DOC NYC, the premier documentary festival in New York City, is offering two great films, one by an Irish director and another about Ethel Kennedy.

In the aftermath of the hurricane Sandy organizers are trying to ensure a good turnout for these films, since the filmmakers will likely be in attendance. Below are brief summaries of the films.

Men at Lunch   7:30 pm, Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, School of Visual Arts Theatre & 3:15 pm, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, IFC Center

Director Seán Ó Cualáín, an accomplished documentary director for both TG4 and RTÉ in Ireland, comes to DOC NYC for the US premiere of his newest work, Men at Lunch. The film tells the story of the iconic 1932 photo of workmen sitting on a girder at the 69th floor of Rockefeller Center, calmly having their lunch. He uses the photo to explore the larger story of the immigrant (and often Irish) workers who built New York.

Ethel  6:45 pm, Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, School of Visual Arts Theatre

The Kennedys are probably the most famous Irish American family in recent American history and their legacy continues to fascinate generations of Americans. This documentary explores the amazing life of Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy, through her personal relationships and devotion to her family. In addition, Rory Kennedy, who directed the film - is expected to attend.

this photo of men sitting on a steel girder high above the NY(?) skyline has always atunned me, maybe because I have a fair case of panic about such situations... But here's an admission of my thoughts this time: maybe this is a fake, a doctored photo! Very hard to really believe these guys really ate their sammies in such a risky spot. And with all the photo doctoring nowadays, ya gotta think... Plus there was that photo recently in IC of DeValera in 1916 rebellion, with feet-only of woman compatriot next to him because her body had been "brushed out"... that was decades prior to the men at lunch image; hmm???
I hope I get to see these films.
