The President of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR), Ciaran Staunton, will travel from New York to meet with Florida's Irish American leaders at a Mass to remember the victims of the Great Famine (An Gorta Mor).

Staunton has been asked to address the congregation with regards to ILIR’s ongoing work and how the public can help with the lobbying.

He will urge Irish Americans in Florida to contact Senator George LeMieux, (R-Fla) and ask him to support Senator Charles Schumer’s Immigration Reform initiative.

Ciaran will give an update on the current immigration reform proposal by Senator Charles Schumer. If this proposal is passed it would help the 50,000 (a figure which is constantly growing) undocumented Irish who are in the United States to become legal.

“Because of the 1965, “No Irish Need Apply Act”, our fellow countrymen and women cannot become full part of the American community,” said Staunton.

After the Mass ILIR will hold a meeting at The Field, Irish pub, at approximately 5pm for those interested in understanding the importance of immigration reform to the Irish.

The mass to remember the victims of the Great Famine (An Gorta Mor) will take place on Sunday May 30 at the Little Flower Church (1805 Pierce Street, Hollywood, Florida). It will be celebrated by Bishop John Noonan at 3pm.

ILIR’s meeting following the mass will take place at The Field (3281 Griffin Road, Dania Beach, Florida).
