The family of an Irish-born 9/11 victim have slammed the idea of burning Korans to make an attack on the Muslim faith.

Mark Clifford’s sister Ruth McCourt and her four-year-old daughter Juliana were on board the United Airlines flight which crashed into the Twin Towers.

In an incredible coincidence, Mark’s brother Ron escaped the Twin Towers that day, not knowing his sister and niece had been killed in the plane overhead.

Mark told the Irish Examiner he is worried it could all happen again, "I’m very concerned that 9/11 could happen again. There’s no doubt that the burning of the Koran would incite hatred and increase the possibilities of more terrorist killings. All it would achieve is retaliation from extremists.

"It is an act of the utmost stupidity and could have terrible consequences. The pastor should be preaching forgiveness, not inciting hatred and confrontation."

"I’ve moved on from it as best I can, but the scars still remain and they always will. Time is a great healer, but I think about what happened every single day.

"At times what happened doesn’t seem real. It almost seems like something out of a James Bond movie.

"I’ve tried to understand the motivation of those who carried out the attacks and have traveled to the Middle East a couple of times to try and get an understanding of the radical fundamentalism behind it.

"I’ve learnt that compassion and diplomacy are the only way we’re going to bridge the gap with extremists. I’ve also learnt forgiveness and often wonder if the terrorists really understood the full repercussions of what they were doing that day.

"Unfortunately, the world has changed. The countless deaths of American and British soldiers over in Iraq and now Afghanistan, most of whom are under 20, are as a consequence of 9/11."

This year, he says, "I’ll be collecting my thoughts and remembering Ruth and Juliana on the anniversary at the family home in Cork.

"I have had to move on, because there is no point in being angry. The only way to stop this happening again is through diplomacy and religious tolerance."

come on people, burning the koran would only bring more hate, against innocent americans, thus playing into the hands of the main middle east torrorist cult who always seems to be connected, with causing the wars in the first place!

compassion & diplomacy is a total waste of time on muslims. A bullet between the eyes is all they understand. seano...suprise, suprise, another lame post.
Get over it and move on with your life. The anti Muslim rallies in the U.S. are no different to anti U.S. rallies in other countries. You never see Muslims burning the Bible they regard it as a holy book.quey your blog is to emotional and lacks reason.
We just passed the 10th anniversary of 911. I agree that burning the Koran is stupid, But I am sick of America turning the cheek. We watch them burn our flag all the time, with dummy bodies that they are beating up in the square. Ugly demonstrations against us. They have managed to get people in our country to go against the 10 commandments and things like taking "IN GOD WE TRUST". The judges in our courts have actually allowed this and passed laws for this. I don't care what religion you are.Thats part of being an American. But DO NOT SHOVE YOUR RELIGION DOWN MY THROAT!! America is where you are supposed to live and believe in what you choose. But the lawyers and the Judges are letting that change. So I can understand why some people want to retaliate. For any US court to allow that Mosque to be built near Ground Zero is a insult to all americans. 10 years later, and America doesn't have it right yet.. When have we ever made any country change their religious beliefs??? NEVER!!!
While, I agree that burning the Koran is not the way to go about change,Saudi Arabia needs to step up to the plate and be the policeman of the Arab world not the rest of us, we are infidels. Saudi has its own mess to contend with afterall bin Laden is one of them. Islamic extremeists may they think they are smart but they have awakend a sleeping giant. My study of Islamic extremism shows me that they have no understanding of the fact Christians don't go fire bombing over the bible, they need to lighten up. A book is not the actual practice of a faith, it is a means of guidance in the practice of a persons faith. In today's western world church and state are separate to a degree, the Muslim world needs to take a look at that and separate a personal faith from government.
