In a move that rankled some locals last Tuesday, former yacht dealer Bill McMachen bought up every foreclosed property in Macomb County, Michigan, for $4.9million, Fox 2 News, Detroit, reported. The payment figure reflected the amount of back taxes owed on 645 properties, 403 of which are family homes.

McMachen spent just $7,500 per property, which he intends to turn into an estimated $2million total profit after recouping his investment and fixing up the often-dilapidated homes. McMachen also told Fox 2 that he may donate some of the properties to people in need.

But some of the 300 other potential buyers—who each paid $500 and waited hours for a chance to participate in the county auction—said the county’s decision to sell to McMachen was unfair.

One of the potential buyers said he would have paid up to four times McMachen’s per-home price for some of the properties.

“If we knew it was going to happen like this, we wouldn’t have wasted any time,” the buyer told Fox 2.

Ted Wahby, the Macomb County Treasurer responsible for the deal, said he regretted smaller investors losing out on the chance to purchase.

“God bless them, I wish they could have,” he told Fox 2, “but that’s not my mission. I have a job to do. I have to collect the taxes, and that’s what we did.”

But the homes aren’t gone forever; McMachen’s intention to sell the properties means they’re still accessible to the investors who lost out at the auction, “probably for about the same price they would have bought it,” he said.

In fact, McMachen said he’s already fielding so many sales proposals that he’s “having a hard time keeping up with them all.”

“It’s overwhelming,” he said.

its probably McMahon or macmahon misspelt for its sound alone
If you ever needed a single statement,-- a picture if you will, of the Evil that is Capitalism, and so-called "free markets" look no further than this article and smile at the grinding misery of others !
I'm thinking of buying every foreclosed house in Stoke-on-Trent. I'm hoping to get change out of a tenner.
Mr. McMaheon: My Mum lives in Macomb county. That is where I grew-up and graduated from high school. After living everywhere(including Ireland),I now live in Oakland County. You have my respect dear lad. I owe ya a pint o Guiness! Cheers! Jacqueline Western
So the county finally got their back taxes so that they can provide government services, a speculator has put $5 mill of his own money at risk (because he could loss part or all of it) and there's a good chance that abandonded properties will become home to real people and businesses. Of course some will complain and moan--jealous that some good will come out of a bad situation. Go figure!
totally rotten unfair way of distributing these properties, obviously nothing has been learnt about property speculation, yankee capitalism in action,it sucks,a home should be where you bring your kids up,not some investment for fat cat speculators and greedy landlords, some fairer way of providing homes for people should be brought into practice rather than keeping people in perpetual debt just to have a roof over their heads and never being able to save enough to get on to the property market.the British had a great system of council houses for working people, the first time working people ever had decent accommodation, cheap rents and nice properties maintained by the council,(loads of good jobs provided)but super witch thatcher destroyed that system by selling them off cheap and not putting the profit into building more, reason,to reintroduce the good old capitalist rip off landlord system, which she successfully achieved.
I hope those who paid $500.00 to be able to bid at the auction were refunded there money. If not Macomb County, Michigan just scammed 300 people to the tune of $150,000.
How is McMachen an Irish name?, I grew up there and never heard of such a name. (Mackin yes but Mc Machen no) Sounds like this guy is setting himself up for a killing because he had the 5mil handy. If he does good with this then good luck to him but if he is in it for the easy kill and maximum profit then (fill in the blanks)
So, now He is a slumlord / landlord ... Good thinking.
