What would be the point of putting him on the sexual offenders' register if he receives a life sentence? It's absurd. So would a life sentence be absurd, and he won't receive one. TREALACH: Humphries is not a paedophile. The girl was 14. OHRIGHTYEAH: Humphries is more certainly not "one of the most gifted writers in Ireland". He is a very ordinary journalist, with prose to match. DR TRELAWNEY: The story has not vanished from the Sunday World. At time of writing it is here: http://www.sundayworld.com/columnists/index.php

I am seriously upset that Humphries, one of the most gifted writers in Ireland, could be the person behind this awful shameful despicable stuff. I hope he gets jailed.
On a separate issue, I don't think it's right that he was named, either on here or by the Sunday World. It's usual in trials of this nature in Ireland that the perpetrator is not named in order to protect the identity of the young victim, unless that victim and her parents waive the right to anonymity. By naming him like this, the poor girl at the centre of it all, must now be dealing with the extra hassle of the media spotlight.

What a shame. Tom Humphries was one of the very best sports journalists in Ireland. I can never look at his work in the same way again.

According to the law (Irish) there will be the appropriate sentence, whatever it might be, but to suggest, or indeed wish, that he receives a life sentence for the relationship with the young girl, in comparison with other more serious crimes is inappropriate and rather extreme.

Humphries has apparently gotten caught up in the idea that as a "big star" in the sports media, he can do whatever the hell he wants! I hope he goes to jail for life! He's a pig and that silly girl will suffer the consequences for the rest of her life.

The Irish public will turn him into a "victim" and call for the stoning of the 14-year old for seducing him.
That's the way things work in this island asylum!

This story has vanished from every website on the planet -- including the Sunday World's -- for, I can only assume, legal reasons. Could you please provide a link substantiating it?

That is one contest the R.C. Church wins hands down.

One can only wonder how many more paedophiles are lurking in the offices of the Media. Will the media expose them with the same energy and effort as they did with the Catholic Church? I won't be holding my breath on this one.
