A family with four children will see a reduction in €432 ($581) per year after yesterday’s budget, with the introduction of the expected cuts to child benefit.

The government announced that payments for the first and second child in a family will remain the same, but cuts of €19 ($25) per month for the third child and €17 ($22) for the fourth and subsequent children will be implemented.

Child benefit is a payment given to parents or guardians of children under the age of 18 who are in full-time education.

The cutbacks are expected to generate savings of up to 45 million euro. Previous calls for the child-allowance scheme to be means-tested were not introduced.

The back to school allowance for two and three-year-olds is also to be abolished, with an estimated saving of 30 million euro.

Despite the cutbacks, minister for social protection Joan Burton said Ireland remains strong on social welfare cuts.

“Even after the loss of our economic sovereignty, our core welfare rates remain generous by comparison with our nearest neighbours,” she said.

"I understand that these measures will have implications for some families but I must point out that families at risk of poverty will be more likely to benefit from supplementary child related payment such as child related increases to social welfare payments and the Family Income Supplement. Those payments remain unchanged," Burton added.

The iron law of oligarchy reigns supreme in modern Ireland. Rather than the southern Irish government representing the interests of its constituents to the Brussels sprouts, they are representing the interests of the Brussels sprouts to the Irish. Bring back the punt.
@greensod.No apology needed. But you are right.FF/FG the two main parties have sold the people down the drain. The Irish people didn't know what was happening behind closed doors.I have nothing against Europe. But we didn't even know we were been shafted. If Sinn Fein had a louder voice five years back we wouldn't be in the position we are now.
Down with the Troika!
Sirpeter:Sorry for the mix up.
@greensod.That's not my post (Dec 06, 2011, 09:00 AM EST)Second one is though. The first had no username then when I posted. My name attached to the first for some reason.
Government Waste is Obviously No Stranger to Dublin !
Sirpeter: I agree the country is bust and the traitors in Dublin sold the people down the drain. But all is not lost Sinn Fein is there to keep an eye on their dirty work, and once again, when the time is right will restore Ireland to a Nation once again.
means testing should be the criteria for such gravitas.
The Irish payments are plain daft: EVERY parent in the land ~ however rich or poor ~ with four children, gets €674 per month. €150 each for the first two and €187 for the third and all subsequent offspring. In addition to several other welfare payments for those on lower earnings. Burton should have set the payment for all children at €150 and 'recouped' €444 pa from the 3rd child onwards. > > > is correct to compare the mystifyingly high rates in Ireland to European neighbours. Child Benefit in the UK is £81.20 monthly for the first and sensibly reduces to £53.60 for the second child onwards. ~ Nobody can be blamed for mindlessly grabbing this 'free' money but surely there will come a time when they must realise they have milked the cow dry and the party is very nearly over!!
Sovereignty like democracy are just words. You would be surprised how little of each has been in any country.Fiscal Union has always been the plan for Europe.
Ain`t much point complaining as the country is bust and signed it`s sovereignty over to the EU when it joined the euro single currency
