More than 10,000 people were left disappointed in Ireland Saturday as the Virgin Mary failed to appear as predicted at Knock Basilica.

By 3 p.m. Irish time (10 a.m. EST) about 7,000 people had crammed into the Basilica with a further 3,000 people outside.

Dubliner Joe Coleman, the man who had predicted the apparition left the Basilica at about 4 p.m. saying he had seen Our Lady as anticipated.

Coleman, who says he is “a visionary of our Blessed Mother” said he had also received communication from the Virgin Mary.

However, he said he was unwilling to reveal the message.

Speaking earlier this week Coleman had he warned that the visitation would only be visible “to people who come with an open heart”.

Earlier this month an estimated 5,000 gathered at Knock Shrine with some people claiming to have seen the sun dancing in the sky.

Mr Coleman said the Virgin Mary had asked him to recite the Rosary with a priest in the Basilica and he said he was disappointed that the Catholic Church had declined to make one available.

Also speaking earlier this week, the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, said such gatherings were not condoned by the Church.

“It is not healthy, does not give glory to God and . . . is not good witness to the faith to be looking for extraordinary phenomena,” he said.

I think Joe Coleman does'nt even know what day it is. Only for one of his gullible but kind neighbours drove him to Knock, he would'nt know how to get there.
It's too bad that the faithful have such a fragile faith that they require an apparition to reaffirm it! Why don't they listen to Christ on the matter: "Blessed are they who believe and have not seen."
"Dubliner Joe Coleman, the man who had predicted the apparition left the Basilica at about 4 p.m. saying he had seen Our Lady as anticipated", "had also received communication from the Virgin Mary. However, he said he was unwilling to reveal the message". But he later relented and said that in fact she ordered two fish suppers and a saveloy and chips for St John and two cans of coke and a can of sprite for St John "He's so picky" says she.
I thought the Irish were smarter than that. Religion was born when the first charlatan met the first fool.
So long as people put their faith and trust in fables, they will be disappointed. Mary is not the center of Christianity, Christ is. It is not Mary-anity. Get off the Mary kick and get on the right track. Makes for a good story and how people can get fleeced. Pray to God - that is where it counts. If you keep Mary in the mix, the Irish will have to give up the Shamrock and find 4 leaf clovers.
church famous for secrets!
I'm not so concerned about whether an apparition is real or a miracle or anything else, as I am about how I'm failing at trying to be as God wants me to be.
Does anyone really think these so called apparitions if they existed are from God,? Why would god have anything to do with the international church of Child Abusers,?
So many people are simply trying for something to believe in, especially in this day and age, that one sighting can help so many with a sadden and broken heart, is in itself a miracle.
If someone hallucinates or deludes themselves there’s a Easter Bunny or a 3-story frog outside their home, we’d dismiss them as a loon or psychotic. But if someone does the same with visions of Mary, they are believed by thousands. Last year thousands came to pray and set-up shrines because someone believed a stain in a window at a local hospital in Springfield MA, was a vision. The web is rampant with photos of “rosary beads” attributed to Mary. In reality they are nothing but the result of sloppy night photography. The photographers inadvertently leaves the shutter open while moving the camera. If distant streetlights are visible, this stretches out the light and makes visible the electrical pluses of the electric grid. I can get the same effect anywhere. No miracle here. And this is the dilemma of the True Believer. They are determined to believe in something for which there is no objective proof. So they either unconsciously create that proof or believe the comforting delusions of others.
Beg your pardon, madam, but at the time of Lourdes, Fatima, etc. the bishops and priests had much the same to say. It was only AFTER that the church got behind the appartions, not from the get-go. I have to say that I am glad that the Church has dragged her heels on events such as these. It's much easier to say that the events were correct and we were slow to acknowledge them than to say they were hoaxes and the Church acted too swiftly.
He's right. The Archbiship of Tuam, that is. But that doesn't stop it happening does it.
