More creeping bureaucracy I fear. When will petit- bourgeois nanny states stop insisting on baby sitting grown adults. Does the proposed instrument manufacturer have any political connections with persons in power. I suspect administrators never miss a chance to justify their existence. How about fining liquor traders?

In CT these devices are being used. I personally have a friend who has one and it does not correct the real issues of the disease or mental health. My friend still is in denial. This friend has continued to drink, while they might not be able to drive, it does not cure the person, when the device is taken out this summer, the friend will not have changed because they have not received the help they need. The device can malfunction even if the person has not been drinking and it costs are outrageous to have it put in the car. If someone cant afford the device, it will not help them, they will never be cured. These people need medical treatment and would be better off by court ordered counseling until they have been treated and overcome the addictions how ever long that may take. One last note, Mass Public transportation would help to keep them from driving. This is more of a USA issue unless you live in NYC or Boston.

these are in use in florida and elsewhere, they are a definite deterrent, especially to the long term addict. i have witnessed the ritual up close and personal several times; the onus of manipulation , the real debasement of it all, will make many people never forget their bout with drunk driving. it is rather hilarious to watch the offender go through this, but try not to laugh, try hard, as they are not happy having made such a bad mistake in the first place. the bad mistake is impressed again and again into their psyche, each time they start their car, and it is rather like an electric fence and a dog. PLUS the stupid machines, like all machines, have been known to malfunction too, usually when someone is in a hurry. violence has occured. i think it will be a true improvement, the wet splice. we will then just plug ourselves into our little devices, and be done with all the monkey business.
