I know why us Irish Dancers wear our hair like this. And yes, they did dance like this in the olden days! You see they made their hair look nice (curls was the style) for Sundays because of church. This was the only day they had time to dance. KillanrneyGirl is right about the Olympics. No one comments on them changing locations! Plus, if your not an irish dancer, stay out of it!!!!!

The dancers have to get rid of the phony curls.

I don't know why people let this bother them so much. Certianly there are more pressing world situations to be riled up about other than criticising the hair of an Irish dancer. The curls are charming, and finish off the look of the lovely dresses. Hair straight and flying in your face, getting in your eyes and mouth, now that's a raggy mess!! And why can't the Worlds be held in Glasgow? The Olympics don't stay in the same place, why should the Worlds? If more dancers could see just one Worlds in their lifetime, we just might save this sport from extinction, fill up those emptying dance schools and raise the standard of dancing at the same time.

Like you, queensmarg, I question the outrageous hair styles. Surely the original Irish dancers from eons past did not wear such crazy hair styles. Why don't the girls simply wear their own hair, straight or curley, natural hair, instead of that fake too curley mess.
