irish pubs.
"Horse meat and swans" what has that got to do w/cow flatulence?!? Horse meat is actually quite good and low in cholesterol.
In a nut shell this is all BULL S---
Now this would make an exciting ad for Irish tourism.
Georgie boy. It's not me it's the millions of immigrants. All that horse meat and swans.
Well, in the world, it is by far termites that contribute the largest amount of methane. Ireland is realtively termite free. I can't believe that an Irish cow is any more devastating than a Swiss cow. Where to look? I know - it's the little people eating far too much cabbage!
Is it only the cows in Ireland doing all the belching and farting?
A "War on Flatulence" Who will be the Field Marshall..Can't wait to see the logo..
These cows should be given a stern warning, and if they persist in their gaseous ways, the should also be given a stiff fine.. How did Obama get tied in with Irish cows ? :-)
Oh!, This is too easy, Mickey. Make them stop eating the grass...
