Uproar over rapist Larry Murphy's release unnecessary says official.

John Lonergan, the former governor of Mountjoy Prison, has said hundreds of convicted sex offenders have been released from prison in recent years and that the public outcry over Larry Murphy’s release is over the top.

Lonergan said Murphy, a convicted rapist, should be given a chance to reintegrate into society

"Anyone with common sense will say that communities have a right to be protected and I can understand their fear and their anxiety. On the other hand, a person who has been sentenced, who has served their sentence, also has the right to mend his or her ways and to reintegrate back into society,” said Lonergan, just days after Murphy was released from Arbour Hill Prison.

Lonergan criticized the public hysteria surrounding Murphy’s release.

"Personally, I think the way it’s being dealt with by the gardaí, managing on a low-profile basis but monitoring the person, that is the only way. Any other thing like society taking it into their own hands and standing outside houses picketing, that’s over the top."

Lonergan said that many released offenders were able to return to normal lives.

He said: “We must have the belief that people can change."

A gross miscarriage if justice.For the judge to allow such a short sentence for such heinous crimes is deplorable. To release this vile creature without any sort of treatment and testing is irresponsible. That should have been made terms of his release during sentencing. Sure he can refuse treatment, but then he is not allowed release. It's as simple as that. If any women/girls go missing in Ireland or in USA, for that matter, it will be blood on the judges hands.

i'd say that he has plans to come to NY as his sweatshirt indicates that he is a Yankee's fan and his securing of a passport. Just add another one to the long list of sexual predators here who they can't keep track of. I hope that there is reciprocity with the USA to be put on a sex offender's list if you have been convicted to the offense in another country.

It makes you ask, "How does a SERIAL RAPIST - EVER- get released?" A Serial Rapist! Would you release a serial killer? ...NO! A serial pedophile?...No! But crimes against women are OK??? Crap, that sure says a lot. And he applied for a got, a passport! What the HECK!!! Why in the world are we letting convicted criminals have passports?? This is seriously messed up.

Readers should remember a little of Lonergan's background. He (mis)administered Mounjoy Jail in Dublin for many years. During his time running the place it was a rat-infested rat-ridden dump, where drugs were bought & sold openly. There were even cases where prisoners were murdered by psychopaths they were forced to share a cell with. He was happy to keep his job, and the fat salary that came with it. Now he's retired, enjoying retirement benefits that the huge majority of Irish could never hope to qualify for. Lonergan has no credibility on any issue. He's typical of the worthless overpiad incompetents that have misruled Ireland for decades--they should all be swept away.

Couldn't be better said, ridinggirl. There isn't any rehabilitation possible for sociopaths because they don't have any empathy - zip, nada, zero - for anyone, ever. Given the chance, they will rape and/or murder and you can be sure of it. That's a fact.

WHoa...as we say here in the south....y'all have a really uneducated ex governor of the prison.....seems like maybe all of the governors, lawyers, and judges should all be forced to take some serious heavy duty classes in Abnormal Human Psychology. It is well documented that violent sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated. period. They will always be a danger to their future victims, and many will escalate into murder as well as rape and torture. This "people" are not human, and CANNOT change. This man showed no remorse, no normal emotion.....you have let a shark out back into society. He will rape and most likely kill again, and people like the ex governor should be held responsible. And his comment about people standing outside picketing being over the top? Simply inexcuseable. Ireland....Hold your authorities responsible, and insist that THEY be better trained regarding sexual sociopaths. In this day and age, that is what is over the top. No excuse for such ignorance, when it will cost others their lives.

Are you Effing kidding me? Release bank robbers...tax evaders fine but rapist? It has been proven time and again sexual predators don't get better...certainly not in prison. This is a travesty.
