A ticket for a GAA football game which ended in tragedy in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday in 1920 sold for just over $7,000 at an auction recently.

A rare piece of history from the Irish War of Independence, the ticket remained in the pages of a book at a family home in Co. Clare before they brought it to a local auctioneer.

Later that afternoon, British police and soldiers attended a match in Croke Park between Tipperary and Dublin, which was a fundraiser for republican prisoners, where they shot dead 14 people, including Tipperary footballer Michael Hogan.

The auction attracted both Internet and phone bidders with a winning bid of €5,400 ($7,055).

Dara! "... IRA gunmen [didn't] murder 14 British intelligence officers and other members of the Crown Forces", in Dublin in 1920. IRA Volunteers assassinated or executed enemy forces of occupation by democratic mandate in the 1918 elections. An Auxiliary/Black 'n' Tan armoured car drove onto the pitch and machine gunned players and spectators in an act of revenge. Watch the film Michael Collins for an historically correct reenactment.
