Mari Steed: claims that she was used as a drugs guinea pig while housed in a home for single mothers run by Catholic orders

An Irish woman now living in Philadelphia is suing a major drug company and a Catholic order claiming she was used as a guinea pig in a drug experiment while a baby in Ireland in 1960 and 1961.

She claims  that a major U.S, drug company GlaxoSmithKline used Irish babies in homes for single mothers run by Catholic orders to experiment with a four in one shot against childhood diseases. The shots were later found to be less effective than the standard treatment.

Mari Steed, (50), born to an umarried mother, was given up for adoption to a couple in the US shortly afterwards. She says she and others were used a guinea pigs for a vaccine trial.

"The trials involved incredibly poor judgment on the part of all involved. We were basically used as human guinea pigs,"  Steed told the Irish Independent.

"There are at least four of us who are aware we were part of the trials, but there are probably more out there who don't know what happened to them."

She was given the vaccine on at least four times at the Sacred Heart Convent, Bessborough, in Cork, also known as the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home.

She realized she had been a guinea pig after she discovered her medical records when tracking down her mother Josephine in the 1990s.

Josephine, her mother has confirmed no permission was sought for the trial. “They didn't ask me for my permission to give her that shot,” she said.

Steed is filing a class action suit in the US courts against the multinational drugs giant responsible for the medical tests but is also suing the Catholic convent who allowed them, an Irish Independent investigation reveals.

Ms Steed and three others who were also subjected to the trials are looking to separately sue the Catholic religious order that they claim facilitated the experiments in the early 1960s. They are seeking details on whether they were paid for allowing the babies to be used.

Steed was involved in the first trial, which happened between December 1960 and November 1961 on 58 children in five different children's homes.

These were  St Patrick's Mother and Baby Home, Dublin; the Bessborough Mother and Baby home in Cork; and St Peter's Mother and Baby Home, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath. Children from St Clare's Baby Home in Stamullen, Co Meath, and the Good Shepherd Mother and Baby Home in Dunboyne, Co Meath.

The trial sought to find out what would happen if four vaccines for diphtheria (a life-threatening disorder caused by a highly contagious bacterial infection), pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and polio were combined in one overall injection, known as the four-in-one shot.

The whole Adoption scene is disgraceful and seems to emerge out of the sick dysfunctional Catholic Church Syndrome...the Secrecy, The Shame, The covert nature of so called "good people", the Betrayal and the condemnation of unmarried women is a National tragedy, human beings being judged as sinners for having babies out of wedlock is a cruelty this country excels in...a shadow that still looms
I will also repeat what SkyLoom posted: if you want to ask me personally why I'm upset about an unethical vaccine trial, the complete pack of lies I've been handed by the Sacred Heart Adoption Society and the Irish State, or my background, feel free to e-mail me at mari_tee@yahoo.com. I'm sure there are many 'Plastic Paddies' here who parade their 'Oirishness' around every Paddy's Day but have no clue about Ireland's baby-selling business between the 1940s and 1960s, much less what was medically done to those children. And that's not even counting those abused in industrial schools and other residential institutions, or Magdalene laundry suvivors (who have yet to receive any apology or restorative justice).
@Kevin325: Does it matter whether I've had any negative side effects? The point of the action is to seek answers, not financial gain. And that this trials were done in the most unethical fashion possible: on a group of children for whom you have NO medical history/background, NO parental consent (despite that we were still legally under out mother's care, as well as physically under it) and for whom you will have NO follow-up opportunities, so the vast majority of us were adopted out to the U.S.
@motheroffive: your comment is so beyond offensive to me (as the subject of the trials and this article), it beggars belief. We, as children being (coercively) placed for adoption, were among the most vulnerable of Ireland's citizens. The Irish constitution hold's (or alleges to) children's rights and sacred; so why were they not in this instance? Why not conduct the trials on local children, for whom you had complete maternal and paternal medical background, ability to follow up, and most importantly, PARENTAL CONSENT? And for your edification, I am not asking for anything financially...I want answers as to why the State (who regulated and inspected mother-and-baby homes) and a licensed, registered adoption society allowed this to happen, not to mention Burroughs Wellcome/Glaxo SmithKline. Is that answer enough for YOU? Or is it okay by you that the most vulnerable members of a society that routinely abused women and children are used in vaccine trials, rather than willing volunteers from the population. I truly feel sorry for your five children, madam. They've a callous monster for a mother.
It doesn't matter whether or not she had any side effects from the vaccine. It was an untested vaccine cocktail, and to administer it without parental consent is against the law. Both the Church and Drug manufacturer violated ethical and legal standards.
Sounds like a pretty legitimate story - I'd say she has a pretty good case, and shame on the Catholic Church and GlaxoSmithCline. Whatever their motivation and rationale, they certainly knew better and weren't above reproach.
Motheroffive, how would you feel if someone gave one of yours an injection without informing you... and you were close by to ask?

It's not like they were guinea pigs for an untested, new type of vaccine for heaven's sake! They would have received the vaccines anyway. The only difference is that they were given all at once instead of individually. What was the harm? what were the undesired side effects that she was affected with? Gee! What the heck is the big deal? wonder how much she is asking for.

you thinks that's something, you should have been there for the LSD disguised as vitamins. So what do you think is really in Viagra? political realignment? spouse abuse?...we will wait to ask the next generation of puppets!
NO!!!!!!
Does she have any ailments that were caused by the injections?
Now 2010 children world wide are guinea pigs for untested vaccines. It is good that this truth is brought to light proving once again the ancient sacred texts which deem women and children cattle.
Gee, what is the big deal. I took the dpt (diphteria, pertussis tetnus) polio was separate. This was standard in the 50's and early 60's. From the picture shown, she doesn't look like she was harmed.
