Speaking at a conference organized by  youth organization Foróige, Ireland’s President, Michael D Higgins, has slammed what he described as “the appalling, destructive reality of homophobia”.

He described suicide resulting from racism and homophobia as an appalling blight on a society.

"The idea that any young person would be driven not just to lower self-esteem, exclusion, isolation, loneliness but self destruction itself is an appalling blight on a society," he said.

"We have to ask about how racism gets going, how homophobia does its destructive work, how isolation tears at a person's wanting to exist, how important every person is. These are important issues, they are not merely emotional issues."

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and boy band musician, Westlife star, and Foróige Alumnus, Kian Egan also spoke at the at the 42nd Annual Foróige Leaders' Conference in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin.

Foróige is Ireland's largest youth organization. It works with almost 57,000 young people and 5,125 adult volunteers annually under 534 youth clubs.

@@@bogsidebunny | Mar 28, 2012, 01:19 AM EDT Higgans (powerless president) is a confirmed Socialist who HATES the United States, but embraces a deviant, same sex-culture. Sadly, he truly typifies the Genneral feeling of the Irish people. PS: STEVENSTAR, stop with the shouting already!>>>>>>>>>>> MATE I WILL TYPE IN CAPITALS IF I WISH.. IM IRISH I LIVE IN IRELAND AND WAS BORN HERE.. IF YOUR CULTURE SAYS TYPING IN CAPITALS IS SHOUTING WELL THAT DONT APPLY OVER HERE IN IRELAND OR EUROPE... SO WHY DONT YOU RUN OFF AND GER YOURSELF ANOTHER BIG MAC AND LARGE FRIES AND CHILL OUT |!! haha!
stevenstar they cannot treat American blacks as normal especially if you wear a hoody.
bogsidebunny I'm not the best speller in the camp,at least make an attempt.
Good Man Michael - Doing us proud, speaking up for the marginalised. Growing up gay in many parts of Ireland, even in 2012 post-catholic Ireland, can't be easy. The remnants of narrow-minded religiosity are easy to see, just like some of the commenters on this page.
@IrelandNorth, "man," meaning male human being, is "vir" in Latin, not "homo," which means "human being" but often translates badly as "man" in the sexist language of English (for example, in RC liturgy, in which Christ came to save "us men," not human beings--I am not a "man"). But there is also the ancient Greek adjective ὁμός "homos," meaning "the same," and this word is the first root of the English word "homosexual." Like the word "sociology," this word has mixed Latin and Greek etymology. Unfortunately for your political position, there is no indication in scripture that Jesus agreed with you. It would do you no harm to look into the Greek language and civilization, to broaden your view of human nature somewhat.
More misguided secularist bible thumping from the smoked-salmon socialist in the Park. "Homophobia" is fear of men -NOT hatred of homosexuals. When will retired academics ever learn? More dogma from the hierarchy of the Church of Political Correctness, which has replaced the Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church in Ireland. Homosexualilty IS an abomination!
Bogsidebunny: Keen up on the State Side Bourgeois Proletarian Rhetoric ? Higgins is as Far from the starry plough as Derry is from London @!
Drawing the Line between Church and State; Like the One between Revolutionary Republic, and Bourgeois proletarian Democracy @?

@@@@Seanmor | Mar 27, 2012, 05:38 PM EDT The "don't ask, don't tell" plan for homosexuals in the Irish state may work as well as it did in the U.S. military. Politicians in all of Ireland are correct in treating homosexuals fairly, but no one should disparage the santtity of natural marriage.>>>>>>UNFORTUNATLEY THE DONT ASK THE DONT TELL ATTITUDE IS NOT OVER HERE THATS MORE OF AN AMERICAN ATTITUDE TO GAY PEOPLE ... AMERICANS HAVE THIS DREAMY HOLLYWOOD IMAGE OF IRELAND AND BELIEVE ME ITS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO WHAT YOU BELIEVE OR THINK... WE ARE A VERY PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY AND NOT AT ALL NARROW MINDED WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS LIKE GAY MARRIAGE AND BEEN RELAXED TOWARDS GAY PEOPLE ... UNFORTUNATELY IN AMERICA THINGS ARE WAY DIFFERNT .. SO REALLY AMERICAN OPINIONS DONT REALLY GEL WITH US OVER HERE WHERE BEEN GAY IS ACCEPTED AND NOT TO BE A HIDDEN SECRET OR BE ASHAMED OF ... MAYBE ONE DAY GAY PEOPLE IN AMERICA WILL BE TREATED AS NORMAL CITIZENS AS THEY ARE OVER HERE ... I WISH YOU LUCK WITH THAT ...
Bythebay and phlutiephan have no reason to post on this site other than to ridicule anything Irish they get a great thrill in their pants doing so poor souls

Bythebay, as Steve said, we have an aging population and pretty soon, over 50% of our population will be of pension age. As for single mothers, many women stay unmarried because they dont want to marry or dont believe in marriage. many of my friends with kids arent married because its not something they feel they need to do and they are right. Dont tar all women who arent married with the 'single mother on welfare brush'. All of my friends who are mothers and who arent married have careers. Not one of them is one welfare.
Adam and Eve never married. They had two sons. One killed the other. Who was left to have sex with? If the Bible was the foundation of society we'd all be unmarried and practicing incest.
President Higgins has sent an important message. I'm glad to see him carrying on in the spirit of his predecessors in the Presidency of Ireland. @Bythebay, you might do some research to find out why Ireland's number of single-parent families is so high (it's also high in the US). I can assure you of this much: Women do not raise children alone because they expect to benefit financially from being single parents!
