Polish police have found the body of a man believed to be the Irish football fan missing since last Saturday.

The body was recovered from the Brda river in Bydgoszcz on Wednesday where Irish supporter James Nolan was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Wicklow native James, a 21-year-old environmental engineering student, had become detached from the group he was travelling with to the European Championships.

His parents had issued a plea for information on Tuesday while Irish police travelled to Poland to help with the search.

James, from Blessington in County Wicklow, had been in Poland since June 7th for the European Championships.

Irish police said on Wednesday morning they had been made aware of local reports that a body had been found but could not confirm further.

The search was made a top priority by the Bydgoszcz police commissioner.

Reports claim James and his Irish friends may have been involved in an altercation with Polish locals in the hours before he disappeared.

Bydgoszcz is halfway between Poznan and Gdansk, where Ireland played their Euro 2012 games.

The Irish group had stopped off there on Saturday night on their way back to Poznan to watch Ireland's game against Italy.

Police divers searched the River Brda, which runs through the city, on Monday and Tuesday and were doing so again on Wednesday morning when the body was found.

More than 100 officers had worked on the case.

Monika Chlebicz, a spokeswoman for the regional police force, told Irish media that around 100 officers were working on the case.

“Everything is under scrutiny,” she said. “But we can't say what happened on the night.”

DeanJackson, what is wrong with you? Were you dropped on your head as a kid? The Irish are liked around the world, you Americans not so much so maybe you should stay where you are and allow the rest of us to experience the rest of the world. This kid fell into a canal which was swollen from days of rain. Show some respect. The mayor of this town is flying the irish flag at half mast and has asked for a minutes silence at a match out of respect, the locals are distraught that one of the 'Best fans in the world' has died and they are writing to every Irish news paper and forum to express their sadness at the loss of James so get over yourself you backward hick.
DeanJackson, never traveling to your identified USSR/East Bloc countries is for you in the US. Poland is one of the European Union countries and not off limits at all for Ireland or the other European Union countries. You in the US can't go there because of your military actions which you still threaten.
Deepest sympathy to the Nolan family at this hard time.
If any of you lot have the cop on to read irish, Polish, german, British news articles etc then you would see that all of Europe has nothing but praise for the irish fans. if you look at the story in the irish independent newspaper website about this poor lad, then youd read the posts from Polish and irish alike who have the greatest of respect for each other. The irish and the Poles get on extrememly well and we have an excellent reputation all over Europe thanks to the behaviour of our people in Poland. James Nolan fell into a canal with steep sides in an area which is quite dark. RIP James. Condolences to the family and thanks to the Polish for all their love and respect.
Shame on people blaming the Polish for this young man's death. He was drinking and alcohol doesn't mix well with good behavior. The young people of Ireland need to learn it is not wise to drink into the wee hours of the morning either at home or abroad. Nothing good ever comes of it.
O this is so sad ,my deepest sympathy to his family ,I'm told that polish gangs are the worst kind here in Chicago ,I had a hard time believing it ,one thing I know for sure they are the most ignorant people I've ever met as a whole.
The matches are secondary to this, thoughts & prayers go out to the Nolan family.
This is terribly sad and disturbing at the same time. My condolences to the Nolan family.
How sad.
