Two years ago Natasha McShane, an Armagh student living in Chicago, was brutally beaten within an inch of her life. Now, two years on she remains in a wheelchair unable to walk, talk or look after herself.

Her parents, Liam and Sheila, say that her world, once filled with possibility, is now restricted to their living room, where she sits in a chair by the window.

Liam told the Chicago Tribune, on a good day she might smile but on bad says “she just cries”. His daughter cannot speak, dress herself or go to the bathroom without assistance.

Over the last year McShane has had a series of surgeries and struggles.

Her father said “You think she is going to get better, but it actually gets worse."

Speaking from their home in Silverbridge, County Armagh he said “You think, 'In six months she'll be doing this or be doing that.' But the months pass and there is no progress."

Monday 23rd April will mark the two year anniversary of McShane’s vicious mugging in Bucktown, Chicago. At 3.30am McShane and her friend Stacy Jurich were attacked as they left a bar, celebrating McShane’s acceptance into an intern position.  They were hit from behind with a baseball bat.

On the night of the attack McShane was left bleeding in the street. Luckily, her friend Jurich was able to flag down a cab and get help. McShane was then hospitalized for months and initially doctors were happy with her recovery.

In July 2010 she left Chicago by air ambulance. She had begun to eat, walk and say a few words.

In Belfast she has surgery to replace a section of her skull. This resulted in a serious infection. Then came seizures and then a build-up of fluids on her brain.

She regressed quickly and soon she was unable to walk or speak.

Last summer McShane has a metal plate put in her head and in October doctors discovered her hip was broken. They were unsure whether this had happened since or during the attack. This resulted in another two months in hospital.

Liam said “No speech, no walking, the hip broken, in the hospital and laid up on medication…It's very hard to watch her like that."

Now McShane has just enough strength in her left side to lift a teacup and the only word she can say is “Shin”. No one knows what she’s trying to say.

Her father said “Shin could mean a hundred things.”

They now use flashcards to communicate with their daughter. Sometimes she points to what she wants but they’re not sure if she remembers her old life or understands what has happened to her.

All her family can do is spend time with her. Her sister styles her hair, her aunt paints her nails and her grandmother, Bernadette McShane, provides conversation and company.

She said “There’s not much you can do except spend time with her.”

In September they celebrated her 25th birthday. Her grandmother said “We sang happy birthday, and she enjoyed it. She smiled."

As time trundles on the possibility of recovery seems to slip away but her family still have some hope.

Liam adds without hope “you wouldn't get through it.”

After the attack Heriberto Viramontes (33), a gang member, was arrested. Prosecutors reported that he saw McShane and Jurich as “easy targets”. His friend Marcy Cruz (27), who drove the getaway car, was also arrested.

They face 25 felony charges each including attempted marcher and robbery. There has been no trial date set.

As if the original crime wasn't bad enough, to be kept alive with such a severe, degrading disability makes this crime 10000 times worse!! Were is DR Kevorkian's protégé when you need him!!!
To desecrate a human life like this is disgusting!! If ever there was a time for euthanasia, this is it!!!! Put this poor girl and her family out of their misery now!!!!
I never read the original story, 2 years ago. So I wonder: were these 2 young ladies targeted in a sex attack, or was robbery the intention of the viscious attackers?
I'm sure's there's plenty of other inmates who'd love to give the perpetrators a good beating. I don't suppose the screws can watch them all the time, or would care to.
What a sad story. I have often been out and about in downtown Chicago at night (alone) but never at 3:30am. Bucktown is a bit edgy I think but at that late hour you could be unlucky anywhere. I know how I used to worry about my kids about coming home with drink taken. It's not the same as at home, sadly. The nutters here are more scary. God help her and her family.
I truly empathize with this young lady and her family. However, I would like to inform citizens of Ireland that there are good universities in American cities that are much safer than Chicago. I fear many people in other countries are impressed by certain aspects of a large American city, but they do not realize the danger lurking there. I would urge them to check out the crime rate of a place before they come to the U.S. and have their lives destroyed as this unfortunate young lady did.
Bythebay, We in the Chicago area held several fundraisers for Natasha raising many thousands of dollars for her care. The McShanes chose to return home to NI to continue her care. When she left here, all things pointed to her being on the mend. Our community was outraged by what happened to her. Our prayers continue for her.
Bythebay, I do not know where you are from or where you get your information from about rich Chicagoans and such but I can tell you that Chicago raised almost $200,00 to aid with her medical bills. You cannot assume what type of coverage the other girl had and even if she did, she could still have huge deductibles to pay.
Worked in Chicago in the late early 2000's, one of the most segragated places I have ever seen....This could have been the areas I was exposed to however, my co-workers who were natives stated that it was in fact still segregated. As for NY, I disagree, it is so much safer since Rudy and Bloomberg. As a matter of fact the police have taken to the streets under the above, with random stop and searches by anti-crime units of police, and have been widely criticized by ACLU for doing so. As a result, violent crime has dropped drastically, especially random crime. I work job sites all over the city, including East New York and the South Bronx, alot of hype about how bad it is. As a matter of fact Bill Clinton still maintains an office on 125th street in the Heart of Harlem. Maybe 40 years ago, not now, our city is much, much safer than it has ever been. BTW, scared people make anywhere unsafe, look at George Zimmerman! Tragedy can happen anywhere to anyone, this story is sad.
Maggiepoo, your [obamacare] remark leads me to believe you are a person who has health insurance from an employer or union, and are not a minium wage-earner at Mcdonalds.Such a sad story, that some have to bring a political element to. Most of my life spent in Chicago's Southside Irish neighboorhoods. The poeple of Chicago did raise money, but when the story is off the front page the victom is soon forgotten, but their suffering continues. I still would not be afraid to walk in the area where the attack happened, but then i was a night-shift cabbie for years. No ethnicty was mentioned, but many assumed knowledge. Chicago is not the murder capitol of the US, of course, and a lot more cameras are being installed in the city. Some object to this, having a Big Brother fear, but if they could prevent one attack like this it worth it. Niall how about a trust fund from Irish-Central, that folks could do more than just comment, but contibute?
It's called apathy Bythebay. No one wants to get involved. People are afraid and I can't blame them but we are becoming a nation of cowards. 40 years ago as a young Mother I was crossing the street in the Bronx when a group of black kids surrounded me and wanted a fight. Not one person on the street (it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon) stopped to help me. So, as the attacks were getting worse from these kids we all moved out of our lovely neighborhoods and we all know how those crime riddled places are now. Believe it or not I stood up to those kids and they backed off and decided to run into all the stores wrecking them. You can't walk in that area without a bodyguard today. Sad
Hang on a second people....first off, yes, Chicago has violence but as a resident and lucky to live where I do, it is mostly on the other end of the city..places where even I would not go. This incident involving Natasha happened in an upscale yuppie area so it was really a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as could happen anywhere and to anyone in the world. Secondly, the Irish American community did rally around Natasha by holding benefits...not protests. I drove by a huge banner supporting Natasha hanging by the Kennedy expressway everyday. Irish America could not have done more lest it become an ethnic thing...don't forget the other girl who was injured as well. But true, we have settled into this violence as being the norm.
That poor girl who had everything to live for is attacked by the low life's that roam our cities. Wouldn't it have been great if Irish people came out in Chicago to make as much noise asTrevan got in Florida from the black community? Oh sure call me a racist but the truth is we do not protest enough about crimes committed against white people. When the spanish gang members and black thugs maim or kill white's why isn't that a hate crime? In New York bus drivers are asking to carry tasers to protect themselves from the little darlings who get on the buses, cops have to patrol the schools, detectors in schools to get weapons being carried in. For the past 40 years we allowed these punks to run wild and look now at this lovely girl and weep.
It's sad that this young lady was not able to stay in Chicago and recover in the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where Senator Msrk Kirk, recovering from a stroke and surgery to his brain, underwent similar surgery for implantation of a devise to cover the missing portian of his skull. he is walking a tredmill talking, and has only a problem with movement of his left arm. Of course he has the best medical plan in the country, provided by US government, so his treatment is at the very best facility money can buy. The young lady's current condition doesn't say much for the medical treatment [RE: near fatal infection from surgery performed in Belfast]. The incident is a very dark stain on Chicago's reputation. This miscreant pair should never see the light of day agin, except thru bars. The fact that the Marcy person was a mother of a young child is even worse, as she knew exactly what her dispicable partner was up to. There is a large Irish-American community in Chicago and one hopes they will help Mr. McShane fly to the city with a video of his daughter's current condition, to present as a victom impact statement when this pair come to trial. It has been years since Jennifer Hudson family members were murdered, but the trial will take place soon, the wheels of justice move very slowly in Chicago, but eventually the nefarious pair will get their day in court..and receive their punishment..what ever that may be, it will never be enought.
