The investigation into the mystery of four female bodies found in burlap bags near a picturesque Long Island beach earlier this month is being headed by an Irishman who says that the killings could be the work of a serial killer.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, a native of Co. Laois and the top cop in Suffolk since 2004, told the Irish Voice on Tuesday that he and other experts working on the shocking case that has gained national attention haven’t yet ruled out that the women, all of whom remain unidentified, were slain by the same person.

“We just don’t know,” Dormer said.  “I was asked that question last week and I said it could be a serial killer. The experts are saying that it looks like a serial killer, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Dormer says his police department, the 12th largest in the U.S. with more than 2,500 officers, is receiving leads and tips from the public about the case “literally by the minute,” and every one of them is being followed up.

“Many are not useful, but others we’re not so sure of yet,” he said.

The first of the bodies was discovered near Gilgo-Oak Beach, just off the Atlantic, on Saturday, December 11 during a police search for a missing female, Shannan Gilbert, a prostitute who disappeared in May after a pre-arranged encounter with a client resident in Suffolk.

Three days later, police and trained dogs following up on that discovery came across a further grim finding nearby, three more bodies that fueled fears of a serial killer on the loose.

Dormer estimates that the remains “at first guess could be two years old.  It’s very hard to tell right now.  It’s a tough environment where they were found right off the beach.”

Dormer has complete faith that his department, aided by other agencies and the FBI, will eventually crack the mystery of who the victims are, and who or whom is responsible for their deaths.

“This is what our police force is ready for.  You train for cases like this, but of course you hope they never happen,” Dormer said.

“We certainly have the expertise to bring it to a successful conclusion.”

Dormer was nominated by Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy to serve as commissioner, which is a civilian appointment, but he’s hardly a stranger to police work.

A native of Newtown Crettyard, Co. Louth, Dormer emigrated to New York in 1958 and immersed himself in the local Gaelic football scene in the Bronx before pursuing his life-long goal to be a detective.

In 1963 he took the Suffolk County police exam and finished an impressive 19th out of more than 1,000 applicants. His dream career was poised to begin, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Hey Rich, could you possibly come up with a better name. "Buster1st" lol....Doesn't matter what you write here. The National Media now know what everyone already knew.....You are clueless!
It's about time we had a leader with balls. Thank God there is someone to stand up to the corrupt police unions. Union so corrupt it makes Al Capone look like a ranking alter boy. That said kudos to Commissioner Dormer and the County Executive for standing up against evil. Now he needs to pull the shields of all those on the force who are bashing him here... Think about it guys :o)
The remarks about Mr.Dormer, except for one, appear to be a concerted effort malign the man. Maybe a conspiracy.
You must be kidding me. This man, and I use the term loosely is the biggest disgrace to the men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department. He has not rode along with any of the members until recently and after doing so he had that member promoted to an elite COPE unit even though her stats were the worst in the squad, passing over officers with better stats and more years of service. Dormer has never been to a Roll Call, because, the Department does not Have a Roll Call. Dormer as he is called, because the title Commissioner does not fit him, he should be referred to as "Puppet" seems to have stolen a page from Commissioner Guido's management thesis and signed his name to it. Commissioner Guido, who had the respect of the men and women of the Department managed the Department within his Budget, but cared about his Rank and File and cared about the safety of the officers in the street. Dormer could care less about that. He only cares about the bottom line and doing what his boss Mr. Levy tells him to do. If an Officer gets hurt, so be it. Crime is on the rise and there are less officers and Detectives to investigate these crimes and all Dormer does is eliminate commands and lie to the public. The man is a disgrace to the Law Enforcement community. I guess he felt he could give this interview to this little known paper and no one would find out about it, well Rich, someone has to tell the truth. Why not tell them about how you have promoted people to the Rank of Detective who have never made a Felony arrest, or never left the inside of Headquarters, because they are your friend. How about having three Detective squads investigating a simple Assault on your son, while you let homicide's sit idle in the street because it may incur overtime. You are a disgrace to every cop in the Department. This entire article is a complete lie!
Ha...nevermind that he's Irish. He's a disgrace to every cop with an Irish heritage. What a joke. His idea is to dismantle the dept command by command! No wonder everyone over 20 years is looking at retirement. Dormer the Performer...sounds like a circus act, with little Stevie Levy leading the commish by a nose ring!
Dormer? A pure and simple joke. Little Stevie? I think you have lost sight of something; You work for US! The taxpayers. The majority voted for you. Consider that the next time you eliminate a vital command in the name of flexing you little muscles developed in your mothers basement.
Yeah he is the worst. I can see someone being fiscal responsible but to disregard safety and never compliment a police officer is unnreal. I think he should spen 8 hours with a cop. Shame he lied.
Dormer is the worst commissioner in the history of the Suffolk County Police Department. Under his administration the only things that have increased are nepotism and crime.
Will go down as the worst commissioner SCPD has ever had! Nuff said.
This man is a joke. Period. End of story.
I think the commissioner is way out of touch. He speaks with forked tongue. Thinks he is in the 70's when policing is in the 21st Century. And by the way he bows to the CE Levy. Who is his boss..Instead of fighting the war against crime and demanding the best for his cops!!! Shame on him
I just want crime down. It's so common to wake up in the morning and see police tape blocking off the street. I wish this county had a police officer in charge. I see levy's servant.
Commisioner Dormer has NEVER attented a role call because the SCPD does not have them. We have monthly inspections and he has NEVER come to one of those either. He has NEVER riden in a RMP as commisioner. He is by far the worst commisioner we have ever had. He does not stand by his people. Dormer lies, distorts and offers phony statistical analysis to the Public Safetey Committee of the Suffolk Leg. He needs to go ASAP!!
The 12th largest sept in the US is going to be dismantled by this guy. He hasn't done one thing to help the street cops perform better. I wouldn't be surprised if another agency found this killer since he gutted the training and expertise from cops.
Regarding the wrong-way drunk drivers, the Commissioner says, “I just don’t have an answer as to why it’s happening so much lately,” Dormer said. “I can’t explain." Perhaps allowing the dismantling of the Highway Patrol on the orders of his boss, the County Executive Mr. Levy, resulting in the removal of highly dedicated, trained, and seasoned Highway Patrol officers from the roads has something to do with this rising problem. Many of these officers had more than 15 years experience in anti-DWI patrol and served as the Department's experts and trainers, as well as technicians who gathered DWI evidence. All of the Chiefs and brass who stood up to the gutting of the Department have gradually been forced to retire, and we are now led by a yes-man, with yes-men to do his bidding. There is no respect for this man amongst the rank-and-file who put their lives on the line on the street each and every day an night. Mr. Dormer has become an embarrassment to a once-proud Department. I am proud of my Irish heritage, and of the contribution of the Irish to law enforcement in the United States. I ask the Commissioner to consider this: When you go home at night, before you lay your badge on the dresser, ask yourself, "Today, did I polish this badge or tarnish it?"
