Ireland, as the poster boy for austerity policies in Europe, is a complete failure, says Paul Krugman, New York Times columnist and Nobel Economics prize winner.

Writing after austerity candidates had lost in elections in France and Greece, Krugman stated “Consider the case of Ireland, which has been a good soldier in this crisis, imposing ever-harsher austerity in an attempt to win back the favor of the bond markets. According to the prevailing orthodoxy, this should work. In fact, the will to believe is so strong that members of Europe’s policy elite keep proclaiming that Irish austerity has indeed worked, that the Irish economy has begun to recover.

"But it hasn’t. And although you’d never know it from much of the press coverage, Irish borrowing costs remain much higher than those of Spain or Italy, let alone Germany. “

Krugman says the European election results shows that voters are wiser than the leaders who had insisted on austerity as the only way out.

Iceland, not Ireland, points the way forward Krugman writes.

“As a counterpoint to Ireland’s sad story, consider the case of Iceland, which was ground zero for the financial crisis but was able to respond by devaluing its currency, the krona (and also had the courage to let its banks fail and default on their debts). Sure enough, Iceland is experiencing the recovery Ireland was supposed to have, but hasn’t.”

Krugman says breaking up the Euro zone would be highly disruptive but that “Europe’s crisis countries might be able to emulate Germany’s success if they were experiencing a bit of an inflationary boom.”

“It’s an argument for much more expansionary policies elsewhere, and in particular for the European Central Bank to drop its obsession with inflation and focus on growth.” Krugman concludes.

Problem is folks WHO CAN WE TRUST they`re all a shower of theiving Bast..ds.
btb and ss you have nothing to worry about, if your take over of the western country you now occupy is successful, you can default with pride.
The United States has a deficit of $15 trillion and rising, 8.3 million people in the US go hungry every day. The US President and Congress can't even agree a plan of action to tackle ongoing budget problems. Paul Krugmann's time would be better spent advising those in his own country how to get out of the cragmire they're in. Ireland is well in hand.
I THINK HE SHOULD BE MORE FOCUSED ON THE TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF $$$$ AMERICANS ARE IN DEBT AND FORGET ABOUT US OVER HERE IN IRELAND ....AS ITS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THEY ARE IN DEBT TO.
Don't worry be happy,do doot do do ado do ado do adooo, be happy, Don't worry, be happy,do doot do do ado do ado adoodie do doodiedo adoodie do.
this guy's face looks way too happy and carefree (and just plain goofy) for the subject of his comments, don'tcha think?
Paul Krugman is a complete imbecile, this is the same guy that said Obama should hire people to dig holes and then hire other people to fill them up. It would be good for the economy. He also said on National TV that if we were to be invaded by aliens it would be good for the economy. The elections in France and Greece only tell us there are more voters on the dole than not on the dole. Don't be fooled into thinking that you can get through this crisis with no pain. The only question is do you want some now or a lot later. To think that Obama is actually taking advice from this guy is scary. Please do not try to pawn off this charlatan as someone with real credentials.
Krugman gets a Nobel and so does obama, tells you how much they are really worth...Krugman is a financial nut who will use the standard socialist talking point..."We just didn't spend enough". Of other peoples money of course
After a socialist anti-austerity Prime Minister is democratically elected by the French Republic, austericist German Chancellor Frau Merkel duly announces it won't make any difference for the European Union. So much for Eurocracy. They who gained during the Celtic Tiger aren't the ones being austericised. The 'we' who over spent during the boom aren't the same 'we' who are being penalised. KRUGMANN FOR IMF! Problem is, the Irish electorate will be sleep-walked into euro-fiscalisation by duplicituos politicos and their media mouthpieces. THANK HEAVENS FOR IC!
Klugman is a true socialist. No one like austerity but the alternative is spending into oblivion. A Country can not survive that spends above it's means just as a family could not. It would lead to bankruptcy and ultimately poverty. When more people are living on the dole than there are those working and paying into the system it should be obvious that it is time for austerity if one wishes to survive.
Ireland does not have austerity........Ireland has a corrupt judicial system that allows the systematic fraud of Social Welfare Recipients and those employed in law just turn up and collect the salary.
Krugman's comments make no difference in Ireland or to Ireland. Buzz off, mate.
Many people are now becoming fully aware that austerity was applied to only the 'little people' while the swells who gambled us all into financial perdition skated away unhurt.
It has been clear for some time that Iceland has done a better job of dealing with a similar, but much worse situation than Ireland.

Paul's right on this one.
I THINK MR PAUL KNOW IT ALL , SHOULD FORGET ABOUT WHAT WE DO OVER HERE IN IRELAND AND FOCUS ON AMERICAN DEBT WHICH NOW RUNS IN TO TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ALOT MORE DEBT THE WE HAVE OVER HERE IN IRELAND ..
