More publications are sounding off in what was considered to be a wildly stereotypical portrayal of the Irish with the debut of Damian McGinty as exchange-student Rory Flanagan on ‘Glee.’ Vanity Fair has chimed in noting how the leprechaun connotations were too much.

Brett Berk for Vanity Fair writes that the introduction of Derry-native Damian McGinty, who was the co-champion of ‘The Glee Project,’ allowed for writers on ‘Glee’ to “pound us on the nose with every winkingly ironic stereotype they can conjure.” Included, of course, for Rory are an abundance of green clothes, and rendition of the greenest of them all Kermit the Frog’s “Being Green.” References to U2 and Lucky Charms added to the piling of Irish associations.

Other sources are sounding off as well. Jen Cheney of the Washington Post notes how the concept of McGinty singing  “Being Green” was a little “forced.” She adds, “Would any young Irishman...allow himself to be consistently referred to as a leprechaun?”

It appears to be agreed upon from both Irish and non-Irish viewers of the show that Flanagan’s constant green wardrobe was overkill and unnecessary. At the same rate, stunts of this nature are typical for ‘Glee’ writers. Perhaps next week Rory’s leprechaun connotations will be scaled back? We can only hope.

What do you think? Did the writers go overboard with exchange student Rory Flanagan?

Here is a behind the scenes chat with Damian McGinty on filming at ‘Glee’:

ah for gods sake, would they get a grip, seriously, why in the name thats all holy would ye be insulted. I'm Irish and I dont in the slightest feel insulted or think its over kill, the joke wasnt at the Irish aspect, it was at the sterotypical views in american media and more centrally to the intellect of britney. I think he did a great job, and we here in Ireland are extremely proud of Damian, he has an amazing voice and seems to have fit in perfectly within the cast. The one thing Irish people are known for is our sense of humour and laid back ways, to coin a phrase "just a laugh" or "having the craic", people who find issue with this, need to relax. If you want to take offence, start with all the TV programs and films that protray Irish as drunks,Priests or associated with the IRA. In fact if you payed attention, rather than knocking the Irish, it protrayed Rory as a quick thinking normal teenager, who is at best a bit innocent with regards to the american school ways. Thats normal, so people chil-ax and stop looking for something to take offence at, just enjoy the program.
I'm an Amer citizen, but parents born & raised in Dublin, Ireland. Came to US when I was about 5. Think Glee handled Damien perfectly; played to all sterotypes of the Irish (well, except the drinking), but I saw it as laughing at how Americans & others incorrectly perceive the Irish. So, it was Americans having chance to laugh at themselves b/c of their "stereotypical thinking" of the Irish. Don't think it did any injustice to the Irish at all. (BTW, I do think Damien (?), the actor, is not a good actor. His accent gets him thru--makes him worth watching---but he desperately needs acting lessons. Glee does him a disservice by not working w/him on that. (P.S. I am American citizen, but I love being Irish. VERY aware if someone making fun of the Irish. If they are, I figure they are clueless about us.
Really? I mean, come on. The Irish enjoy a good laugh and they probably enjoy teasing their own. If they can tolerate it, then everyone else should. I know exactly where I get my sense of humor from, and it isn't the American side, thank God!
Once again, it's,"It's a comedy show! What do you expect?" I expect the Irish, Catholic and non-Catholic, to be treated with as much dignity and respect that is shown to the Afro-Americans, the people of Jewish extraction, the Muslims, the gays and the lesbians. No more monkeys dressed in green. No more Irish drunkards. No more dumb Irishman or women, no more Irishmen and women in awe because a priest says something and they are infalliable (They're not!) No more Irishmen lusting after woman becasue she is wearing a skirt. No more belittling the Irish for any reason except for the character's own individual's flaws. We are a proud and intelligent race. We must keep it that way or else become the schickt of every fool's depraved sense of humour. Up Ireland and up the Irish! We have earned that much through our ancestors. Let us use well and to the good and welfare of our race!
Well, it goes back to the old P.T. Barnum saying; "I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right!" No such thing as bad P.R.
Damian was Great. I wasn't crazy about hte song Bein Green but really liked it. Take Care Of Yourself waas wonderful. The show was ok sense it is suppose to be a comedy. Kinda of silly if you ask me. But as long as Damian is on I'll watch.
Jeez! What's all the fuss about? It was a little over the top but that's Glee. I think Damian did a wonderful job with what was given to him and the song "Take Care of Yourself" floored me. He has grown so much since CT. I hope he continues to succeed and stays grounded. I see a great future for him.
We're Irish for God's sake.. Lighten up!.. the shows a comedy and it's his first episode, give them a break!
We're Irish for God's sake... lighten up! They are all characters in a comedy!! It's not a world crisis. Give him and Glee a break!!
As a fan of The Glee Project, I began watching Glee for the first time this season just to see Damian. The leprechaun story may be over the top, but I was still entertained plus Damian sounded great! Let's face it, Glee is absurd and escapist fun, pure and simple.
You know, it's a show, for pete's sake. Damian's story line involved Brittany who, if you've ever watched the show, isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I think her believing he was a leprechaun was perfect. That was only for Damian's first episode anyway. She found out in the end that leprechauns don't really exist. I say it was all in good fun & people need to have a sense of humor about it. It's not the end of the world.
