Angry Irish react to abuse Bishop's 'resignation' with demand to jail pedophile priests

Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of disgraced Limerick Bishop Donal Murray.

If the Irish Catholic public had one reaction to the "firing" by Pope Benedict of Bishop Donal Murray on Wednesday, it was "too little, too late." And if there was another resounding response, it was that the disgraced "cover-up cleric" belonged in jail.

Most agreed the embattled Murray had no alternative but to put his own head on the Vatican chopping block after his role in the shocking child sex-abuse scandal was revealed in the Murphy Report into clerical abuse and its cover-up.

The report detailed the extent of child abuse in the Dublin Diocese, and criticized Murray for withholding information and concealing child abuse by members of the clergy.

In particular, the bishop was roundly criticized for shielding pedophile priest Father Thomas Naughton, who was jailed for abusing a boy in the early 1980s — and abusing him for years.

After vowing to consider his position and asking parishioners to pray for him, Murray went to Rome, and on his return, announced that the Pope had accepted his resignation.

Reaction to Murray's resignation from some IrishCentral readers who posted comments on the site's Facebook page was scathing:

"Aiding and abetting is a crime. He should be jailed right along with the other," thundered one reader.

"It's only the tip of the iceberg! The Catholic church in Ireland is one big cesspool of pedophilia," warned another.

Kickstar, we are all very angry at the moment and DEMAND that these monsters are named, tried and jailed. However,, we cannot paint all priests with the same brush. There are some really fabulous priests out there doing remarkable work.

Disgusting from botton to top of leadership! Be a small wonder if all dont walk away from catholic church! Deception one of the hardest life pills to swallow!!!

What is the attraction Why are we so involved with these skirt wearing abusers ?. We in Ireland have a constitution which says in Article 44.2.2 Prohibition of establishment: The state may not endow any religion.And then adds Section 2: The State recognizes the special position of the Holy Catholic Apostolic and Roman Church as the guardian of the Faith professed by the great majority of the citizens Added of course by Eamon DeValera With Archbishop Mc Quaid looking over his shoulder. This church with which we seem addicted too has ruled over Ireland since the inception of the state in 1921 to the determent of all others. But the filth is all coming out now and we see that far from being holy men these men are a bunch of pedo child abusing gangsters who are long overdue a stint behind bars. on a personal note I will never set foot inside a catholic church again needless to say and I have advised my children the same.

You know there is one organization who seem to be glaringly absent in all this up to date and seem happy to be so and that is the so called guardians of the peace namely the Gards. They have just sat back and watched the bishops do all the interviews and the moves and the covering up and all the moves again and to be quite honest with you they come across as absolutely Useless. If one thing has come through in this whole debacle it is That there should be no Clerical involvement in the lives of the children of Ireland get them out. Get the Nuns and priests and brothers miles away from children they have betrayed the sacred trust forever They have nothing to offer. They never had ....only abuse.

One would hope that Pope Benedict XVI and the Irish Bishops would favorably consider opening up priestly ministry to married men, and re-starting the Deaconess ministry as soon as possible.
