U.K.'s Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May issued a statement saying there was a "strong possibility" of an Irish-related terrorist attack in Great Britain.

The terror threat of an Irish-related attack in Great Britain has been raised from moderate to substantial. Essentially this means that the British government considers that an attack is a "strong possibility."

This is the first time in history a threat level has been published, in connection with Great Britain and Irish militant groups.

Last week the head of the MI5 security service said that Irish Republicans who were opposed to British role in Northern Ireland could strike the British mainland according to the BBC.

In a statement, U.K.'s Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May said, "The director general of the Security Service has informed me that he has raised the threat to Great Britain from Irish-related terrorism from moderate to substantial, meaning that an attack is a strong possibility.

"Judgments are based on a broad range of factors, including the intent and capabilities of terrorist groups.

"This is the first time we have published the Irish-related threat assessment to Great Britain … This is in the interests of transparency and to encourage people to remain vigilant."

She asked the public to report anything suspicious they noticed in their everyday lives and to help the police and security services in their "continuing efforts to discover, track and disrupt terrorist activity."

"The first and most important duty of government is the protection and security of the British people," said May.

"We have been consistent in stating that the threat to the U.K. from terrorism is real and serious. The balance we aim to strike is keeping people alert but not alarmed," added May.

A statement from the Home Office said people "should not let the fear of terrorism stop you from going about your day-to-day life as normal. Your risk of being caught up in a terrorist attack is very low."

In recent months militant splinter groups of the IRA have stepped up their attacks in Northern Ireland. They have attacked security forces and the Real IRA is believed to be leading much of the campaign including car bombs and shooting at police officers.

Sinn Fein/IRA violence of 30 years produced nothing but grief for too many people. Their campaign was an abject failure. They have nothing to show for their cowardice. Ulster is better off been governed by Ulster and not by lackeys. The two postings below serve to prove my point.
Don't humour any fool on here with the name Strongbow, he is clearly a troll just trying to ruffle peoples feathers, don't respond to him and hell go away!
@Wrongbow..(1)The Irish tribes had more grief from other Irish tribes than they had from the British..Fail @Wrongbow..(2)The Unionists of Ulster have a perfect right to live independent of any Irish Republic..Fail @Wrongbow..(3)Ireland needs to come back into the fold of the British isles..Fail @Wrongbow..(4)The British brought culture and civilization to Irish shores where it was severely lacking..Fail Wrongbow..Get this through your thick stupid Oompa-Loompa orange head,we spent 800 years trying to get out, why would we want to go back?..Been part of Britain stinks..But we will be taking back the piece that was robbed from us,it's only a matter of time.Sinn Fein is now the largest party in Northern Ireland and ye haven't a friend in the world not even England want ye.
McNamara31, yer not thinking with the rational side of yer brain. Maybe that is because it has drowned under the delusional republican ethos that has been fed to you since you were a wee one. The Irish tribes had more grief from other Irish tribes than they had from the British. The Unionists of Ulster have a perfect right to live independent of any Irish Republic.
Applejuice, I can't agree with your view that the 26 has nothing to offer. The south is the best place in the world to live in my humble! But I agree with what you say about peaceful re-unification, and also with your views on the Loyalists resorting to violence in the south as well as the north.
Lorcan, thank you for your patience. The problem with the internet is that you can never see body language or expression, and misunderstandings are easy. I don't know if we can agree on the terrorism/freedom fighters issue, but I respect your opinion. I have a very simplistic view of what is essentially a very complicated problem. I want a united Ireland, I don't want violence to achieve it. Maybe I'm an idealist, I don't know. I do know that a lot of the people I've spoken to (in the south, not the north) don't want a return to the height of the troubles, and do fear an Orange backlash. I'm not a political person. Just a mum who wants peace for her children. Agree with your opinion of Parliament.
why dont they address the irish concens in northern ireland and stop spinning the situation in the british favor we all know from the past that when this kind of situatation arises it is because one side of the socalled peace process is being left out and neglected that seems to be the case here when i went to school the bully of people only understood one thing sometimes a good punch in the mouth from time to time and and a good kick in the butt it seems that time has come again and thats the only way to get their attention shame on them for letting it get to this point again god bless america and god bless a united ireland 32 counties there is a dream and one day god willing it will be fulfilled
The bankrupt 26 counties have nothing to offer the people of ulster , except a dysfunctional economy, net emigration of 35,ooo people per annum and a bankrupt financial system in far worse shape than that of Iceland.Loyalist paramilitaries would dissect/blow to pieces the island of Ireland if they wre bullied into unity.Create a successsful 26 counties and a united Ireland will gradually follow. The people of Texas will never vote to rejoin Mexico! Why ?
Sparklet , one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter and often it is the imperialist and the much larger and better equipped invading force who name's the freedom fighter a terrorist for standing up and fighting back . It is foolish of you to compare a 30 minute warning to a suicide bomber or to total world domination through sharia law and a united Ireland , they are not the same beast , so i'm afraid your question is unanswerable . I accept your apology with open arm's and I wish to apologise to you for portraying myself as a neanderthal and using childish names to get my point across .
Sparklet , it is not my wish to see the orange order forced out of the UK or Ireland , it is the house of common's and the powers that be and the banker's who have their greedy hand's wrapped tightly around Northern Ireland with no wish to let it go anytime soon , it is these parasites that I and many like me have a problem with , I beleive that in time nationalist's and unionist's will lean toward's acceptance and a permissive attitude of eachother when ireland is finally united , of course there will be many unhappy people with a will to cause mayhem to get their point across but it should an Irsh army and police force that deal's with it not 10 downing steet .
Sparklet , if you scroll back to the first post you will discover that I was not the first to use the word murderers, you will also find that i was merely responding to the post previously posted by jason in which I had wholeheartedly disagreed with , it was your comment after this coupled with jason's that caused me to retaliate and defend what i beleive to be just cause and agenda . I am unsure if maybe we have misunderstood eachother or as you have put it '' At a guess I would say we actually agree on the aims, but not the means ''
I think (hope) that Strongbow is deliberately trying to wind people up.
Strongbow..You are one delusional person in total denial of what the British occupation was to Ireland and every other country with the bad fortune to have this arrogant breed touch their shores.
Lorcan, genuine question. You see terrorists as legitimate freedom fighters. Well although Ive never agreed with those methods, I did - in the earlier years - fully understand their motivations, and supported them. But what is your opinion on Islamic terrorism? Can anyone support one form of terrorism whilst condemning another? I apologise if this comes across as trolling, or as the rantings of a knobhead. It isn't intended to.
Ireland needs to come back into the fold of the British isles. Separation from the motherland Britain has only left it governed by backward bumpkins and vile papist priests. The British brought culture and civilization to Irish shores where it was severely lacking. It is amazing how people from the break-away south of Ireland sing the praises of literary luminaries such as Yeats, Beckett, Swift, Shaw etc, etc, while denouncing the culture they were steeped in.
