Maureen O'Hara celebrating her 90th birthday

Irish screen legend Maureen O’Hara celebrated her 90th birthday in style yesterday in Co. Cork amidst family and friends.

Dressed in a black  suit and red scarf, Maureen looked as glamorous as ever with pearl earrings, red lipstick and a dazzling smile. Speaking at the celebrations she said “I have been acting since I took my first steps”.

“I came from a talented acting family. We grew in that environment and we used to put on plays in the back garden and for our parents. By seven, I was already receiving acting instructions.”

The starlet was born Maureen FitzSimons on the August 17, 1920 in Ranelagh Dublin. Taking advice from her acting peers she later changed her name to a more marketable Maureen O’Hara.

With over 60 films under her belt, O’Hara was most famously known for her work alongside John Wayne. One of the pair’s most well known films- “The Quiet Man” was shot in Cong in County Mayo in 1952.

After becoming a Hollywood starlet Maureen was granted American citizenship on January 25, 1946. However she was able to remain an Irish citizen also, this was the first time in history the United States government granted an Irish citizen dual citizenship.

Her memoir “Tis Herself” was published in 2004.

What a terrific lady........happy birthday! And perhaps it was "emblazoned"?
I have loved Maureen O'Hara since I was a child. I've loved watching her sparkle while starring with John Wayne...her fire and spirit was an inspiration back when women normally took second place to what "their men" thought. Her roles were the appitame of the independent woman. Happy Birthday to a wonderful lady.
One of my favorites...
gotta laugh at boffo typo - bet Miss O'Hara would - guess embroidered or beaded or impressive suit would be more like it - Happy 90th to my favorite actress
This is a true Lady who has shared her life with the world and has given so many women courage when life seemed to whip them. I have been privileged to follow her career from "Hunchback" to "Christmas Box" and each film was better than the one before. Even better, this Lady has shown the world that when life's troubles come that Christian morals prevail. She has shown the world this since her first marriage until today. Thank you for a shining example. Even now you are 90 and I am 70. God Bless You and continue to keep you.
I sent Miss O'Hara a fan letter when I was a boy and received back a small autographed photo. I wish I had that photo today. I was in love with her then...and I still am. I wish her a happy, healthy and wonderful birthday.
Such a beautiful lady still!God bless you Ms.O'Hara.You could teach today's star's a thing or two about acting, having class and staying humble. You are a true "STAR"!A fan from Florida<3
I was delighted to see how lovely Ms. O'Hara looks! I want to send her a rock from the Abbey in Cong from a visit last year with my brother Ronald. Ronald lives in Dromore and we took the trip to see where our favorite Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne movie was filmed. We had our picture taken in the abbey and the photographer asked Ronald what his name was and he said "Duke" .... it got a laught or two! Ronald and I want to wish Ms. O'Hara a blessed 90th birthday and here's to 90 more! Pamela Patton

Still striking, even at ninety. Happy Birthday Maureen!
The movie, "The Quiet Man," was filmed, according to Ms.O'Hara, spent six weeks shooting the exteriors in Ireland and filmed the interiors on sound stages in L.A. The movie, though made in 1951, was Republic's first production to be shot outside the United States, and it was released in 1952. Maureen and the Duke are/were the best!
I met her in Glengarriff at her 82 birthday at the Golf club and have the picture to prove it. She is beautiful at any age. Happy Birthday, Maureen
