Top Irish American cop Bill Bratton was the choice of British Prime Minister David Cameron to be Britain’s top cop and head of Scotland Yard. However, Cameron’s effort to recruit Bratton, 64, former chief in New York and Los Angeles, was blocked by his Home Secretary, who has demanded a British cop get the No. 1 job.

Bratton, married four times, whose strong Irish roots are from the Donegal area near the Irish border, revealed last night that he would have accepted the post if it had been offered and admitted he had been approached.

He said he would have "considered it an honor" to have been given the opportunity to apply for the post. He had previously accepted an honorary “Commander of the British Empire” title from the queen.

The shock Cameron move came after the resignation last month of Sir Paul Stephenson, the head of Scotland Yard, after he admitted too close a relationship with key figures in the News of the World phone hacking scandal.

Bratton has a stellar reputation as a crime fighter and is generally credited with a major role in ending New York’s out of control violence with his zero tolerance attitude.

Cameron is said to have discussed the job with Bratton informally, according to the Daily Telegraph.

An Irish American cop heading the British police would have been an incredible scenario for many in England.

To block him, the Home Secretary Theresa May immediately published a job advertisement stating that “applicants must be British citizens."

The Association of Chief Police Officers described the notion of foreign officers heading up British forces as “stupid."

Hugh Orde, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: “The notion that you can ship someone in from another country to run a police force in a different environment and a different culture is quite simply stupid.”

Orde, formerly Northern Ireland’s top cop, was also said to be a strong contender for the job.

Most ironically enough, it is actually another part of the good old Act of Settlement (1700) that is blocking Bratton from the appointment ("That after the said Limitation shall take Effect as aforesaid NO Person born out of the Kingdoms of England Scotland or Ireland or the Dominions thereunto belonging (although he be made a Denizen (except such as are born of English Parents)) shall be capable to .... enjoy any Office or Place of Trust either Civill or Military .... ").
Unlike the FBI in the United States, Dual Nationality is almost always allowed in the British Police Forces and Constabularies, certainly including the Metropolitan Police in London, and regardless of rank; and without knowing the fact that he was born in Boston, not that many in England actually know that he might be of Irish descent. To most in England and in Britain, Bratton is just simply an American.
Honestly, some of the people who write comments in this column sound as though they live in the past.
The Met Commander referred to below was born in the Middle East...but somehow managed to hold dual Nationality... Theresa May's statement is possibly discriminatory and should be challenged...This government have just lost the plot as the incidents on Tottenham's streets prove again today..!
I suggest Inspector Clousseau...!Of course an Irish American from a Catholic background could never be offered a 'top' police job...Institutionalised anti-Irish racism would ensure that Never Never Never hoppened...No couldn't trust a 'Mick'...Unlike those upstanding C of E members of the police force who recently showed their utter contempt for the Rule of Law in the recent gutter press scandal... It was ok too to have a Muslim/Asian as a Chief of Police...mind you he was later convicted of corruption... and Deputy of the Tory Party because we know there is no threat at all at all from that community and we want to demonstratehow multicultural we are...As long as you keep the 'Micks' out that's the important thing...I was interested to hear Prince William's Irish Guards uniform referred to as the 'Mick's uniform' by one of the Army top brass...Anti Irish racism is bred in the bone...Nothing but the Same Old Same Old...!
What is this-another gag?Must be some kind of publicity stunt. There is no way REPEAT no way a foreigner(especially a foreigner with Irish roots) would ever be considered for the top police job in the UK.Regrettably ,even tragically, many Brits regard the Irish as enemies and there would have been an uproar if he'd got the job.I don't believe for a minute that David Cameron intended to offer the job to this guy.
"He said he would have "considered it an honor" to have been given the opportunity to apply for the post". He had previously accepted an honorary “Commander of the British Empire” title from the queen." I'm Sorry but there is nothing Irish about this man. As former Police Officer and US Military Vet. I can not respect a so celled Irish Man who would take the post or the so called "honors". Just my opinion. He is just like Gerry and Martin, puppets of the brits.
yardleypa..! Shome hope...!
Sean Connery from the untouchables is my choice.
Their lose.
Bratton, although a publicity hound, would have been a good choice.
Now for something completely different, reverse brain drain.
