A man has appeared in court in Melbourne, charged with the murder of a Dublin backpacker who died after a hammer attack at a boarding house in August.

Luke James Wentholt, 31, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court via videolink to face upgraded charges over the murder of Irish man David Greene, according to TheAge.com.

Wentholt has been remanded in custody since August 26, where he was initially charged with two counts each of intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury for attacking the two Irish men with a hammer in a boarding house in the St Kilda East suburb.

Two backpackers, David Greene, 30, and David Byas, 28, both from Cabinteely in Dublin, were seriously injured in the attack. 

Greene died from his injuries last Friday, while Byas remains in serious condition in the Alfred hospital’s rehabilitation unit.

It is understood that the men were attacked when they intervened after another man made sexual advances towards a woman.

Wentholt, who was in tears during his court appearance, was remanded in custody for a committal mention on December 18th.

Get it right Dara he trashed the apartment with a hammer. He stomped on the heads of the two lads in a blind rage.
It sounds like he was on PCP or some other hallucinogen. He will probably claim temporary insanity - he should be confined for life!
seriously he is crying but not for his victims, I am sure, but rather for his own well being--pfft.
Don't do the crime if ya can't do the time.
