The family of a man shot dead in front of his three-year-old son by the IRA has slammed a Sinn Fein award to the getaway driver in the bank raid in which he died.

Eamon Ryan was just 32 when he was murdered by the IRA during the 1979 robbery at a bank in Waterford.

Now his family have publicly criticised Sinn Fein’s decision to award driver Bill Hayes in recognition of his services to Irish freedom.

IRA men Eamonn Nolan and Aaron O’Connell received life sentences for his murder while Hayes served nine years for his role as a getaway driver.

The Irish Independent reports that Ryan’s widow Bernadette and grown-up children Peter and Dorothy have the special award given by Sinn Fein to Hayes.

The family said: “We note the Le Cheile award given to Bill Hayes for ‘outstanding service to the cause of Irish freedom’ at the 2011 Sinn Fein Ard Fheis.”

The family made their remarks in the wake of the recent murder of policeman Adrian Donohoe during a raid on a credit union in County Louth.

After the Donohoe killing, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams then apologised in the Irish parliament for the first time for the IRA’s murder of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe in 1996.

Waterford Fine Gael deputy Paudie Coffey then called on Adams to deliver a similar apology to the Ryan family.

Adams subsequently issued a statement to the Waterford-based Munster Express newspaper last month expressing his ‘deep regret’ about what had happened.

Ryan’s family have told the Irish Independent that they note the expression of regret by Adams ‘about Eamon’s murder’ and revealed the damage it had caused to them.

They said: “Thirty-four years on from his murder, Eamon’s loss is felt every day by his friends and family.”

Ryan’s sister Mairead Bolger has also criticised Adams for claiming that she had given a ‘positive response’ to the IRA’s previous apology for killing civilians back in 2002.

She told the paper: “That is absolutely rubbish.”

Whilst searching for those who killed your brother maybe you will find some clues as to the killers of your fellow Irish lawyers Nelson and Finucane.
KLeah whilst you are "digging" on behalf of your brother and as a lawyer maybe you can dig out some info your fellow lawyers Nelson and Finucane. BTW the loss of your brother was a tradgey and your loss mus tbear heavy on you.
Seano: It's too easy to wind you up lad. My personality is fine thank you. I live in Ireland not Pommie land (england) and the weather is beautiful at the moment. Also I have no mercy for any SinnFein/Provos since they killed my brother while on a business trip to N. Ireland. We got no satisfactory answer from Gerry Adams and his ilk for that but I am a lawyer so I'll digging till I get to the answer.
Murder is murder..
Ireland: I know there were summary executions during that period. But to compare that period to what the Provo's dis is two completely different things. And one needs to be aware of the circumstances surrounding those executions. The Provo's were a bunch of gnagsters who enriched themselves and covered it in Irish freedom.
leahkinsella! A story in Ireland's quality broadsheet The Irish Times (this very day!) reported how a certain competitor journal is demanding that journalists submit their copy to a non-journalist manager before publication, which their combined British and Irish union finds professionally objectionable. Submitting all presidential candidates to equal expose is one thing, but obsessing about one who was a product of his environment was a tad compulsive. Whilst Feronica Guerin's expose of drug-pushing criminal elements was admirable - if foolhardy, I fear she confused her role as an investigative journalist with professional policing, leaving a husband without a wife, and a son without a mother. A very costly journalistic award, surely? ancavker! TG4 are screening a documentary about summary executions between 1919-22 next Monday evening. (It may be YouTube-able or TG4 Verwer-able!) Not pretty!
Please do try to keep Seano....NOLAN didnt get the award either!,,,,,,,
Yor misteaken leahkinsella I claimed you had at least four personalties not four different people you poor thing. I made a mistake You have no personality at all. Yes Dano I did mean Nolan ,It's so easy to make your day. The weather is glorious here in Oz but it's a cool 22 degrees cent. today. Better then the brain freezing temperature you and Leah put up with in Pommie land,it tends to dull the senses.
What a disgrace!! An innocent man killed. And then to claim it was done in the cause of Irish freedom is disgusting! The whole Provo campaign played right into the revisionsits hands as the Provo's claimed they were following in the footsterps of Collins, and Tom Barry, and Liam Lynch and Ernie O' Malley, and all the others who justly fought for Irish freedom, and did everything they could to prevent innocents from dying. These are the true patriots of Ireland, not the Provo's or Gerry Adams or any of the rest of them.
Dano: you're so lucky. Seano once accused me of being four other people on this site! LOL
leahkinsella - Yes, poor old Seano, jumping up and down over a slip-up by a Marks n Spencer employee in another post...and not a word of criticism for his 'heroes' in this story....and now he thinks I'm somebody else!!! Sure must be hot over in Oz these days...
Telling the truth certainly can't be said of Sinn Fein.
DanOLoingsigh: Don't mind Seano he's been too long in the Austrlian sun and has tunnel vision about Irish Republicans, he thinks anything is right for "the cause" whatever that is. IrelandNorth, the Irish Independant is a highly respected and award winning newspaper. It's Crime Reporter Veronica Guerin told the truth about the Irish Drug Barons was murdered for her in 1996 for doing so. I thin your prejudice stems from the fact the newspaper investigated Martin McGuinness's "career" over the years and when he ran for President of Ireland printed the truth which his followers didn't like (and which many of us also knew to be true)the journalists were the subject of threats. The truth certainly can be said of Sinn Fein.
Keep up Seano!!...Mr Ryan was the victim...have another try.
I suppose what Ryan accomplished in the last 30yrs. is the reason for his award.
