One year after she was struck by a baseball bat in a robbery in Chicago, Armagh, Northern Ireland woman Natasha McShane has made very little progress from her brain injury.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that Natasha’s father, Liam, now second guesses the decision to bring Natasha back to Ireland as she “she had setbacks from Day One....If this happened again,” Liam said, “we wouldn’t go home.”

On April 23rd last year, Natasha, a 23-year-old exchange student in Chicago was attacked outside a bar in the Bucktown section.

Currently, Heriberto Viramontes, 32, and Marcy Cruz, 26, are awaiting trial in the attack on Natasha and a friend who was less seriously injured. The motive was robbery say police.

Prosecutors allege Cruz pointed out the women to Viramontes, who then attacked them. Natasha, 4ft 9” and only 100 pounds  was severely beaten.

There was massive coverage of the case at the time and over $500,000 was raised for Natasha’s treatment.

Now after making progress while under treatment in Chicago she has regressed since returning to Ireland says her father.

She is incapable of feeding or caring for herself despite rapid early progress towards recovery when she was being treated in Chicago. She returned to Ireland in July and has since struggled with infections, seizures and brain shunts. Several days after a bone graft in her skull an infection occurred.

Liam says  “She never really got back to where she was prior to the operation.”

“She wasn’t getting any physio [physical therapy] those weeks because she wasn’t fit,” he said.
Then seizures began to occur and liquid accumulated in her brain.

“She was getting worse and worse and worse, and then they put the right leg in a fiberglass cast. She had no power in that leg.”

It has been downhill since.

When we left America she could walk. Not great,” he said, but she could do so with the help of therapists. Today, “She’s lost all that.

“Before we came home, she had good power in her left arm.”

Now Liam says she can’t write or use a spoon.

“Everybody wants Natasha to get better. I’m not blaming anyone,” McShane said.

But he said the US system of treating his daughter was far superior.

The McShanes say they found it very hard that they were not allowed to sleep in the room with their daughter in hospital like in Chicago. “She opened her eyes and looked over, and one of us was there all the time,” he said. That hasn’t been the case in Northern Ireland.

Does  their daughter know  know Sheila, her mother or Liam?

“Yeah, but sometimes, I don’t know,” he told the Sun Times.

Her friends often to visit. “We were talking to Natasha,” they’ll say.

“But they’re not talking to Natasha,” McShane said. “Natasha’s not talking to them.” And he also had a message for the people of Chicago.

“Thank them very much for all they [have] done, and for all the prayers and all the things that people gave us, and keep praying,” he said.

“She needs our prayers to get her out of it.”

My daughter lives in Chicago and works not far from where Natasha McShane was attacked. I'm painfully aware that she could be the next one clubbed with a bat for her purse and cell phone. Yes, Chicago should pay every cent for America's finest medical care for Natasha. If the Chicago politicians contributed just 1% of their annual graft toward such a fund, all the bills could be paid. Americans are furious about the fact that Viramontes had a long felony record yet was still out on the street. It is unfortunate that even for a case as foul and obvious as this one, years have to pass before the trial. America's courts are inconsistent, unreliable, and unpredictable, but with the eyes of the world on this case, I suspect Viramontes will be watching TV in protective custody for a long time. And yes, it will be protective custody. Prisoners detest guys who brutalize women or children, and Viramontes wouldn't last a day in the general population. krisdaly: Thank you for pointing out that Illinois, and particularly Chicago, is among the worst places in the United States in terms of recognizing the right to self-defense. Viramontes could be confident that Natasha was unarmed. In Pennsylvania or Alabama or Colorado, he might have gotten a nice .45 caliber surprise when he approached those girls with a bat.
They ought to string them up.yes the woman too, and beat their brains out. This is disgusting. That poor girl.
In spite of this many in America think that their healthcare is poor, I think now they have a good reason to say "not so fast" as the Irish system isn't all that it's praised about by those who favor a SOCIALIZED "care" !
Chicago should contact the family and fly Natasha and her family back to the US. They should pay all expenses . Airfare, food, living expenses new clothes if need be and all the medical expenses for as long as this young lady needs to recover. If she dosn't recover Chicago should take care of her for the rest of her life also pay her funeral expenses or if God forbid it should come to that and fly this family back home to Ireland when this nightmare is over for this family. Every day the scumbags that did this should have to have some kind of reminder what they have done to this poor girl and her family.
God help anyone who has to rely on the NHS or the HSE in Ireland, These are truly third world services, and to make them run with third world competence they brought in third world staff to operate them. This beautiful young girl should have been kept in Chicago until she was recovered enough to leave hospital, Chicago broke her Chicago owns her etc.
I stoped reading the artical after it said it happened in Chicago the land of corruption,This mutt shouild have a f----cken gun placed to his head and his brains blowen out, If this P---ck walkes away the family should take him out. If not call me,
This account was headline stuff in Chicago. I'm sure, as we read this, plans are being made to make this right. Fundraisers, prayer vigils etc. Chicago is not responsible for this horrific act of criminals that need drug money, but believe me, Chicago will try to make it right.
Irishphotograph, pray those monsters pay for there crime. There is no forgiveness here.
Bring Christians born again to lay hands on her and pray for her...I prayed over my Dad when he was dying in intensive care and he survived..Doctors said 99/100 your Dad was dead...a 1% chance he could live without prayer! So I base my Faith on such prayers answered when said in Faith, Jesus says be born again!
THIS IS A RESULT OF THE ANTI-GUN POLITICIAN FORMER MAYOR RICHARD DALEY DISARMING THE LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS OF CHICAGO. IT HAS CREATED A DANGEROUS ATMOSPHERE WHERE CRIMINALS RUN THE STREETS OF CHICAGO KNOWING THAT "ANY" PERSON OR PERSONS IS EASY PREY FOR A VIOLENT ATTACK!!!
What a sin. A beautiful girl with so much to live for is beaten with a bat from a savage monster. Who is safe in this country anymore? Our laws are so weak that there is no fear from these creeps that they will go to jail forever. I'm glad I grew up in the 50's. If a guy beat a girl like that or God forbid committed a rape, they would be condemned by everyone and got some good old fashioned street justice. What a heartbreak for this family and it is happening to often.
Very sad to hear this...a lot of us here in the US were so inspired by Natasha's progress in Chicago..her family should be able to be with 24/7 if thats what they need and want to do!
Bring her back and let the US doctors work their magic. This was the most horrible of incidents and my heart breaks for this beautiful young lady and her family. I hope the people responsible get the full brunt of the law.
It would seem the family of this precious girl thought they were doing the right thing by taking her back to Ireland. I know when it happened there was a LOT of news about it here in the US. It is truly beyond sad that she has not progressed since she came home to land of her birth. I wonder if it would be in the realm of possibility to return her to the US and take her to the BEST rehab hospital which is in Houston, Texas?, This is where one of our congresswomen is recovering from an attack that happened in early January in Tucson, Arizona. I do hope and pray that whatever happens to Natasha, please know she will have lots of Irish Americans praying for her. God Bless her and her parents as they continue to face a hard road ahead.
Bring her back!
