‘Kill the Irishman’ movie features Cleveland mob wars - SEE VIDEO

The true tale of Irish Cleveland mobster Danny Greene

The trailer for the movie, “Kill the Irishman”, written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, has been released. The movie tells the true story of Danny Greene, an Irish thug working for mobsters in Cleveland.

The movie is based on a book, by Rick Porello, by the same name. It tells the story of Greene (Ray Stevenson) who has established himself as a gallant rogue with the American media as he takes on the Cleveland mafia. In Porello’s book he reported that Greene managed to avoid eight assassination attempts, sent by mafia boss James Licalvoli.

Greene was famously fixated on the color green. Apparently he had a green car, a green office and handed out green pens. In fact he called himself the Celtic warrior and gave himself the codename “Mr Patrick”. It will be interesting to see how the Irish audience takes to such a character.

The movie will be release on March 11, 2011. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

The cast of the movie is quite a line up of Hollywood stars including Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio and Fionnula O’Flanagan.

The story of Greene’s life should be an interesting one which looks as if it is well told, from the trailer (see right). However, Hensleigh will have to make sure that he doesn’t push the shamrock too much.

The book is good and the Cleveland Mob War is definitely quite different than those in New York, Chicago or Boston. If the movie is done right then viewers shouldn't be disappointed.
The Irish have always been in the mob in America. My father told me the difference between the Irish mob and the Mafia is the the Mafia kill you for crossing them, the Irish mob kill you for thinking about crossing them. The Irish likes to work hand and hand with the government. An Irishmen was running a gambling boat in Pittsburgh. Some Mafia want to cut in on the operation. The Irishmen reported them to the police, and the police handled the situation. I learned this from a book about Art Rooney Sr. by his son. The book is called Rohdan gallic for Rooney. Art Rooney was a great guy, and was a friend of my great grandmother.
They finally did get Greene in the end...but the investigation into his death ultimately destroyed the Cleveland mob. They were right to be intimidated by the Irishman!
To some he was a modern day Robin Hood. To others just a hood. But it is a true story about a man with more muscle than brains. If he had any sense at all he could have owned Cleveland. Great Book I hope the movie is close to it!
