A priest defamed by national broadcaster RTE, which accused him of raping a woman and fathering her child, told his parishioners on Sunday that the television company’s apology freed him from lies, false allegations and baseless accusations.

Father Kevin Reynolds, 65, was speaking at a Mass to mark his reinstatement as parish priest of Ahascragh, Co. Galway.

Hundreds of Mass-goers gave him a standing ovation, and bunting and flags were spread to greet him on his return to the parish.

He had stepped aside while a Prime Time television program screened last May was investigated.
It had claimed he raped a girl in Kenya and fathered her child in 1982 while ministering there as a Mill Hill missionary.

Last week, RTE fully and unreservedly apologized to Reynolds for the defamation. It said he was entirely innocent of the allegations.

The Bishop of Elphin, Christopher Jones, was at the welcome home Mass. The bishop said that all 600 people present were truly delighted to welcome Reynolds back home.

He had responded to the attack on his integrity with great courage, strength, and resilience during the most dreadful experience in his life, said Jones.

Jones said all the priests of the diocese were deeply concerned and hurt at what Reynolds had endured and were delighted to see him back.

“We pray that Father Kevin will continue to enjoy peace of mind and heart as he resumes his ministry among us. We pray that through the power of the Holy Spirit, his family will experience healing in their hearts,” he said.

“Father Kevin has carried his cross with great dignity. He willingly stepped aside from ministry and never expressed anger or impatience of any kind. I believe that his own deep faith and spirituality have been his greatest source of courage and consolation through this most dreadful experience of his life.”

Reynolds said no earthly treasure could possibly buy or replace the great feeling it was to be with his parishioners again, and that he knew now that bearing false witness against one’s neighbor does so much damage that it may never be repaired.

Reynolds’ libel action in relation to last May’s allegations is expected to continue before the High Court within weeks.

He had pleaded with the makers of A Mission to Prey not to broadcast the accusations on Prime Time.  He even offered to take a paternity test. He later undertook the test, which came back negative last month.

RTE said in its apology, “RTE now fully and unreservedly accepts that the allegations made by Prime Time against Father Kevin Reynolds are baseless, without any foundation whatever, and untrue, and that Father Reynolds is a priest of the utmost integrity who has had an unblemished 40-year career in the priesthood.”

How many of the charges are just about the money, and how many priest have been charged and lost it all because of a lie?
The Irish state broadcaster RTE is run by utterly corrupt and incompetent people. They steal most of their program ideas from British television, and then shamelessly claim they're originals. Some years back, when RTE was happily operating the system of state censorship then in vogue, a young reporter was fired because she did an interview with someone in the North of Ireland that the government objected to. I'm sorry, I don't remember the details, but they could be traced on line I am sure. The point is-- how many lazy slobs in RTE have been fired over the current disgraceful slander of an innocent man? NONE.
Where are all the comments from the people who continually write in attacking the Catholic Church? They seem to have gone strangely silent. An interesting comment by AngelPrecious.I wonder what the total number around the world is of priests that have been falsely accused. In my own country Australia a Catholic priest who was named under priviledge of Parliament as being an alledged offender now appears to have the case againgst him crumbling to pieces.I feel that there are many people using this dreadful business as an excuse to attack the Catholic Church.
AngelPrecious asks a very valid question below – where are the SNAP people jumping in under this article of Paddy Clancy's to express gladness and relief for priests like Fr. Reynolds and other falsely accused innocent priests like him in the USA? Will SNAP publish statistics showing a very large number of people who joined their ranks were liars, making false allegations against priests? Where are the media people (like in ICentral) who publicly denigrated the Church at large on the issue? Well, where are they?? (At least in this instance, RTÉ got it its come-uppance and will pay dearly for the defamation). Where are media people highlighting the great work by 98% of all priests and religious? Statistically, 2% of all priests in America had abuse charges substantiated (shame and life-long penance be upon them!). That is no different from the 2% statistic of any population at large. Where are media peoples’ screams for shaming and naming the 2% in the community at large who abuse children?? Maybe it’s because some of them are their uncles, cousins, friends, next-door neighbours, perhaps fathers & mothers, at least someone they personally know. They wouldn’t want anyone to know about that, now, would they? No they wouldn’t... they’d pick a priest or a politician or a movie star, some notable individual distant from them to highlight this serious sickening problem and the life-long harm it does to those abused. We need balanced reporting before unbalanced reports result in retribution, such as RTÉ faces.
I wonder how many others, are innocent, who are in their graves? That would be interesting research.. what is your thoughts on that... So many great priest who give their lives.. feel same, because of stares, and waste of time talk...
I looked up the numbers in the US and found over 300 priests have been falsely accused of abuse, just in hope of monetary gain. Where are all the SNAP people in this thread?? God bless Fr. Reynolds. He sounds like a good, holy priest, like many that serve our Lord within the Catholic Church!
A victory for Father Reynolds. God Bless him!
Justice was served, in the long run! Father Kevin Reynolds should win a nice settlement, for his short term grief!
