There’s jobs in them there hills – up to 80,000 of them for Irish workers according to a visiting delegation from Canada.

Construction vacancies in British Columbia could be filled by Irish workers according to the group from Western Canada who are touring Ireland this week.

The British Columbia Construction Association, which represents 2,000 companies, has sent a delegation to attend a number of job fairs in Ireland.

They are anxious to recruit from the huge pool of building workers now unemployed after the collapse of the Celtic Tiger.

The 11 strong delegation are anxious to see British Columbia as a viable workplace for Irish builders according to the Association’s President Manley McLachlan.

“There is a world of opportunity for suitable workers in the western province,” said McLachlan.

“We are in Ireland find skilled labour to help fill thousands of vacancies in the construction and related trades. Our ministry of jobs, tourism and innovation is also represented on this trip.”

Talks are already scheduled for the week with various Irish government officials, the Construction Industry Federation and other groups.

McLachlan says there will be about 335,000 job openings between 2012 and 2014 in British Columbia, which has a population of 4.5 million and is physically more than 10 times the size of Ireland.

He told the Irish Times: “The trip has two objectives: to better understand the apprenticeship system in Ireland in order to establish whether there is a close match with the system in Western Canada, and to investigate opportunities to attract skilled construction workers.

“We have a significant amount of work scheduled and a very significant shortfall in skilled workers.

“The economy in British Columbia is relatively good and there were many projects planned, including residential, mining and oil and gas worth 210 billion Canadian dollars in the market, under development or being planned.

“The industry is under pressure because 35,000 workers are due to retire shortly and will leave large gaps in senior site management.”

The Canadians are not only looking for qualified tradesmen but also need experienced managers with 45,000 jobs to be filled just to complete the major projects already planned.

“Ireland is our only focus,” he maintained. “Quite frankly, we anticipate a real match between the training systems and the cultural similarities between both cultures which is very attractive to us.”
The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program means visa applications could be dealt with in a ‘relatively easy manner’ said MacLachlan.

Curdexter: "I have worked for minimum wage." And you were grossly overpaid.
@bunkerhill: Why does it matter that Canada is in the commonwealth? So is Australia & New Zealand and you'll find plenty of Irish working there too. These are paying jobs for those with the skills to do them. Millions of Irish find work in Britain as well. America is not the only place the Irish migrate to.
I have worked for minimum wage. We have the highest minimum wages in Europe.
Roads in the North, thats part of the UK. Where are you getting that info from? I have worked for minimum wage but as I am a trained medical professional, I dont have to anymore. I could emigrate if I wanted to as there is a shortage of people with my qualification in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia which means Id not be taking a job from anyone if I went to any of those countries. My borther is a carpenter in NZ and theyre looking for Irish tradesmen too. He was home for christmas, there is a shortage of opportunities here for him. There is building work going on at work at the mo and from what Ive over heard, all the jobs are held by irish men. Dubai is looking for Irish tradesmen too. SO why shouldt Irish men take them? Why should my brother spend six months working on a 'road' here when he can get a job as a joiner on a long term project in New Zealand?
Over $1Billion for roads in the North a golf course/spa or two. In the South undercut the immigrants and you'll be in. Would you work for minimum wage or less?
Redbranch, so where are these construction jobs in Ireland that the Irish wont do?
George, as much as I dislike you, there are a few points you make which I actually agree with. So have a look at this and speak your mind-independent. ie/national-news/crucial-visa-and-work-permit-services-cut-back-3031894.html
Canada's gain, America's loss. George, those jobs are still there in Ireland but the Irish just won't do them.
Hey come to Canada Paddy great country. Just need to get rid of Harper and the Conservatives.
My wife was in Killarney in October and spoke to a talented, single, young man who had built his own house, and was a electrician, along with have many other skills. Michael had been recruited to Canada and was going as an adventure and to make money, but he was planning to return to Ireland. I would hope this is not a brain drain but just an outlet for these talented young people while Ireland recovers as it truly will. The culture and history or Ireland is pre-historic and invaluable. While we love Canadians, and my wife has them in her immediate family, one thing that worries us is that Canada is a member of the Commonwealth. Will the queen be moving into Ireland?
So Ireland exports tens of thousands of its own workers at the very same time as it imports tens of thousands of foreign workers. What a great idea! How come no other country has thought of this policy?
Yes, and you can trust Canadian banks, unlike US or European or Irish banks. And, unlike the US, you will have health coverage.
Canada is a grand country, a bit too liberal in some areas for my taste, but probably not for a European. People are nice and if jobs are plentiful and I was a construction worker stuck on the dole in Ireland for want of a job, I'd take Canada up on its offer.
This is good news for the Irish. B.C. is one of our most beautiful provinces...expensive, but beautiful.
