An Irish soldier who was killed while investigating a suspicious device was heard laughing moments before his death, an inquest has heard.

Ranger Aaron McCormick from Macosquin, County Derry, died after the explosion blasted the 22-year-old over a wall on Rememberance Sunday 2010.

The soldier who was from the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment got down on his belly to investigate the device, after shifting his weight the device exploded.

The inquest was told the Irish soldier’s injuries were so severe; there was no chance of survival.

The leader of the patrol, Sergeant Peter Keogh, told the inquest that a line of stones were deposited near their checkpoint. They believed local residents had placed them there as. The patrol examined the stones and Ranger McCormick, who had been carrying the mine detector got down on the ground to examine the area.

Sgt Keogh, who was present when the device went off said: "I remember watching at the time. He shifted his weight. He did something. He moved and the device functioned.

"I was just behind him. I was blown off my feet."

The coroner recorded a verdict of unlawful killing while on active service in Afghanistan.

And George you are a fool....if we lose the war you would not have a right to express you foolish opinion, so wether you like it or not, soldiers in Afghanistan DO fight for you, even if you are to stupid to know it
Congress is not denying Obama the money to go to War in Libya because of the money or ecomony, its because he did not get the congress signed on for it.......unlike GW who got auth for both Iraq and Afghanistan, ironic all the morons complaining about illegal wars and it is Obama who is the illegal one ...
You are absolutely right I would not represent you or save you from anything.........and you just confirmed my first thought you are a fool, GeorgeDillon
Paddyranger: I don't need anyone, least of all an Irish mercenary in the British Army, to "save my butt". You don't represent me, you don't defend me, I despise warmongers like you. You're a waste of space and money. You should be out sweeping the streets or cleaning toilets, that at least would be productive work. As for your garbage line "innocents get killed in every war" did you say that in the North of Ireland also? It's good that the House of Representatives is going to deny Obama the money to pursue these crazy wars. Our country is broke and yet we spend billions on wars thousands of miles from our shores.
GeorgeDillon, ajreaper did not say this fine young soldier was a fool, the only one saying that is you, and in my opinion you are the fool.
Theres our problem George- I understand the nature of being a soldier while you haven't a clue. They don't get to decide where they go, or when they'll go or if its the right decision to go- they get their orders and they are off. History will decide what was gained in both Iraq and Afghanistan and the end result may play out over generations. You, like so many others, think results need to come in days and weeks and what they are attempting to do in both those countries will take decades not weeks. Interesting you should mention Libya, I suppose as long as it was a Libyan killing his own people on purpose that was acceptable but if NATO kills some accidentally thats an altogether different thing- innocents get killed in every war and I think its safe to say that NATO has some of the strictest rules of engagement ever placed upon any combatants waging a war- yet mistakes still happen because war is not this static surgical undertaking, its fluid and dynamic and filled with vast unknowns but often requires immeadiate action based on limited or even inaccurate information. Its silly to think war can be waged where only the bad and wicked feel its wrath and the good escape escape it always. ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’ - the easy thing is to do nothing, just look the other way and tell yourself its across the globe, or ocean, or the border so its none of your business- hopefully when its across the street there's someone left who gives a crap to save your butt.
ajreaper: You're damn right he was a fool. Anyone who travels thousands of miles from his home in order to try to kill people is worse than a fool. What has been gained by this young man's death? Nothing. The NATO top generals still play their war games, still kill people as in Libya. The Taliban still do their crazy thing, as they will be doing next year, and the year after. I don't owe anything to this guy, he wasn't fighting for me. As has been pointed out, he was a volunteer. Senseless waste of a life, but then again there also have been countless senseless deaths of innocent Afghans, many killed by NATO missiles.
padyranger and joycean you are quite correct but you seem unaware of the Sinn Fein tendency towards marxism and anti Army - they were the only party from the whole island of Ireland not to attend the War Memorial at Islandbridge in the Republic of Ireland during the Queens visit. They consistently oppose the homecoming parades for the Irish guys (from North & South) returning home and opposed the Armed Forces Day & Flag that is in operation all across the UK even by Welsh & Scottish independence supporting parties (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland).
George one thing I like about you is everytime I believe you have something so completely ignorant and foolish you'll never top it, you always manage to prove me wrong. To say any service member is a fool, particularly one who has been killed in action is absolutely pathetic. Those who live in freedon today owe that to those who chose to give and sacrifice on behalf of those who could not and even for those like you who are far to selfish to ever serve anyone or anything other then their own self interests. I pity you.
GeorgeDillon...why was a guy from Co Londonderry in Afghanistan, he was there because the British Army is there and the Royal Irish Regiment is part of the British Army, its not Rocket science to figure out, just as the US Army is there, so is the Brit, this Young land was a volunteer as a Professional Soldier, why would be not be where his unit is sent???
I meant Ranger McCormick, not Sgt Keogh. George, we have thousand of young men and women in Afganistan, and believe me, they are not fools. Most of them are the best our country has to offer.I think we can pull back now that Osama is dead. I think we won the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, although there is no one who is going to surrender, and no point at which Afganistan is going to be safe and secure.
Why was a guy from Derry in Afghanistan anyway? Should have stayed at home. Any young man or woman who dies for Afghanistan is an utter fool. Good to see Obama is finally having a bit of sense and starting the pull-back.
First mistake you say Irish Guard and then go on to say Royal Irish Regiment - two separate regiments. Ranger Aaron McCormick was in the RIR. County Derry? Now come on - there is an argument over the city being called Derry or Londonderry (the London guilds built the current walled city near the ruins of `Derry` or `Doire`) but there is no such argument of the County. Before it was renamed County Londonderry it was called County Coleraine which annexed parts of Tyrone and Antrim to become County Londonderry (the County system being an English introduced system).
I am the wife of an American soldier. I know first hand the anquish that the families of military members face. I am sorry for Sgt Keogh's family's loss. Thank you for his service in the cause of freedom. Freedom is not free.
